Chronic Unknown Skin Condition - Desperate
WreckitWhippet replied to pixandpug's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had to make a very hard decision last week. It wasn't cancer but I still had to decide between quality of life and letting a girl of mine go on. It sucks but if you have or do decide to let him go, make the most of the last days. There is one thing I can say and that is, there is a sense of relief when it's all over. The pain and suffering has been taken away and you come to realise just how much stress and worry you;ve been through during the illness. I feel for you and Oscar. -
Manuka honey 20+ works wonders. It's inconvenient and means quarantine for dogs but it's usually nothing to worry about. It's pups, the old and the already compromised dogs that suffer with it. Vaccinating is a waste of time

My Staffy Is Still Jumping Fence
WreckitWhippet replied to Shaybay's topic in General Dog Discussion
You'll be up for a min of $165 if she gets out and that's just the start of possible fines and then you'll have impound charges on top of that. -
I'd give him at least 12-18 months before neutering. Give him a chance to grow and mature.

Council generally side with the owners of an injured dog, injured child or the person who has felt threatened by a dogs behaviour. You can deny it all you like but if council feels that the dog has attacked or poses a threat they will issue a notice of intent ( NSW) and if you;ve got enough money, solicitor or knowledge, you might get lucky and get off.
-
It should be reported to the ranger/council straight away. The owner could be looking at a notice of intent to declare the dog dangerous, if council decide to go down this path.

Desmopressin Eye Drops
WreckitWhippet replied to WreckitWhippet's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm in a no win situation and I'm looking to buy a dog some more time. Side effects are a huge concern. -
Anyone currently treating a dog and if so, what do they normally pay for the drops ETA: The most important thing I forgot to ask , was the side effects and if anyone has experienced any.

It would have been a non-award for me If they were mine, neither would have made the ring and would have been desexed and pet homed. There are plain but sound dogs and bitches and there's nothing wrong with that, but an animal that lacks the "hall marks" of a breed is no better than an unsound animal. Type, temperament, structure and soundness...

Better still, if it's roaming, shoot it

DIY fencing , unless you are very expereinced at it, usually ends in dogs escaping. If you are going to leave them in a run, it's best that they are left on concrete or it has a concrete footing. Dogs easily dig and push under DIY fencing, or they simply put pressure on it , if it's not strained properly and walk through it. You would need to extra long star pickets and either a double height dog mesh or cyclone mesh, both of which will need to be strained. By the time you buy all of the gear, a gate and do it properly, you may as well have purchased a run.

I would also take him off any advocate, frontline etc ( if he's on any ) and cease the exposure to moxidectin, permethrin etc Ivermectin injections would have hindered his recovery, in the absence of any mites. -

I wouldn't bath him in any medicated shampoos, his skin needs to be soothed. I would make sure he does not have any coulour, flavours or preservatives in his diet. Check his bedding, remove any hession and wool bedding. If you aren't already using cotton, I'd switch to that and also make sure you washing powder is for sensitive people. If he's scratching that crazily, put cotton socks on his back feet and bandage them up, so he at least can't use his claws to further damage his skin. ETA: I forgot to add "Calendula Tea" to sooth. Also avoid spraying any chemicals near the dog, if you disinfect the floor, make sure you dry it 100%. I'd switch to using natural cleaning solutions and keeping the chemicals to the bare essentials -
Is That A Male Newf, I Want To Use Him To Breed
WreckitWhippet replied to newfsie's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've had the same, ask which one is a dog, ask to use it before they even know if he's in the group being walked. Stare blankly when you say, not available at stud and then ask do you have another one they could use... -
If he's three and you aren't using him in an ANKC registered breeding program, then he's fine to neuter and you can be sure that it's not going to happen again.
-
Forget about the head and the " puppy" look, he lacks breed type, to the point where it's difficult to tell what breed he actually is.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I don;t think that is an issue in Australia, as it's not sold here or wasn't last time the warning was posted.

If you plan of having entire dogs of both sexes, then the very least an owner can do is research so they know what to expect, in terms of behaviours and seasons. They should also have facilities that allow them to seperate the dogs. For big strong bull breeds, this means big strong enclosures. You won't know if you need to keep them within eyesight of each other until the time comes, but quite often this helps to keep the males settled. You may also need to look at drugging certain males for a couple of days or removing them from the premises and putting them in kennels. It's too bloody late to ask for advice when the bitch is in and the neighbours are complaining about the noise the dog is making. The breeders of both the dog and bitch should have spoken to the OP about what to expect and also made sure that they have the facilities to own an entires dogs and bitches.

How old is the dog ?
-
ACE will solve the problem for the short term and will stop the neighbours from going off the deep end.
-
You really shouldn;t be keeping enitire dogs and bitches, if you don;t even have the basic knowledge about a bitch and their seasons.
