Of All The Cheaper Dry Dogfoods Which Is The Best?
WreckitWhippet replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Of the supermarket and non premium foods from the rural supplies/pet food warehouses, Optimum would be the best. -
Congrats and it seems like only yesterday he was a little guy

Advice Please/have You Ever Experienced This?
WreckitWhippet replied to jazzygirl's topic in Breeders Community
If my bitches have an otherwise healthy litter that are doing well, I believe they do know best and that there is something not right with the pup. -
It was a general warning that when you buy plaited leather ( and this goes for any show lead, check chain or collar that you put on your dog ) to make sure whoever made it, knows what they are doing and makes it properly. I've had a plaited roo leather lead come undone and it left me in a rather pre carious position in the show ring.

no train, no shed , no bark... it must be one from the toy department at Kmart

Feed her chicken wings.

Some numpty ( that was me ) couldn't measure correctly. I've got a gorgeous Luscious too, mine is tied to the end of a Stafford and still looks and feels like the day I got it and it's survived the dog doing a high dive off the table and it didn't stretch or break. If you are buying plaited leather, you need to be sure that the person doing the plaiting knows what they are doing, as I've had some come apart in the past.

I simply disown family these days , if they want to buy from a pet shop, BYBer or anyone but a registered breeder or rescue.

Of course buyers are allowed to ask about the health of a puppy or question a breeder, if it appears unwell, inactive or different compared to the litter mates. You also have every right to ask about and see proof of parents testing and any relevant testing the pups may have had before the leave home. No ethical breeder would back away from a sale because a puppy buyer is asking questions about health testing or the condition of a puppy they are looking to purchase. The answer to question 4 would be no and the breeder is basically looking for excuses. If a pup has discharge of any kind from the eyes or ears, it would indicate the pup is unwell , injured or possibly suffering from a hereditary condition. Blue ribbon means that the breeder just pays to advertise and use the services provided by DOL, it is nothing to do with the breeders ethics. If you are looking for an ethical breeder, start with the breed clubs, MDBA and word of mouth. Run a mile from this one and think yourself lucky they are backing out of the sale.

Raising A Litter Of Puppies During Winter
WreckitWhippet replied to Baileys mum's topic in Breeders Community
I have a large garden shed with one side removed and meshed so they can go outside and sit in the sun. It has a kennel in there with warm blanket so they can curl up together and stay warm if they need to. That's from about 4-6 weeks. After six weeks they are then free to explore their puppy yard all day every day and they can retreat to the shed and kennel if they need to. -
Nothing like giving someone a helping hand when they are obviously crying out for help.

I was wondering if anyone would remember those days, it took forever to get your rego papers and applying for a prefix was a lovely 6 month wait.

**urgent** Old Dog Needs A Home Asap
WreckitWhippet replied to kirst_goldens's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't think it's professional either and for TAFE students to suggest that the owner surrender the dog or take it to a shelter is just as bad. -
Depends on the breed but it is very common.

Yep.. you're so right there! Can someone tell me why a bitch can compete in the showring when its in season? I would have thought this was unfair to fellow competers? Because bitches shouldn't be penalised for being bitches and coming into season. You can train and correct your males to ignore bitches in season , to a certain degree for the show ring. Mine don't really give a stuff about the girls being in season. The ring is supposed to be about conformation and it's a couple of minutes at a time. Running a triangle and out and back and stacking for 30 odd seconds , doesn't really compare to what you do in the obedience ring, in terms of exercises and time. It's not fair for dogs competing in other dog sports and obedience to have the added distraction, the playing field would not be even if a bitch in season was competing.

It's not like you are going to feed her the whole cake. Sess had some banana cake and custard for her Birthday yesterday and I can't remember the last time she ate something that wasn't dog food. Once a year won;t kill them, unless you are a very bad cook LOL

The breeder in me, says desex, desex, desex as I never want to see any of mine end up BYB, puppy farm dogs or the like and therefore the earlier they are desexed and before the first season, means there's no chance of that happening. There is no difference between desexing a pup at 8 weeks and a pup at 6 months, neither are mature in terms of structure, so there fore if you are going to desex before maturity, it matters little when it's done. Then there's the flip side for me, where I want to see every pedigree dog reach it's full potential in terms of development and maturity. Poodlefan has already pointed out the serious sports competitors feelings on the subject and how they ( and those who have studied early desexing ) feel the dogs beneift from delaying neutering/speying. I feel the benefits are not just limited to the performance dogs and certainly the average pet would too be better off desexed upon maturity. Just from the preliminary observations of the MDBA study, it looks like there may be some areas that some serious study could be undertaken regarding desexing and links to HD. My head tells me the longer you can delay the desexing of a dog or bitch the better. There is the risk of pyometra in bitches but one would hope they can make it through one or two seasons without this occuring. My head and heart tell me that I and others should be looking out for and protecting the future of any pups we produce , by making sure they are desexed. To sum it up, in a home where the owner can responsibly manage an entire animal and is comfortable doing so, they should be left entire, where that's not the case, it's probably best all round that the do desex ASAP. Where gianst and large breeds are concerned, they should be directed by their breeder.

I just make a banana or a carrot cake and make cream cheese icing for the top. It's cream cheese, lemon juice and some icing sugar.

If they are NSW papers, it is up to the new owner to transfer. Although I wish this wasn;t the case, as I still own quite a few limit registered dogs, according to dogs NSW

4 Year Old Staffy - Possible Cataracts :(

I thought I needed a referral from the vet to see an opthamologist? Can I just make an appointment without the vet sending me there? We can book straight in to our eye specialist in NSW -
Yep and we know the kind of breeders they are... the one's who whack everything on the main register , regarldess of them not being of show potential. Not really the kind of breeder I aspire to be like.

yeah right
