Rehoming High Drive Stafford
WreckitWhippet replied to Mavriksbt's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I asked the question as to what circumstances the dog has killed in. I think it's relevant and important as you are considering rehoming him. I think we can pretty much assume how life ended for the cat at it wasn't nice. I've got a high drive bitch that would kill a cat in an instant, so believe me I understand where you are coming from and what you are dealing with. I can't see how if you cannot manage him, that you think someone without the breed experience and the knowledge to manage a dog like that will cope. Providing him with a cat free home, will only limit his ability to kill, by taking away the opportunities. The drive will still be there and I have concerns for any new owner, it only takes an open front door, the kids to make a mistake or a cat to go by in a public place and catch them unawares. I don't think it's fair to place such responsibilites on any new family. They would need to be very aware of what's going on around them at all times and vigilant to the point of being paranoid when looking out for other animals. He may be fine in a one on one home, with no cats and a new owner who is willing to spend the time with a behaviourist, which I don't see as overkill, but the responsible thing to do. If he were mine, I'd be keeping him in his own run/kennel, with a roof on it and making sure that all cats were locked in cattery or enclosure when he's out being exercised. You can still provide him with the exercise and stimulation that he needs. He will have his regular outings to obedience and agility. I personally could not pass that responsibilty onto someone else and would never forgive myself if he harmed another animal after rehoming. If you feel you cannot meet his needs, then considering euthanising him, rather than passing the problem onto someone else. -
L2-HGA and HC are the two that can be DNA tested in Staffords.

and if the bitch comes back as a carrier or effected what then ? surely the stud owner would have asked about the status of the bitch prior to mating ? if both her parents were clear and you had the paper work for them, you could have waited until the pups had their first vacc and chip and had the bitch done at the same time. There's only a 15 day turn around on the results .

Why do you need to keep her at home???????? Exercise her, she needs to be fit to have an easy labour, but don't take her to places dogs frequent - dog parks and beaches, vet clinics and the like. She will need to maintain her fitness for the birth - there are a lot of physical stresses that a bitch will go through as part of pregnancy and delivery, and fitness levels are important in how well these are handled. I wouldn't do any rigourous exercise - just regular and gentle, and keep an eye on her - if it appears that she is uncomfortable then leave it at that. As she gets bigger you will see her probably tone down her activity anyway. my staffords go as flat out for as long as they want, there's no point in trying to slow them down, you just let them do as they please and if you're lucky they might take it easy in the last week. There's nothing wrong with rigourous exercise, the only concern would be them doing it in the heat of the day, other than that, they can run, swim and play as much as they like.

the "mass" or whatever isn't at her belly button.. it's a little lower but not the groin area. does that make sense? yep

The more I think about it, the more appealing the idea of dicking the pollies becomes LOL
-
are you sure she's in whelp ? and it's not a closed pyo ETA: some might think it's an over reaction but if I find anything that I don;t consider to be normal in a bitch, it's off to the vets that instant.

:p :p :D :D I had a feeling I'd made a typo and just popped back in to correct it... too late :p I am going to leave it and let you enjoy your laugh, as you have quoted it

inguinal hernias act exactly as you have described. Inguinal hernias often show themselves during whelp and are more often found in entire bitches
-
my first thought is an inguinal hernia

Yup - reminise of the Tail docking issue. Lets not even go there - how are those braccy breeds fairing now ??? And they are slapping you with C-Sections as well. Well we may have to have fugly tails on our dogs but at least we won't have to change their entire head structure and we will be able to whelp them - albiet not when or how its suits us . For Dogs sake we have to stop this. Never fear, I am all for dicking, cropping and removing their dew claws. :p

That is perhaps the most common but scariest responses. When they come to restrict something that impacts on you, don't expect anyone to be left to stand with you. Thankyou for proving my point. In other threads that call for restrictions of numbers, number of litters, age of bitches, how long a bitch has off from the show ring when in whelp etc, others have said that it won't impact on them because they do it such and such a way, therefore they don't have an issue with it. I just chucked the response in this thread, to see how others would react, when it's something that touches a bit closer to home... food for thought

I wouldn't feed him at night, only in the morning, he'll burn the calories during the day

Ruger bred the pup herself.

As long as they are PIAA accredited, breeders can sell to pet shops and wholesalers. Code of Ethics for dogsnsw A Member shall not: (a) sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers or retail pet dealers, who are not accredited by the Pet Industry Association of Australia Limited (PIAA). I dont know what their process is if a breeder is caught selling to non PIAA members I'll take a stab in the dark razzle. You get busted doing it and the CC either ignores the complaint or you can simply make the complaint go away by threatening legal action.

Rehoming High Drive Stafford
WreckitWhippet replied to Mavriksbt's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
agreed and without that , the dog is just a ticking bomb. One cock up or misjudgement of a situation by the new owner, could see the dog kill again. Staffords that kill cats and chooks are not rare, neither are incidents that involve one turning on another or pack attacks when they get excited. -
You assume that every breeder will want to use an "import" and that's not the case, not every breeder is blinded by the words " imported xxx " on the paperwork and many tread with caution, assess the whole dog and never go there.

No way on earth I'd leave a baby puppy or even a bigger puppy alone with an older dog that has a treat ball or any food left down. Pups also need to be fed seperate from adults and under supervision, so you can ensure that your puppy is eating and the food is not being consumed by the other dogs. Puppies can become ill in an instant and you need to know exaclty what it's eaten and when. A pup going off it's food can be an indicator that something is not quite right.

I have a lovely best in group, class in show winning bitch. Beautiful example of the breed, who upchucks at any opportunity in the car . Pedigree makes no difference to her

I reckon it would number in the thousands Jed. I've not seen the figures printed for that certain person in the last three months journals. Actually I think it's been a while since the CC's did. I wonder if that had anything to do with the uproar on here and on Ozshow about what was going on. Naturally if you stop printing the figures, the mass exports cease to happen.

any discharge especially for first timers should be swabbed and viewed for puss cells. If something crops up under the microscope, then a sample should be sent off the pathology, to determine exaclty what you are dealing with. Things like strep g, can manifest at any stage and if present in the birth canal during whelping, it will cause puppies to fade and die. Bitches can have a jelly like discharge from time to time when in whelp. I've seen others have a thinner , whiter looking discharge that has turned out to be normal and one that was not really coloured at all, that one ended up being the strep G infection. Microchipping and routine vet care, should be taken care of well before matings are planned. The vets is the last place I'd want to take an apparently healthy bitch.

Now see if find that new proposal far more palatable then restricting the number of litters a bitch can whelp. My bitches free whelp and come from long lines of free whelpers. Perhaps they should reduce it to one c-section and the bitch is out. It wouldn't impact on me.

Rehoming High Drive Stafford
WreckitWhippet replied to Mavriksbt's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It's great that he comes with character references but that doens't answer the question of what he does/has done and under what circumstances. -
I don't think the wallies breeding blue , would even know what it means... It means different things to different breeders but who are they kidding if the production of thousands of blue Stafford pups is going to contribute anything to the breed. The majority are breeding blue to blue and when they aren't or there is a decent dog or bitch in there somewhere, they are just robbing the gene pool.
