Anyone Here From Marrickville Can Answer What Breed It Is?
minimax replied to Katdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Excuse the photobomb from weirdo guy, but Katdogs is there where he lives? Couldn't find a dog, but I did find a few random other things on rooftops: Then I made the mistake of thinking I'd grab some lunch before I went to do what I actually was in Marrickville for (yes, I had a legit reason for being there, not just dog hunting  ). -

Maybe stick your head out the car window... & bark loudly? Katdogs did say it was attracted by passing dogs. Lol I was walking up and down the street. And barking in public is one low I refuse to stoop to (sober, at least). I've got some photos, I'll put them up when I get back to the office. -

OK, I can see where he probably lives, a rooftop terrace, but he's not there. Perhaps he's only out on the weekend, not during the week when his owners are at work. -

Okay, I'm leaving now. I'll update when I get there - regardless of my findings! Can't believe I'm going out in search of a dog on a rooftop. Only on DOL... -

I'm guessing Nearmap. Sucks that you have to pay now, just can't justify the cost I get access through work, same as Six :) -

It would be funny if you could actually see the dog on google Earth. I have much better maps than google earth, way more recent too, so I was half expecting to see it  Are your maps better than Six? I used to use Six for work at all sorts of locked off levels. I miss it. Our maps are more recent than Six. I find most of Six is almost as old as google maps, which is a few years, whereas the one I use is updated every few weeks. But I love the 1943 maps on Six! -

So that I'm not wandering around aimlessly, is it the direct corner of Marrickville Rd and Illawarra? I'm looking at a recent arial map I have of the area and can't see anything that looks like it could have a dog living on the roof at that intersection. -

Which Food Rewards To Use?
minimax replied to BrigadoonRose's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
The best treats are the ones your dogs will work for Right now, the thing my guys are doing cartwheels for is the dried lamb crumble puff things from Costco. Usually it's something that they don't get often, like bbq chicken, or cheese, or vegetmite on toast (or anything that comes from a humans plate) -
Phone Apps To Track Your Pets Health
minimax replied to Dory the Doted One's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use Pet Planner (android), but I don't know if it does heat cycles as I've no use for that. A google search shows me there is an app called My Pet that does heat cycles - Itunes link https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/my-pet/id566849086?mt=8 Not sure if it exists for android, but if you need it for that maybe you can look. Google is your friend :) -
There is an American one and an Aussie one by the looks of it, and thats the website for the American one. The Aussie one has a fb page that says "rescuing as many neglected animals as I can without going to prison for assault"

Stray Cats - To Feed Or Not To Feed
minimax replied to Mrs Rusty Bucket's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
We have an issue at the moment where a TNR would be perfect, but no one will do it. We currently have a depot cat where I work. She keeps pumping out the litters, and a few times the kittens have been caught, raised and adopted out. The mother has been caught once, I'm not sure of the reason, but people have been talking to some local vets (the Animal Referral Hospital in Homebush is just around the corner from us) and they have said they won't desex her because we can't regularly check the wound and ensure it's clean and not infected etc They did say we could think of a oral contraceptive which could be given in food each day, but it has to be each day and that's obviously not practical. And uh, can you please link to the law about feeding a stray makes you the owner? I highly doubt that's the case. If you trap a cat, you have to treat it humanely and this means providing it with food and water. It doesn't become yours. That's like saying "I found a stray dog wandering the streets, so I'm going to keep it". -
Looking For A Chi In Foster Care

