  1. Does it matter? Those sound like very serious injuries Maybe not to you but I'd like to know why it happened. I agree, it is useful to know. But in this case, we're unlikely to find out. The only human witness is 6 years old with severe facial injuries. And sadly, the bites from a fearful dog, a resource guarder, a dominant dog and a dog in pain can inflict the same wounds. Knowing why won't help anyone in this case.
  2. I love my dogs. I don't necessarily love other people's dogs and I certainly don't expect other people to love mine. Its a work place, not doggy day care. Unless you're the business owner or work in an animal related business, I think dogs should stay home. I really don't think dogs and office buildings are a good combinatino. Dogs requiring nursing might be a bit different but why should people be expected to tolerate the presence of your dogs where they work. (I feel a bit the same about kids actually ) One person SHOULD be able to "ruin it" for all - it's not a majority vote that matters in such cases. A single voice in this instance should be listened to. No different to other workplace issues where what the majority think is OK makes an individual very uncomfortable. And as for tradies dogs - don't start me. :
  3. A roofed, concrete floored run is the only sure bet. Fence jumping is a highly self rewarding habit that's damned hard to break for that reason. I'm sorry you're finding that out the hard way.
  4. Supervision or separation might be done better. There were no witnesses. The child was alone and knew the dog.

  6. What was the condition and what was the surgery? We're not talking about juvenile pubic symphysiodesis are we? Growth issues aren't always genetic. Diet, exercise levels etc can play a part. Unless we know precisely what you're talking about, its a bit hard to advise.
  7. And that folks, is EXACTLY how BSL is justified. Some Pitbulls are aggressive to people. Therefore all Pitbulls are aggressive to people. There is "typical" or desirable breed behaviour but not all individuals of a breed display it. You improve the odds of a particular trait by line breeding but you don't guarantee it. Are all AST's dog aggressive? Do all German Shepherds have the capacity to be police dogs? Will all Whippets chase prey? Will all gundogs retrieve? Conversely, are no ASTs human aggressive? Nope. And to assume otherwise is to assume wrongly. We're probably not talking about a purebred dog here anyway.
  8. I don't share your confidence in the descriptions being accurate. I've watched a room full of dog trainers puzzle slides of canine behaviours put up for discussion. How is a pet dog owner supposed to get it completely right? The line between a play bow and stalking behaviour can be a fine one. The odds of a five month old pup displaying predatory behaviour to its owner are extremely slim but my view is never say never until you've seen the behaviour for yourself. Puts me in mind of a trainer who was contacted by the owner of a Golden Retriever pup complaining about the pup biting them. She said the owner had contacted a few people who wrote it off as mouthing and dispensed the usual advice. When she visited the house, the owner showed her the sort of bites the pup was inflicting - they were deep wounds. It had a serious aggression problem.
  9. Any trainer that would deal with a particular dog's behaviour by attributing it to its breed would be one I'd run a mile from. You deal with the specific behaviour in the dog in front of you, not any generalised notion of what you think you might "know" about the breed you're dealing with. There are plenty of atypical dogs around and plenty of trainers who've learned the hard way that dogs don't always behave in ways you might expect. Assumption is the fast track to trouble in my opinion. Observation is how all experienced trainers commence dealing with a dog. This sort of thinking is how we got BSL in the first place. You CAN NOT assume that because a dog is a particular breed, it will have a particular temperament, triggers or traits. Genes make up only a part of how a dog behaves. You need to factor in all the other issues before you have an accurate analysis of the dog you are dealing with. Anyone game enough to make an assessment of a dog's behaviour based on owner description and not direct observation is playing with fire. I don't care how well you think you know a breed peeps, you do not know THIS dog. Have a care about the reassurances you're giving here. I hope you both realise that the dog's breed is by no means certain anyway.
  10. Can I politely suggest you get a better form of containment sorted ASAP. Chained dogs are MASSIVELY over represented in dog bite incidents because they get tangled and they cannnot move away from kids. How do you ensure your daughter never goes near the pup while he's chained? A prefabricated outdoor run would be a better, and safer idea.
