  1. Absolutely in terms of type and temperament. The Amstaff shouldn't be fat or built like a tank nor should it be huge. 17-19 inches is what the standard calls for and yes, they are musular but they should also be agile and graceful. I hope this link works, it's for the breed standard extension and helps to explain a lot about the breed and what it should be http://www.ankc.org.au/_uploads/docs/23455...Terrier_BSE.pdf
  2. Never mind actually "biting", in NSW a dog can be declared dangerous for "rushing".
  3. I think your Aunt is very lucky not to have the ranger on her doorstep and be dealing with a dangerous dog declaration. If she feels she's in the right , she has every right to refuse to pay for the injuries to the ACD. Your Aunt had want to be very sure that her dog did not injure the ACD and be prepared to lawyer up to defend her dog. It's going to cost her a whole lot more to prove it, than $850. ETA: if your Aunt lives in NSW and her dog was offlead, then she's going to be up poo creek without a paddle
  4. Poor nerve or weak nerves, which is what I believe was meant, is inherent in the dog, . If I was breeding b oxers with poor or weak nerve, I would desist, or change lines. Weak nerved dogs are often dangeerous, and fear biters. If you want more understanding, check out the BSL forum, there is a thread there on weak nerves Absolutely. Where an SBT or Boxer with a correct temperament would stand it's ground, observe the situation or not see itself as being under any threat, the weak nerved gutless dogs often run and even worse, lash out in fear. They do not display the tolerances, that would be expected from either breed and to be honest they are bloody dangerous. I guess that everyone is entitled to their opinion, provding it's the "right" one according to DOL rescue
  5. Look interstate. NSW isn't that far to travel. It's important to choose your breeders carefully, you have to live with that dog for the rest of it's life, so make sure it comes from health tested parents ( hip scored, ataxia clear and eye cert's ), the breeders know and understand the breed standard and breed dogs accordingly. Temperaments and health are very important. A quality puppy is worth the wait.
  6. Run a mile.... There are plenty of ethical breeders to choose from. Breeders who love their dogs and do the best by the breed, not some jacked up , steroid ridden animals , making up for a lack of man bits.
  7. Let them know that the behaviour intimidates your dog and that the running the fence in such as way, has the potential ( eventually it will happen ) for their own dogs to turn on each other. Block the gaps where you can and try a thick plasic, shade cloth or brush screening.
  8. Go around and tell the owners what's happening and ask for permission to turn the hose on them.
  9. I only look after friends dogs , dogs that I've bred or have a close association with their breeder. I'm very particular about the dogs that come here, as they live in the house and run with my pack. I certainly wouldn't be opening up my home to any old dog
  10. I do. I only have a couple of weeks off between long term boarders and sometimes they even overlap. I take on the dogs that owners do not want to place in a typical boarding kennel, for various reasons. Boarders have been here anywhere from a couple of weeks to 6 months. What I charge depends on the dog and what the owners wants. If the dogs are just living in the house and are exercised with the others I charge less. It costs more where I'm expected to do additional things like training ( outside of keeping up a normal routine ) chiro visits, etc. I'm porbably about half the rate of a standard boarding kennel. I've got one now, one coming in a weeks time for a couple of weeks and two in August for 5 or 6 weeks.
  11. PMSL the other week when another exhibitor said to me " I'll have whatever is in that bottle, that's making that dog so shiny " It was water
  12. Are these the ones who act as police with the same rights as the RSPCA? They have Inspectors in NSW and are authorised under POCTA
  13. Send the right entry and or the right chq , to the right show sec .... otherwise you have two cranky sec's calling you going
  14. Sorry for your loss. What an awesome little dog and a wonderful character Doug was
  15. I set out to capture a head shot of my young dog. I wanted to show his head to it's full potential and I'm pleased, I think I've done just that. Here's a failed family portrait
  16. It would make you think twice about being voted onto any committee. I can tell you now I wouldn;t bother becoming a committee member of any club, if I couldn't exhibit. For those that say it's a big NO for the committee members to exhibit. Have a think about the clubs in our local area, where the committee members of our bigger clubs , are also wearing the same ( sometimes different ) hat for another. There are plenty that I can think of where the Treasurer and the Secretary fillfull the same roles for a couple of other shows. One person that I can think of in particular is on the committee of at least 3 local shows, within 35 minutes of their home. Saying no to them , would be a slap in the face , in return for all of the hard work they put it.
  17. The likes of me can remember dogs such as Clifford. Weak nerves in either the SBT or the Boxer is an accident waiting to happen. Being "boisterous" is easily fixed. Weak nerves, timidity and undersocialised, should not be recycled back into the community.
  18. Rubbish! :D Just like any dog....with training, which she will be given, and time, she can learn. She is obviously a still young and poorly socialised Staffy X Boxer....with both breeds being quite boisterous. That does not mean she does not have the ability to learn how to be a well behaved and sociable dog. A poorly socialised SBT or cross is an accident waiting to happen, the same can be said for a Boxer. They are both supposed to be confident breeds, that stand their ground. Timid and lacking confidence they are ticking bombs. The RSPCA has reached an all time low.
  19. Adults no more than 24 hours, as they have to bed fed and exercised. I don't leave my adults any longer than about 8 or 9 hours during the day. For an 8 week old, it would depend on the situation. I know and understand that people work and owners are frequently gone for 8-10 hours at a time. Whilst it's not ideal, I don't think any pup has died from being fed just before the owner leaves and as soon as they get home. There's no hard and fast rules but as an owner you need to take into account things like feeding, the weather, age , potential for noise and destruction, pack dynamics, illness and injury.
  20. It's fine with me. We already strruggle in the country areas to get enough people willing to be on committees, why should they miss out on what is normally their home show. Many don't handle themselves as they are too busy on the day, but they enter the dogs and find a handler. I have no issues with that.
  21. I'm not in Sydney and my house is full and crazy but I could do it.
  22. I know I shouldn't laugh but I have a Whippet that insists on rolling in her fish. She does eventually eat it, but she has a routine for preparing it first No helpful advice, as you've tried cutting it up
  23. I teach my noisy one's to "speak". I've found it works well to teach them to bark on command and also to be quiet when told. Ignoring the dog does work but it's a real test of your patience and sometimes your endurance.
  24. Dogs are carnivores not nylovores Owners should be made aware of the dangers of nylon bones. This includes the ends being ground down and becoming sharp. There is the potential for a dog to stab themselves in the back of the throat ( I've had this happen with a Frenchie ). They can be swallowed long ways, with no chance of them being digested. Swallow a nylon bone and there will be surgery to remove it. Feeding your dog raw meat off the bone, is the best option for teeth cleaning and nutrition.