I chose a black Pug over a fawn for this reason too. If there is a choice why not make it one that makes your life easier! Plus the whole thing of blacks being such so much more awesome :p -
Don't Know How Useful Petplan Would Be Since...
minimax replied to Chris the Rebel Wolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
What about a credit card that has a decent no interest period, so you don't use it except for an emergency? Then you whack the cost on there, and pay it off when you get the refund from the insurer. I think a lot of vets don't like accepting payment from the insurer because if they deny the claim, they have to hassle around with getting paid. Whereas that shouldn't be their problem, they should be focusing on being vets, not being account chasers. -
A Follow On Thread For Those Who Now Have Their Puppy
minimax replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Puppy Chat
well, my husband took him to the vet, who tried to stimulate a cough with pressure on his throat (apparently a good indicator of kennel cough, but not 100%), but didn't have any luck. However he decided to work under the assumption that it is kennel cough, and charged through the teeth for antibiotics and cough suppressant Not very happy. And my husband thinks I'm ridiculous for getting information from the internet and believing that antibiotics are not necessary at this stage. The vet told my husband that it is bacterial (he did check), though from what i read it's viral AND bacterial? So who knows. Given it's a shared decision, and hubby took him to the vet, he's now getting antibiotics. Having said that, he was definitely worse last night/this morning - coughing more often, and seems to alternate between hyper and a bit lethargic. Not sure if I'm imagining that though. Either way he'll be missing his obedience graduation and hopefully the antibiotics will help whatever it is, even if it isn't kennel cough. I gave him the cough medicine last night which didn't noticeably help, and his first antibiotics this morning. I really hope he starts to feel better soon. It sux knowing they're not well and you can't really do anything about it. When my pugs had kennel cough we used OTC human cough medicine (bisolven), much cheaper than any animal medicine and it's basically the same. But not a suppressant, because if there was any gunk in there I didn't want it sitting still and getting infected, I wanted them to move it and cough it up. I was running after them with tissues like they were toddlers with colds  The cough also seemed worse when they got cold, so try and keep him and the air warm (I think this is why it seems worse late at night and early morning, because the air gets colder). It is sad seeing them unwell, I actually thought my boy had an obstruction in his airway he was hacking and choking so badly, but it was "just" KC :/ -
the ones I buy in Melbourne and trust me, they have no smell. Oh yeah I wasn't correcting anyone, just the ones I buy stink. My dog loves them but even touching them makes me wash my hands right away. I'd be concerned if a dried animals penis didn't have a smell. I mean, really. How do you get that to not smell like nothing, without a weird process or chemical (natural, or otherwise?)

Could You Be Your Dog's 'heart Person'?
minimax replied to Little Gifts's topic in General Dog Discussion
Really? Get over it and stop picking a fight. So asking for where the scientific data is and wanting to clarify a point is picking a fight? Frankly, I find quite laughable (in a sad sort of way) the statements that some people make and most of the time couldn't care less. But when they profess to have it on scientific evidence and then can't produce that evidence, well sure you have to wonder? And when they say dogs are incapable of love and then say "Boof loves....." But, if that is picking a fight, well so be it. If you're so interested I'm sure you can find it yourself Http://scholar.google.com good luck. -
Could You Be Your Dog's 'heart Person'?
minimax replied to Little Gifts's topic in General Dog Discussion
The way to my girls heart is through her stomach, so she loves whoever feeds her  Boston gravitates towards whoever has a free hand to give him ear rubs or cuddles or anyone who's face is low enough for him to lick. Neither of them seem to have a 'favourite' out of my OH and me, but they sort of have different things that they prefer each of us for. Max will go to my OH if she's feeling sick and is going to puke, and will wake her up during the night if she needs to pee (although that came about because I never wake up, even with a pug stomping on my head  ). Boston will have cuddles in front of the TV with OH every night, then wakes up and come to bed with me. But he's never slept in her bed, ever. He has tried once or twice when I was restless, but he always came back in to me within an hour, which I think is really sweet :) -

Before you start implementing anything, it probably is best to figure out if it is your dogs, and if it is - if it's both or just one. It's hard to fix a problem when you don't know the exact problem, or if it exists. If they are barking, you don't know if it's because a bird or something is in the yard, or because they are playing with each other, or because someone brings their kids to play next door, or because someone walks their dog outside your house .... etc so monitoring the situation is the only way to figure out what's going on.

When my breeder does my guys, she sits on the floor almost in a lotus pose - leg around the lower half of the pug so they are held tightly and then having two free hands to hold the top half of them and dremel. Because they don't sit still, they wiggle and thrash about and you need to be an octopus to hold them! When I hold them like this I don't have a free hand to do nails, so it ends up with me holding them, legs wrapped around lower half, arms around top half and another person doing their nails
