  1. I have done it once. A dog picked up one of my poodles in its mouth and shook it (spraining his hip) and was coming back in hard for the second one. Poodle 1 is screaming in my arms, Poodle 2 is a sitting duck. Owner off some distance paying no attention with young child supposedly in control of the dog. I didn't hesitate to kick the crap out of it. I did get abused. Meh. And I got told that as a small dog owner "I over reacted". Riiiight. Perhaps I should only react to the sight of blood? That was the last time I ever took the little dogs to a fenced, populated off leash area. I consider the lesson learned to be quite a cheap one. My dog survived.
  2. The difficulty you confront is that a dog owner who doesn't know you or your dog, doesn't know that. They don't know how savvy you are or that you have an effective recall. They operate blind. I agree that taking a nervous or reactive dog on lead into a busy, designated offlead area isn't wise. But focussing on the original scenario in this thread, as explained by Diva, that wasn't the case here.
  3. In my case, I was in an on leash area. I do take my dogs to offleash areas but only if they are empty.
  4. Yep. But I'd expect the worst reactions from protective or worried owners. I've had a fear aggressive dog attacked because it reacted negatively to another dog's approach. Not fun. Again I didn't punch anyone. Easy solution - I don't let my dogs approach other people's dogs unless I know them. Period.
  5. I have green eyes, orangey red eyes and bright blue eyes here!
  6. Could have been frightened, or protective or spooked because his dog was dog aggressive. I'd be pissed too if two dogs bolted up to mine barking with their owner unconcerned. I wouldn't come out swinging though.
  7. That's easy for you to say, southerner ;) ETA - the guy on the far right looks suitably embarrassed. No such issues here.. the drug dealers run a tight ship
  8. Noisy and bad mannered are out too - but of course those are subjective views. Population of the USA is about 319 million. I love my dogs but I respect the fact that I work with people who don't. And frankly, I don't love noisy or poorly behaved dogs where I have to be for 8+ hours a day trying to concentrate. I don't think the place I work (office environment in a large open plan building) is suitable for dogs. If you go ahead, be prepared for negative reactions and to clean up accidents. Take lots of baby wipes. Same deal as if you bring your child to the office - not the cleaner's job to clean up vomit IMO.
  9. The day the purebred dog world embraces the breeding of "pets" as every bit as important as breeding show dogs, we'll get "pet" owners on our side. Frankly the attitude of some dog breeders is alienating the very people we want lobbying for us. "Pet" is NOT a dirty word. It's what the majority of purebred dogs are, including quite a few show dogs. I whole heartedly agree with Corvus about the need to improve self regulation. If the purebred dog fancy won't grasp the nettle on that issue, we'll get what's coming to us - at quite a rate of knots now. If we wanted to be treated as "special" or "different" then we need to prove we deserve that.
  10. Keeping a food diary is a really good idea. What do you feed her?
  11. Sounds a bit odd to me, why would you want your dogs out there getting a reputation for being infertile? I'd have thought there would still be a pretty obvious surgical wound on the bitches
  12. From my limited experience, I have found that sighthounds have a strong startle reflex - that may explain the reaction if woken. If he's been kennelled as race dog and then an only dog, having other dogs around while he's asleep will also be new to him. Welcome to the world of sighthounds Winterpaws! :)
  13. Threshold question: Is he on the Main Register? His papers should tell you.
  14. The coconut oil you use is NOT from the supermarket. Only buy cold pressed organic coconut oil from the health food shops. :) Thanks. Would i get the evening primrose oil there too? The health food shop at Fyshwick markets has really good prices on many lines & stock several brands of coconut oil. :) ETA At this time of year the coconut oil is solid, but my guys eat it straight out of the jar. Costco also has it for about half the price I've been paying in the health food shop!
  15. I call this the "oh my God, what have I done" moment. Yep, had it with each and every dog. It passes. All change is stressful, even if it's one you have chosen to undertake. A new dog is change.
  16. Actually, reckless indifference to human life for the consequences of an act will also get you there. There doesn't have to be intent if they can prove that the owner knew his dogs posed a risk to people from attack and did not act to contain them.
  17. Rubbish. Poll it if you don't believe me. Most people DO NOT support BSL.
  18. Good. Should have happened earlier And there you have it.
  19. I made stew for Darcy after his bouts of HGA. Personally, if it's not long term, I'd not worry too much about supplementing.
  20. From where I sit there seems to be bugger all resources being devoted to the issue at all. Why is it that nearly every dog that features in a serious attack seems to be known to Council. Killer dogs don't come out of nowhere. I wish someone would profile the histories of dangerous dogs. Seems to me that the same profile of dog and owner plays out time and again and bugger all is being done to stop these situations repeating themselves.
  21. Personally I think it's neither. Ignorance and lack of responsibility by owners and some breeders are the problems. Education and penalty enforcement for those doing the wrong things are the solutions. While ever BSL is the focus, neither the problem nor the solutions THAT WORK can be focussed on. And those who wish to see BSL repealed need to acknowledge the very genuine fears that some breeds arouse in the public rather than heaping shite on those who are afraid. I am anti BSL but sick to death of powerful, dog aggressive dogs owned by morons creating issues for people in the community, me included. And when their owners refuse to acknowledge the issue, it's made worse. God knows how anyone who's been attacked by a dog or had a loved one attacked can hold any view other than restricting such dogs in the community.
  22. I am in screaming agreement with you on this Corvus. Quick, someone alert the media!!
  23. Not feeding raw may be to lower the potential bacterial levels in his diet while his immune system is compromised. There are grain free kibbles around, perhaps one of those and some cooked protein sources might be an idea.
