  1. Sent you a message. A friend had hers done at Pride Auto in Fyshwick. :)
  2. And totally unsuitable for "unnatural" situations like dog parks where pack hierarchy is far from stable. If this dog arcs up at the wrong dog, or steals the wrong dog's toy, its a recipe for a dog fight. "Training" a dog IMO is about teaching it cued behaviour and proofing that behaviour. "Training" a dog at most dog training places will not teach you about dealing with natural dog behaviours like resource guarding to any great degree. I honestly think this dog and owner would benefit from a visit from a decent trainer with experience in behavioural issues to assist with managing what is becoming a potentially challenging behaviour. The dog is an adolescent Cocker Spaniel - they can be quite hard headed in my experience and if given an inch, they'll take the mile and then some. They are NOT lap dogs in the traditional sense of the term. They are a traditional working breed and it best not be forgotten. This dog NEEDS a reliable recall and it needs to be kept out of situations where it feels the need to resource guard from others. Redirected aggression is one possible outcome that it sounds like the owner has already experienced. Accident or not, a bite from a Cocker Spaniel can do serious damage Andre, if you cannot control your dog offlead in the dog park to the extent that you can call him away from other dogs' toys , my advice is ONLY to use it when its empty.
  3. If she wants a sealed unit that doesn't need servicing, I'd go Andis. It's what I have and I'm very happy with them.
  4. I suspect its as much about that the trainer has no history with the dog as anything - the dog hasn't had the opportunity to exceed boundaries and ignore cues and still be rewarded for it. When a dog understands that it's only going to be rewarded for compliance, or precision and that there's no scope for a walk over, it will do the obvious thing - deliver.
  5. "Kid's fault?" "Dog's fault?" If you're engaging in this debate people you are missing the point entirely. Such incidents do not occur in the presence of EFFECTIVE ADULT SUPERVISION. All the speculation in the world as to the provocation for dog bites on children will not make up for the fact they simply shouldn't be allowed to happen. You don't blame animals and children for simply being themselves. Separate or supervise - it really is that simple.
  6. Sounds to me like what's missing from the equation is some self control from your dog. That can be taught. I also think a program of desensitising and improving YOUR value to your dog may also help. Exposing him on lead to dogs he cannot reach will build frustration and not a lot more IMO. Distance should be no barrier to getting the right trainer for your boy. I'd be going to see Steve.
  7. You've got some excellent brands there. Have a look at RC Medium Junior for a start. That's what my Whippets get.
  8. Another option is to switch to a puppy or junior kibble for a while.
  9. Just feed ordinary human grade beef, lamb or pork mince.
  10. Mince? If the objective is weight gain feed full fat mince. It's cheaper anyway.
  11. Two meals a day is still more. Porridge has little nutritional value for dogs. You need to increase the amount of fat in the diet for weight gain.
  12. Ludicrous. No research, all opinion and bugger all understanding of the issues - yep quality journalism there. The only conclusion with any merit I can make is that Miranda don't like dogs.
  13. All this discussion and debate about dog aggression and all I can think of is that poor family and how horrific it must have been. I'm officially getting old
  14. Tragic. What a disaster for that poor family. This from News.com.au
  15. Yep, the medium sanding belts are what I use. When they say only to do it 3-5 seconds at a time, that doesn't mean you have to stop for that session. You just lift the dremel off for a second on so and then go again. This stops the dog's nail from getting hot. I just switch to the next nail and then go back again.
  16. Lovely to hear from you Erny! Great to hear that Mandela is doing well. :)
  17. I assume you're being sarcastic? Even I wouldn't go so far as to condemn them all - that's saved for cyclists
  18. Maybe I need to clarify too. I'm talking about more than drop in visits. From Dogs or kids.
  19. My dislike probably stems from the fact that two unrestrained dogs lept off the back of a ute some years back to have a go at the dog I was walking and in the ensuring melee I broke my wrist. What don't I like? Here's my initial list: * Some tradies don't ask if they can bring their dogs to your place and have them on their trucks. They assume. That could leave my dogs going off their heads about it and pissing off my neighbours. * I do not like seeing dogs chained without shelter on the back of utes in all weather. They're not ornaments or image enhancers, they're living animals. * If left loose, they are not always supervised and I've yet to see a tradie pick up after his or her dog. I don't know these dogs vaccination status or where they've been. I don't want their shit in my front yard thanks. * It pisses me off to be passing places where tradies are working and have their dogs approach me and mine. That's a start
  20. Wonderful. NOT I wouldn't run my Whippets with little dogs in dog parks - and they LIVE with them!!
