  1. Made an interesting read and I'm sure there will be new excuses coming in at this time of year
  2. A friend is looking into this breed so I was wondering if anyone had any breeders they'd recommend? also any tips and info I can pass onto them? They are most definitely wanting to be well informed to have at it with good bad and all the little things you've learnt along the way it's a family home environment decent size yard and fairly active family . Happy to give details as needed on them if it helps an informed opinion
  3. Pet quality means it has a flaw that makes it unsuitable to continue the line/ represent the breed while still remaining a lovely dog who would be suited to a companion/ pet lifestyle. This is not to say they cannot excell at agility / obedience or anything else just that they do not meet the high standards of that breed, they may have a mismark, overbite/ underbite, medical condition (though I'd hope that's not too common) etc any number of reasons that just means your dog isn't the ideal to represent that breed.. Though I have a very limited understanding so I may be wrong
  4. What a special little boy, so much heart there and clearly Ellie sees that. Lots of love in that photo I hope she finds a place soon to call her own she is so gorgeous
  5. Put up a sign (as many business/ factory sites do) stating you accept all liability etc should anything happen while you're on this property? Accept no liability whoops! I'm aware liability can be shared, but I was curious in response to post before mine if a sign stating you won't accept liability would have any effect?..
  6. What's a search reference I can use for hunting dog case?
  7. You don't need to plead ignorance as to knowledge of mum, you can (and should) report to police fill them in as to the ongoing situation and they will get family services involved, unfortunately a laymans opinion on child in danger doesn't mean as much as someone qualified/ who is a mandatory reporter. if your neighbors are also aware it's worth letting the police know so they can corroborate your story and push it through the system fast. I agree with PP in that you/ the dog would be help liable, I have seen gag signs that alert people as to the presence of a dog without the implied dog is aggressive that comes with the standard. We are going with a please be aware dogs live here too so ask first and shut the gate behind you. (though I'm not sure that's much help with a child who clearly is being neglected and I would assume hasn't been exposed to how to safely interact with a dog. ) As for the little dog that keeps provoking yours when you call the police call the council, heaven forbid it picks a fight with a loose dog while out with the child and something much worse than a hand bite may occur (not your responsibility I know) clearly the mum/ owner isn't coping maybe it's time to step in so child and dog aren't the ones who pay for it
  8. Omg wow some people just have no clue, why wouldn't they atleast have called the breeder first
  9. She is beautiful, I'm so sorry to hear you have to make this difficult decision thinking of you both
  10. Is there any chance he could still visit and play with mum and litter mates? That's quite young to remove a puppy from it's home as other have said. I'd stick to playing in the yard/ home especially as he isn't fully vaccinated and so young he would have no chance against parvo good luck and please make sure your cousin gets more informed
  11. Do you vaccinate if so how often Do you have a regular vet and does your dog require any medical support/ ongoing treatments (possibly make it about how regularly they visit the vet)
  12. Did your friend leave any provision for a vet check? Is there any chance you could call and ask if she would be ok with you getting the lab checked over as you are concerned?
  13. Is your dog indoor/ outdoor What if any training have you done with your dog and if applicable where (personal trainer, club, home etc) What if any other pets do you keep Is your dog used to work or volunteer
  14. Omg that poor bitch and little pup I hope that was enough to put her off breeding.
  15. So glad it has a positive outcome and they're back together.. ETA: is there somewhere I could send them a Christmas present (though it would be late ) I'm sure he is over the moon to have his mate back but I'd hate to think of either of them going without as a result and if I can help even a little I'd like to .
  16. Yes You ask those self-interested, dog neglecting creeps for their prefix and then explain that you don't cross-breed.You then advocate and promote pure bred dogs. If they want to listen explain the merits of a pedigree dog. But, it is not easy to persuade those people who have elevated themselves above our dogs, about how dogs cannot always speak for themselves. Sometimes people with pure bred dogs won't stick to the Code, or listen to wiser heads, either.Px How did you then end up with abitch at your home for a pre mating assessment without checking the situation out -"No, Lilly was here for assessment; 'pre-mating.' But, she was bred by steve which is why we initially considered her for mating." "I acted in good faith, and with that in mind and heart, and for that I thank the Lord that I was not knit together in this inaugural litter which I have no doubt was to become the seed for the establishment of BYB." The owner didn't have a prefix and you nearly helped create a litter of BYB puppies except she escaped and was recaptured and this was a couple of weeks ago. this directed at quoted poster or a general anecdote?
