I have come across a pretty good deal from E Bay for All Wormer Dog Worming tablets for small dogs, 1 x tablet x 10kg at $50 a bottle for x 100 tablets free post/delivery to most addresses. The tablets cover all types of worms, except heartworm. If anyone interested just PM me.

Went with a friend and her dog, with similar symptoms,to the vet on Monday, and it was an abscess from a broken tooth, which was removed by surgery yesterday.Anti biotics started to bring the swelling down before the surgery. Hope your fellow has something simple and easily fixed.

I had an Australian Silky Patrick, that was incontinent and had been for quite a while. It was distressing for him and and despite all the tests/ultra sounds etc etc there was no diagnosis as to cause. So my vet tried him on Incurin and it worked. He remained on the meds for the rest of his life, with no problems and no incontinence. I had it compounded as Patrick was soooooo difficult to take tablets. The fluid was so much easier.Exepensive by comparison but worth every cent, for his happiness and comfort.

I hope LDH are not putting in a tender for Campbelltown Pound, or worse still, if they do,that they win it. -
Donation Receipt Question
honeybun replied to Maddy's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
One thing that should be on a receipt for a tax deductible donation is the statement that Donations over $2 are tax deductible. Not all donations to charities are. The charity involved has to have DGR - Deductible Gift Recipient - status from the Australian Taxation Office. -
Donations are like gold, as are donors, and should be treated as such and money raised from donations used directly in the care of the animals rescued. It depends on what tangents some rescue groups [and this would be a very small minority] go down, which needs cash injection, and expenses which are not directly animal / rescue related but are more rescuer related. I think a good test is to ask yourself, when spending donated money, would that donor that gave their last $10 be happy that their donation was spent on that expense. Most donors would like to think their donation went to help an animal in need, saved a life, eased pain and suffering, provided food and a warm bed etc That same donor would not like to think their donation went on fanciful ideas, personal expenses or into someones pocket. That is why Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing is there [in NSW] to investigate cases where donations are perhaps not properly spent or accounted for. Trouble is, few people ever report cases of misuse of donations or become aware of them.Taking all claims by rescues on face value, and their sob stories as fact or have access to financial reports of the organisation to see where moneys went. The heartening aspect is that the greater majority of rescues are well run with only the best of intentions.

Stray Cats - To Feed Or Not To Feed
honeybun replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
This is such a difficult issue. I had a long term local stray start to steal food from my own cats bowls, and I thought I was only supplementing its diet,by default. But I went away for 10 days and when we returned home, the stray presented himself at the back door, almost skeletal. I then realised it had been depending on us for his food completley. My husband befriended him and I trapped him, had him desexed , chipped, vaccinated etc and he now lives with us and is actualy the best cat we have ever owned, and we have had some wondeful cats.He adores my husband and is a big bruiser of a boy, battle scarred but looks so much better now.All those last 8 years when he had no one, makes me sad to think of what his life must have been. You would only catch a glimpse of him running through the yard or across the street late at night, and could never get near him. I also had a 6 week old kitten dumped in my backyard and it was semi feral, so had to trap it and a friend socialised it whilst we were away those 10 days and then I had him desexed, chipped etc. So now have 3 cats. But colonies would be more difficult.Trapping is easier if it is in your own backyard, but to place the trap away would risk the cat being hurt the time it is in the trap with no one around. The kitten was trapped within a few seconds and only cried, but my old tom although he took only minutes to be trapped, threw himself around the cage and was lucky I was only a few feet away, and made sure he didnt hurt himself. -
I transport regularly. and am always worried about what a new dog may bring with it. Of course there are other worries apaert from parvo, but of course not as bad. Like whip worm and contagious skin diseases, a couple I have struck recently. I use F10, found bleach badly damages my crates. Throw away any towels, mats etc.

Thankyou for all your advice/suggestions. Sadly, the puppies have all passed away. One by one, over night, every couple of hours.,last one at 7am. A big thankyou to Lisa from Maggies Rescue who came out in the cold wet night air to drop off some special drops and if the pups survived the night there was also the offer of a nursing Mum.I am very grateful for her help and support. My husband drove back to Lisa's home and borrowed an electric heat pad which did help, as no matter what I did I couldnt get them warm, they had no body heat at all, and a reheatable heat pad didnt do the job.I had them in a very warm room in front of a heater and in warm bedding. Then one had the extra issue of an umbilical cord that had started bleeding and I had to tie off, but had lost a bit of blood [given itssmall size] before I found that out. To be honest I doubt they had a real chance, just too early, too small. But I am pleased I tried, as had we not, I would have always wondered that they may have survived if we put had only put in the hard yards. I cant provide any more info re the mum.I know the vet tried everything before I went into the clinic. He is a very thorough and dedicated vet,so I would always heed his advice.

