That is a sad state of events RSG. I know that I would much much prefer to buy a pup that was raised as part of the family and NOT in kennels !!!!! Give the RSPCA the powers to police the planning laws and that's what they want. They can shut down every one of the registered breeders, who has their dogs living as we do. We're sitting ducks and easy targets, we're the one's who chip and register our dogs, are members of state bodies, register all progeny and can be tracked down in an instant via CAR or the CC's database. Meanwhile life goes on for the back yard breeders and the puppy farmers.

What do you mean PE?? DOLers are again pointing out the flaws in the RSPCA's work. Some would rather we didnt do that. Souff Souff; you don't need to answer posts for me on my behalf, anyone would tihnk you like seeing your sig. I meant that as soon as The Ark posted something good, she got shut down. I'm entitled to my opinion and I'm looking at the big picture. If only it was as straight forward as shutting down the puppy farmers, but it's not.

Jo, you have forgotten about the registered breeder who can afford the acres and the kennels, which we could make happen if we needed to but would walk away because raising pups in kennels away from the house, is not how we would choose to do so. We do not feel it's the best way to bring up a puppy and meet its early and ongoing needs. I take great pride in raising the pups in the home and sending out happy well adjusted babies, that leave home and tackle the world without a second thought. I truly do not think I could achieve this and provide puppy buyers with the social and outgoing creatures that I do now, if I didn't have them in the house, being raised alongside the other dogs and my family. I have 5 bitches and two dogs, for some that's reached the magical line in the sand that would see me shut down.

I know where you're coming from TA. It is such a confusing topic, so many comments are made, I honestly don't know what to think. A few posters on DOL are saying that puppy farmers are not going to be affected, only the registered breeders will be affected, I can't see why. I do recall comments made here about laws being too stringent pertaining to anyone having 3 or more breeding bitches, planning permits required, etc etc which I sympathise with BUT I don't see how puppy millers won't be affected? I would certainly hope so. The puppy farms won't be impacted upon because they either exist in locations where they are not policed and fly under the radar or they already have council approval for their massive sheds and the dogs that go along with it. The average suburban ANKC dog breeder, doesn't have rows of DA approved kennels, there's a good chance that the majority wouldn't have a block sufficient to build and have such kennels approved either. The only breeders that will survive this, are the puppy farmers, the back yard breeders and the registered breeders that are foruntate to live in acreage that has exisitng kennels and are DA approved. What the RSPCA wants, would see me wiped out.

Base The Cost Of A Dog On Colour, Why?

Shut up you, I'm doing my best to be polite ;) I almost think that line is worthy of putting on the bottom of every puppy advert we do -
Base The Cost Of A Dog On Colour, Why?

And the really scary part is that they are NOT rare. I still can't understand how seemingly intelligent people can look through the adverts on here (just as an example) and see that of the 90-odd adverts 50+ will be for blue pups - and still believe the colour is rare. I think perhaps people allow themselves to be deluded so they can rationalise their desire to own something which costs way more than any sensible person would pay for an otherwise substandard item. I know I shouldn't laugh but that's a classic -
Base The Cost Of A Dog On Colour, Why?
WreckitWhippet replied to Kristin Dwyer's topic in General Dog Discussion
I have a preference as both an exhibitor and breeder for coat colour. I love my black brindles and the less brindle and white I have on them the better. There's nothing wrong with that and I'm not alone but it's what breeders are prepared to sacrafice in order to get/maintain that colour preference that sorts the wheat from the chaff. I personally look for the best match for the dogs and bitches in terms of type, temperament, structure and soundness, the choice can be any colour, providing it's within the breed standard and will produce pups that are the same. For me that means no dilutes or any animal likely to produce a dilute but I'm open to the red, brindle, white, pied and everything else accpetable. No colour should cost more than another. -
That slap happy advice is perhaps some of the worst I've seen handed out on DOL. Hi RSG, Not sure if I've got this quoting thing right, but this is the diet recommended by some Leonberger breeders, in particularly one from NZ who sends a lot of her puppies here, so Lionelmessi could just be following the breeders' advice. Just because it might be one breeders advice, it does not mean the slap happy attitude and she'll be right approach is appropriate for anothers pups. What does " just try and get in some calcium" really mean ? how much calcium, how much chicken, what percentage of red meat and what amount of red meat minus the bone will throw the calium/phos ratiois out of balance. I'm all for raw feeding and there are some breeders where you can afford to be a little less scientific and specific regarding amount, but in my opinion anyone "growing" a Giant breed, should best consult their breeder when it comes to diet or those with year of experience who have successfully raised many pups on raw. Feeding raw can come second nature to some and naturally it's not stressfull, but for those starting out and seeking advice, it should be approached with caution