  17. I have never heard a rescue promote or otherwise encourage backyard breeding.. As for the other comment re our discussion I'll respond when I'm back home
  18. Ridiculous, if you're going to do it fine but show some courtesy and let people know so we can look after our animals... Easter down here was insane some idiot let fireworks off maybe 100M away without warning even knowing we had dogs with us :
  19. I have to disagree, I think it is possible to develop a new dog breed (which would be accepted by the ANKC), I'd hate to think that some line has been draw that no new breeds could come after. I struggle with the health argument because are there really any guarantees? But ethics poses a more interesting dilemma, it's a really interesting discussion, hmm do I brave starting a new topic? ;) . Well currently with known breeds there are certain tests run and certain issues known to be associated with that breed.. This varies depending on breed but I know with an aussie to ask about cea, hc, hips/ elbows, and MDR1 as a start and also (thanks to a friends lesson learnt the hard way) am aware enough to also check that the parents aren't Merle Merle to avoid issues there. With a new breed I do not know what I am signing on for, indeed the earlier generations would hold no promises with physical attributes much less traits relating to medical/ genetic conditions.. It would take an incredible amount of culling and very aggressive restrictive breeding practices to introduce a genuine new breed that would take generations to be able to offer anywhere near the predictability we can expect (to a certain level) of the current breeds available now. I do not think we have drawn a line I can for better or worse see many of the 'oodles' that are the current trend eventually making it to a recognized breed status and indeed it wasn't till the 90's that Aussies were recognized themselves (from memory correct me if I'm wrong) I cannot see how ethically a new breed can be introduced or how it is likely to happen without a huge number of misfit dogs being produced and how in a society where there is already such a problem with misfit outcasts of potential new breeds do we justify working towards creating a new breed when the ones we have already cater so well to any number of situations. (may be garbled I'll check at a sane hour ;) , but I hope my point comes across ok)
  20. I know this thread is a bit older but is there any news on poor bull and his owner? the court date would've been in december judging by dates?
  21. I don't know if I should hold out hope for the remaining 8 but if two were fortunate enough to make it perhaps they did too.
  22. True.. Any chance it would respond ok to a crate or perhaps the laundry? Not too hard to clean up and with some toys and the radio on pup may settle better and less barking? (remove all shreddables first as ososwift is right you may come home to a few less than ideal surprises if you don't know how this dog will react ;) )
  23. OMG!! there would be HELL to pay if that happened, id probably request they abort the litter or insist on having a say on pup placement/ being paid a fee.. (if i couldnt press charges any idea on if someone can do that?..) my boy is desexed but i hope to show my next dog so they probably wont be and this is my nightmare And people think it is all the registered breeders who are pumping out too many puppies!!!!! Well the general public anyway. I know of very few bitches that have had that many litters with a 6th in the planning! i unfortunately do know of a few registered breeders who have probably had close to that many litters from their bitches before they retire them (but none id buy from) i think that part of the issue may be that BYB is more about the money than the bitch and they often dont realise the harm it can do to breed their bitch every cycle that poor girl though not much of a life always having pups around (and yes i agree far too much of the overpopulation issues are blamed on ethical registered breeders while those same people will happily breed their dogs :mad )
  24. so i thought with some of the threads around family pets and how they fit in id share some pictures of a happy dog/ child combination that works just to prove it is possible ;)i can't take credit for this pair as this isn't my child or my dog (family i've worked with) but i have permission to share and it is one of my favorite pictures. i am hoping she will also pass me some of the kids with her Aussies (i am working on something for work regarding kids/ dogs and have asked her for help with parts of it)
