Glad you didn't have to go to the vet during the night . Hope you both have a better day today.
-
Yep, you'll be the walking dead in the morning... we've all had a few of those. Hope you don't have to do the trip to Fyshwick.

Dogs sure know how to worry you
-
It's barking. The fact that you're unable to determine what you consider to be a decent reason for it doesn't necessarily make it manipulative. Can he get outside to pee when he's in the laundry? I think an issue to explore is why it doesn't happen every night. That in itself suggests to me that there is some sort of cause. Blame and punishment aren't IMO a good response to this. See your vet. Get them to run a kidney function test while you're there.

I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt. Dogs don't "manipulate" us simply because they can. That's human behaviour.
-
is he trying to vomit but not producing anything? Is his stomach distended? If both of those are present, I'd be headed for the vet. Otherwise, he sounds nauseous. Watch him closely. If he starts getting restless or uncomfortable, head for the vet. Lets hope he's just off colour.

Symptoms of Canine Dementia Note points 5 and 7. I have a frustration barker here.
-
Sleep him in a crate.
-
Start with a vet check.. frankly it sounds a bit like dementia. There are both medications and diets that can slow the progression of the issue. Old dogs don't deal well with changes or set backs. They get frustrated and they bark. I would NOT punish this behaviour. To be quite frank I doubt he can help it. Are you absolutely sure he's warm enough? You've got him sleeping in the coldest room in the house.

Thinking About My Next Breed... Shortlist Now Chosen!
Salukifan replied to kiwifeathers's topic in General Dog Discussion
Whippet. Strong breed in NZ too. :) You can always try for one of the less common colours. Bland? You need to meet my dogs. Mind you, they're not usually jumping about at shows because its just another day at the office for them. Personally I find the Pharoahs and Ibizans too primitive in termperament for my taste. But you probably need to meet more of each. -
Took the words right out of my mouth although its possible that distress is not the motivation for the redirection. I've seen dogs redirect when they are triggering to aggression and they grab the closest thing. Some also do it when they are very excited. Essentially it's a signal that your dog is highly aroused. Solution is what Corvus has proposed - put some distance between you and the trigger for the behaviour - and that's other dogs.

Dogs Seized From No Kill Shelter
Salukifan replied to HeelerLove's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Because regulation restricts compassion don't ya know. Apparently those who care more than the rest of we mere mortals shouldn't have their saintly work inhibited by regulations about anything. This is not confined to the "angels" of dog rescue. Apparently some people really do believe that the end justifies any means. -
Hairless dogs need a lot of care too.

I think a lot of folk think "non-shedding" will mean a cleaner house (which it does) What they fail to realise is that "non-shedding" equals "high maintenance". I think some folk don't think non-shedders still shed into their coats, not onto the floor and furniture. And of course, that hair in the coat mats unless removed by brushing. And the coat grows and grows. Personally, I can think of no shedding breed comparable to a poodle in temperament and character.

Only if allowed to sleep inside and not allowed to free range.

How Often Do You Have To Cut Your Dogs Nails?
Salukifan replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
Show dogs are normally done at least once a fortnight. The other dogs? About once a month, if not more often. -
.And was he? Any marks? A strange dog rushing up to others is going to produce a range of responses. If the dog that chased yours off didn't actually bite him, I'd count my blessings and consider that a lesson learned. A dog in an offlead park won't necessarily want to play with others. Best to keep meetings more controlled.
-
Make sure you disclose his full medical history. Only fair on an adoptive family to know what they're potentially in for, noting that the stress of rehoming may well produce a recurrence.
-
Booge: I think this is going to make rehoming particularly challenging. 7 is old for a Boxer. An old Boxer with ongoing health issues has its best chance with breed rescue but even they can't produce miracles often.

If you believe that your dog has separation anxiety, I would seek the help of a qualified veterinary behaviourist. The condition is frequently misdiagnosed by owners and if it IS diagnosed, it generally requires owner behaviour changes and/or medication to resolve. The sooner you do something about it, the better. Rescue remedy was never intended to be given on a daily basis. Get professional help.

Mouthy pups and small children can be a pretty fraught combination. Sometimes all the learning that occurs is that the kids learn to avoid the dog.

You often let your dogs gnaw on your children?

What a strange comment.

Issues like this play out in threads here over and over again.

Todders cannot "teach" a puppy not to mouth them or jump on them, nor can they "learn" appropriate avoidance. A largely overlooked gem of a breed IMO that deserves more consideration from families. Lovely dogs. :)

Cheapest Place To Buy Royal Canin?
Salukifan replied to cassie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm not a breeder so does that rule me out? Silly question? Thanks for the Petstock tip though :) Pretty much. You need a prefix for them to consider you generally. But do you know anyone who IS a breeder??? -