You're correct, they're the conditions which characterise puppy-farming. I'd add, even on a small scale, when a few dogs are kept, extremely poorly, in a backyard. I was pleased to see that the RSPCA Qld anti-puppy farming material has also picked up on the Qld research re the critical need for early socialisation of puppies, destined to live alongside people. Without that being hardwired, there's likelihood of behavioral difficulties later on. (With the extent of socialisation of the mother dog, also having effects.) The high incidence of unplanned litters emerged as another 'flag' of puppy-farming style. Registered breeders in Qld don't have a lot to fear. The same research showed they were the ones who performed extremely well on both these key aspects. Unregistered breeders did not perform well...& especially badly re lack of control of litters. Mita you seem to think that the ethical registered breeders of QLD will have nothing to fear from the RSPCA. I think they are all in for a whole lot of heartache and a license just makes you a sitting duck.

I can bet if you did a survey on the people who have signed this, very few of them would have any idea just what they have pledged to support and what the consequences are for the average ANKC or other registered breeder in this country.
-
yep, new laws to give them powers where it comes to local plannig, where previously it was the domain of council they'll be able to walk and and shut down every breeder that has a litter on their loungeroom floor Spikes, nothing has changed but it's always been policy of the RSPCA to seize first and ask questions later when it suits them.
-
I'm a newbie here, but could someone explain to me how the RSPCA could possibly shut down a reputable ethical breeder? They can only take action on the basis of animal cruelty, they have no other legal avenues, and if you are an ethical, responsible breeder, you surely have nothing to fear? If the RSPCA has shown an interst in your operation, they could only do so if they had reason to do so???? What would that be? Do a search on the forum of RSPCA, some other things you might like to check out are Judy Gard and Rozzie If the RSCPA wants to shut me down as a breeder, they can do so in a heart beat, regarldless of how I treat my dogs. Simple things like not vaccinating yearly, treating certain conditions at home rather than using a vet, raising puppies in the loungeroom, having a docked dog in the house, having a debarked dog in the house. They don't need a reason and many breeders live in fear of them rocking up on the doorstep, seizing first and asking questions later. It's not just breeders their actions will put an end to but independent rescue's as well.
-
perhaps you'd best draw a little pic of exaclty where you want people to measure to and from
-
in a nutshell yes, that's how it's going to play out
-
perhaps you need to define for some what a brachy is
-
I make no apologies. The RSPCA's current campaign of shut down the puppy farmer, isn't going to make a blind bit of difference to those sheds operating with council approval. The one's that are going to be shut down are the registered breeders.
-
All well and good except that the RSPCA want to shut the lot of us down, not just those farming puppies... but I guess that doesn't matter, as long as the puppy farms are gone right ? ETA: they'll just blindly sign whatever the RSPCA sticks infront of their noses.
-
oh yes please but I'm guessing it won't be funny or entertaining for breeders

and dogs are supposed to be " mans best friend"

Ohh I forgot one. My SBT male was reverse sneezing one night and I rolled over in bed, still half asleep to open his mouth and stop it. I scared him ( i think ) failed to open his mouth and somehow stuck my thumb in and he put a canine through my thumb nail and into my hand. That was not pretty at 2am ETA: I think I have buried the more painfull memories but they are all flooding back now. Audrey pierced my ear last year at the SBT Specialty in Newcastle, that made for a crap end to a great winning day, with an 8 week old baby canine put through it :D blood and needing to lay down was how that one ended SBT's are bad for your health

My other half was smacked in the mouth by my Whippet. It was bad enough that it should have been stitched. He'd made her do zoomies on the lounge and paid the price, I told him to suck it up and there was no sympathy from me. I believe smacks to the head, from Whippets are common place My darling SBT bitch ran down the leash free, lauched herself at head height from behind and sunk her teeth into my shoulder on the way past. My friends SBT tore her pants off and bit her on the arse while swimming in the dam. My darling Pinky.. the more she loves you, the more injuries she inflicts, this is inherited from her mother.

There is now way on this earth I'd let a 12 year old out of the car to chase unknown dogs in a high traffic area. Lovely thought but poorly executed and a very stupid move on the part of the parent. Next time ... call the Ranger
