A Well Known Dog Trainer Says:
WreckitWhippet replied to ~Shepherd~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
Most of mine couldn't care less if it's a pat, stroke or a slap under the chops. They come back for more with the tails wagging and there's no hand shy dog in this house. I did manage to insult Ronin with one of my slaps, when I walked out and gave him one in the usual style. I forgot he wasn't one of mine ETA: strange dogs, timid dogs etc. No way -
I think the talking and being able to switch them on and off , heightens the bond between the owner and the dog. It's something that is a bit of fun and they take great delight in having a chat. I love the talking but I won't tolerate squealing at me or barking for no reason. They are not allowed to call to me at shows and disrupt others either.
-
All of mine speak to me. My first Stafford was a broken one, he didn't talk, hated water and toys. I can get Sway going in a couple of seconds, she's the best at it here. Pinky likes to back chat and Brett will talk when he's got toys in his mouth and he's showing off.
-
Wait for him to talk to you and encourage it with words like " Speak to me " "talk to me" and praise him when he does. Once he's really chatting away tell him he's a good boy and then ask him to " be quiet" or "stop", reward him for stopping. They love nothing more than a chat and teaching them to speak on your terms is easy, if you have a natural talker.

You'll also need to check with the Canine Council, if he was born and bred in NZ, he may need to be re-registered.
-
Is he a main registered dog in your name and are you a member of the Canine Council in your state ? If so you and you believe he is a dog with excellent conformation and a temperament that can contribute to the breed, you can advertise him at stud on the breed pages. If not, then there's little call for unregistered dogs and I for one do not condone back yard breeding.

Mine is done and in the mail today. The next Board meeting is not until the second Wednesday of March.

I used to get sloppy puppy poo on commerical diets. I now start them on a diet of mainly raw, they are well formed poo , basically the day they start on it.

She wasn't there to "illustrate purpose for breeding", she was there to present a model for better practices in commercial dog breeding. The main thrust of the entire day was, afterall, about dog welfare. Then perhaps they shouldn't have chosen a puppyfarmer if they wanted to promote dog welfare. It hardly makes for credibility. -
If it's going to pass, then I don't see what the issue is, you go and put it over the pits, get it certified as road worthy and then go and register it. There is no way around it, as you will need a set of NSW plates to go on it. Our dog trailer has to be inspected every year and given that it has the most precious cargo of all in it, then it's probably a good thing.

Some of those old books are very good. They take you back to the basics. I read and read when it comes to whelping but during those crappy long nights before the bitch whelps, I always go back and read my Eleanor Frankling book.

What Do You Do While On Whelp Watch?
WreckitWhippet replied to Missymoo's topic in Breeders Community
I lay on the lounge and try to sleep. I put some newpaper in and my girls are always noisy and pretty frantic nesters, so that wakes me up if there's any action. I watch a lot of pay TV waiting for babies and in the first couple of weeks after they are born ETA we invested in the couch of all couches and it is comfortable enough to sleep on for a couple of weeks. -
Is it not road worthy ?

Tho Kate's proposed code of ethics for commercial dog breeders (and making pet shops responsible for lifelong commitment) would mean the end of puppy farmers and pet shops sourcing pups at 6 weeks age. No, I know this cos I started a fun thread called (Dark Secrets of the Breed" - you can search for it if you like. Point is the vast majority of breeder and breed association websites DO gloss over aspects of breeds. Why frown at a 1st crosser for doing the same? It's time to grow up, enter the realities of the real world and be an adult. Change what you can for the betterment of dogs whatever way you can. Be a grown up and think of the dogs. I don't appreciate the "hyena" comments, just because I like many others are passionate about our pedigree dogs. Blind freddy can see what's going on and it's under the guise of "for the betterment of dogs". To have it suggested that the pedigree dog breeders should find some common ground and work with the puppy farmers and those who breed purely to line their wallets is an insult. -

I don't take notice of puppyfarmers, no. I'm surprised you would. Yes, we can. If "us" is ethical registered dog breeders and people who make some effort to learn about a breed before buying and "them" is the breed for profit brigade and irresponsible dog buyers then I'm in favour of division. Kate uses yellow Lab and Golden Retriever bitches and an apricot toy poodle dog. She AI's the bitches. That sums it up for me too. The pedigree world can survive without the cross breeders, they can bring nothing to the table in terms of animals that are usefull to us. On the flip side, they need us to supply them with the purebred parents to produce their F1's and back crosses, which line their wallets. Talk, share information and knowledge for the good of "dogs". Absolutley I agree with that, there's so much more that can and should be done, especially when it comes to research into disease and improving the life of every dog. But I do not find puppy farms acceptable and I will never aid through the use of my pedigree dogs, cross breeding. -

To be honest, I couldn't see many people going along with this one! She likened it to production animals, where some people are "stud breeders" and breed the purebred breeding stock whilst those involved in production purchase the breeding stock (you would think, for a premium) and breed F1 "pets". I found her talk quite hard to follow at times without a powerpoint presentation. The thing is they are dogs not stud cattle. We as registered breeders are supposed to take type, temperament , structure and soundness (which includes health ) seriously. We are aiming to produce the best that we can. If a puppy meets our expectations upon maturity and we think it worthy of breeding from, then why would we waste it, by seling it to someone who is going to cross breed and it's forever lost to our breed. If the idea is to breed " better dogs", then how can the cross breeders hope to achieve that, if they are using the second rate left overs, that the registered breeders wouldn't touch with a barge pole ? But it guess that doesn't matter, as all they are looking it is both parents are "nice" dogs. ETA: the day the CC's rule that our pedigree dogs can be used at stud with unregistered or dogs or used for the purposes of cross breeding, is the day that I walk away. -

Why would any ANKC breeder want to sell their puppies to someone who is going to cross breed them ? To me, if you knowingly do that, it is every bit as bad as doing it yourself. You put in countless hours, dollars and dedicate your life to producing pedigree pups that are typey, have great temperaments and are sound, why would you go to all that effort, to then have the quality animals contribute nothing to the gene pool
