  1. I think what a lot of people want is no Greyhound racing industry. There are viable, less drastic approaches to the issue of unwanted greyhounds than that IMO.
  2. If it's an inside dog and they are up for grooming costs, then the original oodle would be a good choice. I'd go for a Miniature Poodle. They probably wouldn't pay much for one from a decent breeder than they would for a pet shop oodle. And the pups are cute as!!
  3. This thread was only ever going to go one way wasn't it.
  4. Inside or outside dog? Will it attend training?
  5. Earplugs. ;) I appreciate that it can be difficult to ignore a screaming puppy (particulary with a child in the house) but your husband's cave in will create more screaming because the first time she did it, IT WORKED. She got attention. If you are confident she doesn't need to toilet, cover the crate, cover your ears and ignore her. Otherwise, she'll do it again.
  6. Congratulations Sway.. I met Hudson yesterday. :)
  7. They are sighthounds with a highly demanding coat. That alone, makes a lot of homes unsuitable. They can also be protective of home and hearth. Still, I'm sure no Afghan fancier wants to see a return to the 1970's when Afghans were 'popular' dogs.
  8. In my view? No. Salt water has bacteria too and I think it would dry their coats out too much. Don't clip them. You'll remove the water proofing that their coats have, and potentially compound the problem, in addition to making them prone to sunburn.
  9. I think Malaseb would be ideal for this purpose. :)
  10. Time for a good shampoo. My guess would be that the fresh water rinse may have seen some bacteria build up in the skin. You'll probably need a shampoo to remove it. Do you towel dry them after rinsing? IF you don't I'd recommend it.
  11. On a positive note, its nice to see the heat policy in action. :)
  12. Good news about the mass leaving the stomach AND that it wasn't a complete obstruction. And yes, it will be very interesting to see what comes out the other end. It will be one expensive dog poo You might want to bronze it.
  13. My personal best so far was to get the envelopes round the wrong way and to send the entries to myself. Picked up the envelope and thought "gee that Secretary receipts numbers quickly" I've got all my entries computerised. I need only fill out the show and the classes. Much easier. :) If Ozentries had Paypal, it would be the perfect system IMO.
  14. What breed are you looking to buy Weasels??? How exciting!!
  15. Sociopath. Budding serial killer which is no doubt why the police are so concerned. Scarey stuff for my home town.
  16. Any Lenards Chicken store will have carcasses and necks.
  17. Since when haven't naturally derived substances been called "chemicals". They're organic chemicals. Being naturally derived doesn't equate with being "safe" or without adverse effects. Some of the most deadly chemicals around occur in nature. I don't make a habit of dousing myself in pesticide (naturally occuring or not) on a regular basis and I'm not going to do it to my dogs unless there is a bloody good reason for doing so. Ticks are a bloody good reason IMO but fleas? Simply not an issue around here.
  18. What you could do is establish exactly what parasites you NEED to treat and what can be dealt with on an 'occurence' basis. My guys are treated for heartworm only during mosquito months. I would never give an injectable for this. They always get their internal parasite tablets every three months. They are given tick preventatives only when in a tick area (not often) They don't get flea treatments and I've only ever had to treat them for fleas twice in 14 years. The idea of giving a once a month all in one "just in case" treatment has never appealed to me. I prefer to tackle individual issues with specific treatments and only as required. Easy doesn't necessarily equal better in that regard. However, I would not be mucking about with half or less regular dosages.
  19. A new breed can be recognised in a few generations, there is other criteria also, such as breed clubs and forming a draft standard. Does anyone know the facts? Its all in the relevent ANKC regulations relating to breed recognition. They are available on the web but here's most of the relevant bits.
  20. Nat and James, Just be aware of the fact that the laundry is a heat sink.... coldest room in the house. Probably not so much of a problem now but in winter it can be very difficult for a dog to keep warm in there and indeed, pups don't have great temperature regulation so a bed well insulated from the floor and possibly a coat in winter will be required. Any reason his crate can't be in a living area? If you want him to use it frequently and not just at bed time, it may assist with accustoming him to use it.
  21. She is a white pied SBT. Mostly white. They can be very fine coated but lumps all over the body suggest more than a contact allergy. See what the vet says.