  11. You were playing rough with him up until now weren't you? If you're still doing it, STOP. Get professional help. Get it now. It won't be cheap if its any good but quite frankly, your safety and that of your family is at stake here. No one can tell you what you're dealing with without seeing it but I will give you one more piece of advice. DO NOT INVITE THE DOG TO HAVE A GO AT YOU. The day you trigger him to bite you is the day you sign his death warrant and potentially the day you end up with some serious physical damage. This situation calls for a cool head and de-escalation of the situation, not confrontation.
  12. Amen to that. Five years ago, it took some hunting and a personal reference to breeder for me to obtan a Whippet male for the show ring. Now I am in the position of having people offer me pups.
  13. There's your first research topic. If you are interested in breeding for the betterment of the breed, bitches whelp naturally and make good mothers should be what you aim to source. i understand they are out there.
  14. Take him to a decent chiropractor and have his hip alignment checked. This has made a massive difference to several dogs I know.
  15. Read Read Read. Everything you can find on your breed of choice and breeding. Visit a few dog shows. Join your State breed club if you have one. Buy a Main Register DOG of the lines you are interested in, show him and get to know the ropes of the purebred fancy and breeders of your breed. Wait a couple of years and then try for a female - the best you can buy to be your foundation bitch. When the time comes to mate her, follow the advice of her breeder and any other mentor you have and mate her to the best, most compatible dog you can find. My guess is you won't own him. Serving an "apprenticeship" in your breed lets people get to know you. It takes a fair bit of trust to sell a really good bitch into a future breeders home and going in cold you are unlikely to get what you want. My guess is a few years in, what you want is going to be fairly different to what you thought you did initially anyway. And stay here. There are a wealth of information and contacts to be made here and there are breeders here who joined as pet dog owners who have now produced their own litters.
  16. If the pup turns out to have retained testicles, then my view is that you are entitled to a refund or a replacement. Of course the cost of the pup are not the only costs involved with importing so who would pay those is less clear.
  17. I read somewhere a while back that packs of semi-wild dogs were creating serious safety issues in some parts of the USA. I'll have to try to dig that up.
  18. You are suggesting that some folk think there are no dog fighting rings. You'd be wrong. But one arrest in Victoria does not validate those suggesting that its happening just about everywhere, PARTICULARLY when police and the RSPCA have no evidence of thefts at all in those areas. One black helicopter at Bankstown airport doesn't put one over your house whereever you are in Australia does it? It's not all or nothing.
  19. Is there a place you could put her crate where she can see out the front window?
  20. Does she like the car? All my dogs like to go for a drive :)
  21. I don't hang anything on my trolley or Securapen. I use a k9 Cruiser bowl
  22. Fake posts with borrrowed photos and made up phone numbers abound Jed. Some people delight in creating havoc on social media. If the police continue to say "no thefts reported and no evidence of bait dogs" then I struggle to understnad why people so desperately WANT to believe these stories. The problem with people concluding their dogs have been stolen is that they stop looking for them. That is never a good idea.
  23. Santo: People are aware of the consequences of speeding and drink driving - and yet they do it. Do we punish responsible drivers by banning cars? Of course we don't. We penalise those who do the wrong thing.. So why are we penalising responsible dog owners when its pretty bloody obvious what kind of dog ownership creates dangerous dogs? There is a model for reducing dangerous dogs in society, its the Calgary model and it works when BSL has been proven to fail in this regard. If you're really interested in community safety Santo, I'm puzzled as to why you don't hitch your wagon to a solution that works.
  24. How will you go lifting a cart into and out of the car? I think a lightweight trolley is going to be easier and you're not pushing them that far. If you are only showing one dog, you should manage one trip most of the time. Otherwise take gazebo, dog and crate or trolley, set that up and go back for the rest.
  25. BSL seeks to eradicate ALL ownership of the breeds in question. That fact that responsible dog owners have dogs of this breed that pose no threat to anyone is irrelevant - and that's why its a crock. The answer to dealing with irresponsible dog owners is to target the owners, NOT their dogs.
