Camera Goober Needs Advice Please!
minimax replied to Little Gifts's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
What sort of jewellery do you photograph? The best thing you can buy are the stands to put them on - you know the dummies so they sit nicely and look like someone is wearing them? Otherwise, yes white backgrounds are good. Something non-reflective like fabric works well. Close-ups: do what works for you. Zooming means you have to have a steady hand or tripod. Being closer might work better. Everything is experimenting, there are no simple answers and what works for someone might not work for you and you might not like what someone else likes. Half the fun is playing ;) -
Look for one that is run by a qualified trainer, not just a vet nurse. All the major vets run them, I did mine at my local vet in Drummoyne but I've heard good things about Dog Logic http://www.doglogic.com.au/ (I see them training at Leichhardt dog parks on a Sunday, adults though not pups, and they look like they are having fun! Plus their dogs are cute lol)

May I ask who you are insured with now & why? The whole insurance thing & which one to choose is very confusing atm as I would like, what most want, value for money. Feel free to PM me if that suits you, thanks :) I changed to Petplan. Just before Hamish came home I did a bundle of research (as between signing Kenz up and getting Hamish was when they did the policy change). As you'd know with old Emma's medical history I'm a bit scared of not having insurance, and for those who don't know - in her last 6 months of life I spent about $10,000 all of which would have been covered by insurance if she had been insured (too old when I got her)!!! So Kenzie was with 1300Insurance, but they did the swap from 100% cover to 75% cover, premium went up, more research made me realise that they only cover things for the first 12 months they have the problem then it counts as a chronic condition which is pre-existing and they won't cover it any more. Changed to Petplan because the premium was the same as what I was paying, the payouts would be similar to what I would have gotten with 1300 or better, excess was less, and they cover conditions for life. After having a diabetic dog that's really important to me! These days I don't see how any new dog owner would go with anyone but PetPlan. Everyone else just seems to be screwing people over with less cover and higher premiums. I mean, yes PetPlan are also raising premiums/raising the excess etc but they still have the best cover.

I had a dog called Moet when I was little ... I named her for the bottles that were always around our house Now I have Max (female) and Boston (male). Boston's litter brother is Bronx, because when I named Boston (Hugapug Missing in Boston) it started a bit of a litter naming theme with towns.

It makes me stomach hurt reading this. I can't believe something like this can happen, I'm so sorry I'd like to think the groomers didn't say anything because they didn't know what to say, they felt so bad that words couldn't express, but there are no excuses for what they did. I'm so glad the vets called to check on you. *hugs*

Medication To Treat Dog Aggression?
minimax replied to littlesev's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
What trainer suggested medication? Was she actually a trainer or was it through a vet where the "trainer" was a vet nurse? Going up and using their paws to greet other dogs is normal for little pups, they get over excited really quickly. It's up to you to teach him this isn't appropriate, by not letting him do it (as you hold the other end of the leash and can pull him back) and teaching him to greet a dog nicely. Also, laying on the ground and creeping towards dogs can be a playful thing. I'd be looking to take him somewhere with a qualified trainer, either as a one-on-one or group. Getting another pup so one pup can learn to play isn't a practical solution. -
I had a black cat called Blackie  In my defense she was mine and I named her, at age 7  OK, I'll let you get away with that one :p
-
Something worse than boring names is dogs named after their breed. Jack Russells called Jack/Jackie, Pugs calls Pugsley, Dalmatian called Spot, that sort of thing. Like a black cat called Blackie.

I have a Max, and although it's on the top list of names it's probably for boys, and my Max is a girl :D

Then she's not really "crate trained", is she? One would assume a crate trained dog is at least comfortable in a crate. I would bet not even 20% of the dog population is crate trained. Way to make a stressful vet visit even more stressful. The only time we've ever had problems in our vet waiting room was when someone with an aggressive dog sat by the door and we had to walk our dogs right under its nose to get them inside. We have a large waiting room and people don't sit on top of each other unless it's full. Even then, folks often stand in a corner to stay away from other people. I have never seen an unrestrained animal there in my memory. It's a very busy practice. Often if people's dog is acting up and disturbing other people or animals they will take them outside all on their own. Imagine that. There are members of the general public with common sense pertaining to animals. She will happily go in there when it suits her (which isn't very often) , so she's selectivly crate trained :p In my early days of puppy ownership I was led to believe I owned the only dog on the planet that was un-crate trainable. I've luckily since met other dogs who aren't crate trainable and have since sucessfully crate trained my other puppy, so no longer take it personally

Dog Bitten While In Boarding Kennel
minimax replied to Bisart Dobes's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm leaving my two pugs for one night with my mum this weekend. It will be her first time with them both overnight and although I trust her, I'm still terrified  I don't know how people leave them in kennels!!! -
I'm glad you clarified that, I was having trouble working out the links. I wonder if the real Ace Dog Supplies is aware of this 'club'? The club is merely a subdomain of the main site, so they would have to be aware of it, there is no way to create a subdomain other than through the primary domain. One is www but the other isn't. Does that mean anything? Nope, the www doesn't really mean anything, you can access sites with it. ie: acedogsupplies.com.au/ works. sub domains are anything.mainsite.com in this instance club.acedogsupplies.com.au and is just a site hosted on the acedogsupplies.com.au domain.

Not in those exact terms.. they won't understand 'faking pain', but they may well have learned to connect lying on the floor or something with you giving them cuddles! Much training is based on the premise that doing something will get them a reward, so it's quite possible that if your dog likes cuddles, he will have connected some sort of behaviour that we interpret as 'faking pain' as something that will get him a cuddle. I have known dogs to fake limps only when they see their owners watching, but the rest of the time walk fine. The second they see the owner watching ... limping again  how true...except they sometimes forget which leg it was and limp on the other side Yes, which is just so cute!

I think I saw somewhere that the week starts on a Monday

My dogs are crate trained, but one hates it and it stresses her out so not somwthing I'd do just for a trip to the vet. She's okay during vet stays and eventually settles in crate after a few hours (she was crate trained from day 1, she just never took to it) but I think it's unnecessary for a simple visit and if my vet insisted on it, I'd find another vet.

How strange and ridiculous. Imagine trying to get a Mastiff in a create who wasn't crate trained? I find most people love being in public with their dogs and like the interaction surrounding their pet. Those who don't usually have no hesitation is expressing this. Forcing animals out of sight seems unprofessional. If I was asked to do this on entry I would not return. Crating every dog to go to the vet sounds good in theory, but how many dogs in the real world are crate trained? One of mine would be fine, but the other hates the crate and it would cause so much stress. Plus the hassle of trying to take multiple dogs to the vet would just turn me off going! However, people obviously go there knowing the rules and some probably go there because that's a rule.

Chances are he's bluffing to scare you into backing down. I'd contact the rangers again, let them know he is intentionally letting his dog off when he sees you and is now threatening you (suing for harrasment can be taken as a threat).

My guys don't have regular walk times so I don't get the sad faces, but as soon as I pick up their harnesses both go nutty and I have to wrestle them in to them because they won't sit still.

Best Cool Mats - Has Anyone Tried Zentech?
minimax replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't like the idea of the ones with gel or any substance in them, just in case someone decides to have a chew or shred and some of the insides leak out and the dogs eat it. -
Lol Thanks, He's actually asleep on my leg, they are my jammies :D

Once I saw a pug x wearing a halti thing that goes over the nose, only it didn't have enough nose so it kept slipping off and the owner had the stop and put it back on. Apparently a trainer had suggested they use it, I wanted to ask if they actually thought it was helping, but decided to hold my tongue as the conversation would never have ended well. Common sense? Not so common.
