  1. Purebred with papers or just looked like a particular breed? Whilst it may look like a purebred dog without papers you have no idea, not to mention the rest of the litter could look the complete opposite. No, no papers, that's why I said we were going by what they looked like. To be honest pounds will rarely if ever know if a dog is actually purebred as they would never get to see papers, only what's on the chip, if the chip says it's pure, who are they to disagree? Chip details can also be wrong - My pedigree Affen was chipped as an Affen X I know a Dane who was chipped as a Greyhound - simple error on the person entering the data into the database. Of course they can, but the pound only has that to go on. I had many dogs come in chipped as something and obviously something else. It seems that data entry errors are fairly common. One of my cats' microchip company details had his name completely wrong, my name wrong, and my address wrong. I also found that even though I had carefully, in block letters, filled in the correct breed details for Tarja for her council registration they had entered her as a different and even rarer breed, a Finnish Spitz! Yes, very common, we came across countless data entry errors, phone numbers, addresses, names, breeds, you name it. Scary to think even though I swapped the details over I may not be reached because of a data entry issue :/
  2. I wouldn't group flood evacuation plans and fire evacuation plans together, entirely different kettle of fish and often floods have more warning and aren't quite as quick to kill where as a fire can kill before the fire even reaches the location with smoke and heat and can be quick to change course and unpredictable to fight. I'm concerned because so many have their dogs boarded for Xmas and I know there are a few boarded at vets so not just kennels. Anyone have any personal experience with how a fire evacuation plan would go? I know in our house there is a buddy system for animals (modeled after a friends system) some call me crazy but I'm not leaving my fur babies if there is any chance of getting them out at all.
  3. In some cases sure but society in Australia is very geared towards pets we have some of the highest rates of pet/ dog owners world wide. Families often have dogs and have friends with dogs I'd say it's more personal experience and exposure that leads to these behaviors not patterns and cartoons. Those images wouldn't have been created if there wasn't a call for it.
  4. So I was wondering what are the policies if there is a fire at a vet clinic? What's the policy re the animals in their care and how do they manage this? I'm hoping someone with some experience can answer as I got to wondering with summer coming up how many vet clinics are bush fire ready and how many dogs may be lost depending on policy. Also does policy differ between clinics/ city& rural areas?
  5. Omg cute!!! They're adorable and mummy charm seems to be doing an amazing job
  6. Exactly I'd also like subsidized desexing or the option of paying it off maybe more of the low income owners would manage it then (often they will go without if their dog needs it but desexing isn't a need so gets delayed)
  7. Apologies I didn't mean to detract from your valid point just trying to lighten the mood I completely agree I will only buy from reputable breeders, rescues can't offer what im looking for and so don't suit me or my family. I will still donate and support but I won't be made to feel guilty for choosing to buy from an ethical breeder over a shelter/ rescue
  8. Have you tried adopting a human in Australia? It's pretty close to impossible.. But other countries have better adoption policies so they could slow breeding and instead adopt ;)
  9. Can always rely on an Aussie to lighten things up seriously confused as to why sighthounds were brought into it at all..
  10. Would be nice if a chip number could be sourced back to its original owner and thus the breeder. Would I hope lead to less being PTS as ethical breeders would I hope help rehome their dogs where possible and some accountability re the people it was sold to (which may give people more reason to seriously consider getting a puppy or dumping it in a pound) I'd also love to see chipping be mandatory before any animal leaves it's mum so we have less lost animals who are pts and hopefully back yard breeders would think a little harder if the costs of breeding went up a little (as many see it as free :/)
  11. Hopefully someone will educate her child/ren for her re dog safety
  12. Well clearly it's cos they can't herd and keep those Roo's in for you ;) (meant in a good natured way hoping I don't get bitten lol)
  13. I think that would be an interesting read. There does seem to be a high amount of huskies/ malamutes that show up in pounds. But I'm not sure how many Pure bred dogs show up in shelters as a whole. I'd like to hope it's not the ethical breeders dogs who end up there but the BYB who don't screen new owners properly.
  14. WTF?? why do stupid people breed.. Maybe humans should be put through some of the same criteria we put our bitches through before we let them have a litter ;)
  15. They are some truly adorable photos! Very very cute pup there even with the goofy ears ;)
  16. Yep same here! If people ever rang me looking for a particular breed or puppy I would actually go looking on DOL for registered breeders for them and have helped a number of people find a registered pedigree puppy instead of taking a rescue puppy. If you have one or a mix of one of the breeds theyre after do you offer those as options first? (just curious) they may be aware of breeders but trying rescue as an option first
  17. The red Merle is entire though? My boy isn't but was only desexed just before I got him and my friends is entire and we have the easy care. Are yours all from similar lines? I'd be interested to know how much it varies even in the same litter and how much it really is related to entire or neutered status
  18. Wow such different coats I'd never guess they were related and full litter mates. Look like very happy pups though I hope they enjoy their stay judging by their smiles I'd say they're having a blast with you :D
  19. Absolutely, jaymatt. On the day I saw the loose, huge (biggest I've seen!) Rottie, I asked the people inside the library to help....& described the dog and the danger he was in. The only men in the library went deaf & almost hid under a table. Four of us women went out to do something. Two librarians, a young woman and me, all experienced & caring dog owners. As I've explained, the Rottie was a sweetie.....suspicious of us strangers at first. But as soon as I crouched & called him 'darling', his face lit up. Here was friends!!!! 'Can you sit, sweetheart?' asked one of the other women. ' Sweetheart' obeyed with a thud, right on my foot!! The librarians led him off to their office to wait for his owners (ID on collar).....using a piece of string as a lead!!! I'm not arguing for people to be foolhardy or to place themselves in danger when there's pretty clear signs of that. But my first impression of the huge Rottie was how well-kept he was, in excellent condition, and wearing a handsome collar where his ID tags could be clearly seen. Chances were, we thought, that was a well-cared for dog, well socialised with his owners. Just like your sister's shepherd would be. We didn't corner him or 'go at him'. And he responded to the cues he already knew so well.....people are OK, especially when they call him 'darling' & 'sweetheart'! stories like this are amazing
  20. Good luck sounds like you'll have your hands full, can't wait to see pics sounds like an odd mix.
  21. My Aussie and my friends Aussie is the same but the Aussie I had visit for a while picked up Everything! You name it it would stick, every night was an ordeal brushing out the prickles he'd collected that day, he had a soft fluffy coat that felt gorgeous but very hard to maintain.
  22. Actually, it's not true. I have four pedigree dogs, and if I didn't have them it doesn't mean I'd be rescuing four dogs because I wouldn't. I wouldn't have any dogs. So my dogs are not taking up space in my house that four dogs in rescue could be using because I'd never get a rescue dog if it didn't have a pedigree. Same with my cats. well said and i definitely agree, i adopted my dog knowing where he was from and knowing if i ever needed to i can reach his breeder to discuss any concerns. i wouldnt have gotten a dog had he not become available to me and i cant say ill ever choose to go to a rescue for a dog, i like knowing where he is from i like knowing he has been screened for genetic issues being aware of his past and knowing what i am signing on for. it makes him much easier to trust around children and include in my daily life with family and friends. i cant see myself ever getting a puppy so to avoid many issues associated with adopting older dogs i look at older dogs from reputable breeders. a rescue cant give me those things that are so important to me and so i wont be adopting from a rescue for the foreseeable future. i will however continue to support rescue however i can.