Thanks for that suggestion.... I will try anything. Obviously I will continue to care for them, but thought they would fare better with the "real" thing". Vet doesn't hold out a lot of hope as they were born last night and spent the night in the pound with their mother but receiving no care or attention from her apparently. Vet make valiant efforts to try to get her interested but she is completely useless in this regard, despite his best efforts. I have the pups ,the mum is still with the vets.

PAWS has rescued a mother from Hawkesbury Pound who had given birth last night to 6 pups. Two died before they were taken into care and one had to be put to sleep. This leaves 3 pups needing milk. They were not able to get any mothers milk. The mother has rejected the puppies completely,so I am caring for them feeding them every 20 minutes under vet instructions. They are Maltese and VERY tiny. We thought the puppies may have a better chance at survival if they could be taken under the wing of another dog,who would accept them. If by chance any one in rescue in the metropolitan area has a good mum that might taken on our pups,we would be most grateful. If you are able to help would you please phone Denise on 0405244871 or Christine on 95973252. Thanks,

Thanks for the plug for this dear old girl. However the carer has advised me this evening that she has found a wonderful new home and therefore is no longer available. -
Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter
honeybun replied to HeelerLove's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
It is a hard lesson to learn .......to say NO, and live within your means [or the rescue's means]. Also, that you can't save them all, sad as it may be, it is true. To ignore both points means, the animals you have suffer, and ultimately you yourself suffer when it all comes tumbling down. -

The Licence takes around 28 days to secure, if your application is successful. I know,as I successfully applied for one for one group with whom I am associated. -

Agree entirely.:) The public need to have some assurance that when they make a donation to a group purporting to be a charity/not-for-profit, that there are government regulations ensuring there is accountability by that group, and the dontions are being properly used for the purpose for which the group has been set up, and not being siphoned off to some other use or someones own use. It is hard enough to get donations, and there a lot out there competing for the charity dollar, so that if one bad apple spoils it for the rest, or makes it harder, then that is very annoying. -

As I said I did it for two groups, Cant see the $5000 charge, seems a bit hefty to me. I have heard of agroup that paid just under a $1000. A lot of paperwork but if one applies oneself it is able to be achieved. Both of these groups are audited each year and we readily comply with all requirements, Again, a lot of reports and paperwork, but that is to be expected, You cant expect it to be anything less if you are seeking and receiving donations from the public. You have to be accountable. -

Cannot understand the comment that the costs of tax deductibility status are staggering. I have achieved it for two rescues at no cost. to me or to the rescues. -
How Does Your Rescue Group Work?
honeybun replied to Loreley's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
A few years back I tried all the councils in the area relating to the shelter I was at ,at that time, and the majority told me they only gave grants to human charities, the others we were not successful in getting a grant. There is also some of the banks that offer granst, but again we were not successful. I applied for many grants,at that time. Some grants are for education purposes, the making of dvds etc, which are very time consuming. Grants usually come with a lot of strings attached, understandably, and the problem is you have to weigh up whether in your particular circumstances, you can abide by the requirements and time limit constraints. To be honest, usually in rescues ,each team member is always very busy with their particular tasks, and to add yet another "job" to the mix is often out of the question. I have tried various companies for animal related products, either for donated stock or for the purchase of items as a reduced rate. I have had only one success, just recently, and that was to buy their products at a discount. In our situation, adoption fees do vary, often depending on age and health. Some of our golden oldies have had very large amounts spent on vet work but the adoption fee is $150 or $200.The usual adoption fee is $400 .Most require desexing, often dentals and of course often health issues for investigation and treatment. I know a lot of people think the dogs should be free, but they never stop to think about what goes on behind the scenes and what costs are involved in getting that dog to the point where an adoption is possible. -
How Does Your Rescue Group Work?
honeybun replied to Loreley's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I would imagine there would be very little by way of government grants for rescue groups to assist with their day to day operation. DGR ...Deductible Gift Recipient status from the ATO is necessary for tax deductible donations, and an authority or licence to fundraise is another necessity. But these enable the rescue group to seek donations, and are not an actual grant from the government. Surrender fees sound like a good idea but I would imagine most rescue groups never receive any.Probably they person surrendering would just prefer to dump the dog at the pound than pay a rescue group or claim they cannot afford to pay fees. As Dogmad said, the rescue groups priority is to save the dog, and get it into safe hands.
