  1. Yeah I getcha. And I'll just have to bow on this one. When I first started re-play my stomach turned. I didn't get more than about 15 - 30 seconds in when I had to shut it down. Wish I could just freeze that second.... the dog looks anything but friendly.
  2. I'm sorry. I'm not trying to duck out of this one. I tried to re-watch. I can't. Fair enough Erny. It's not pleasant. I was trying to see if what he did was justified TO HIM. Given that he's been told the dog has attacked and its coming on, I think would have been to him. 2.23 is before the shot by the way. I saw a threat display,
  3. No. That is DEFINITELY NOT what I saw. The dog that was shot was merely standing. It was already standing there when the officer walked in and up towards it. It barked at the officer. It stopped barking for a couple of seconds, looked away (around towards where the other dog was, over to the other side of the yard). There has to be different footage otherwise I am simply losing my marbles (shut-up ..... don't anyone dare agree with that, lol). As I mentioned, there were other things in this thread that made me wonder if there was different footage. Nope, what I saw had the dog approach.. and fast. AND it had sound... the owner telling the police officer that the two dogs were attacking his beagle and had attacked him. If you can bear it.. Minute 2.21 to 2.23 - IMO there's nothing ambivalent about the dog's behaviour.
  4. Shoot pets?? just 'cause they attacked a police dog..???? hardly justified. Pets don't chose their owners. And yet we've just had people say that any police dog that enters their premises is mincemeat. Are you saying the police shouldn't be able to use a dog as and where they deem necessary because there might be 'pets' on the premises or that they should just stand by and watch their dogs ripped up by resident dogs? Those dogs were secure inside the house until the owner bolted out the back door and the dogs followed. What are the police supposed to do?? Take their chances? It took OC spray and tasers to deal with those two dogs.
  5. What I saw (correction : what I remember seeing) is a dog who was standing there. It did bark at the officer a couple of times, paused and looked away. It was then the officer shot the dog. Maybe I got distracted from the footage (I didn't think so.). Maybe there is different footage (as there are other things people have talked about that I've gone "huh??" at. But I'm not going back to check. I don't want to see it again. I'll break it down for you Erny. The second before the shot is fired the dog is moving fast towards the officer. It is partially airborne (front legs off the ground) and its mouth is open. I watched it quite a few times. Wish I could freeze it.
  6. Using this chart I have one very angry little girl on my hands :) She regularly barks in an "angry" manner while looking "alert" when she is playing or being cheeky. ;) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk hahahaha yep, my dog gets stressed everytime i scratch him behind the ear. What a load of nonsense! Edit : oh and he relieves stress everytime he gets up from a sleep Clearly the subtleties of canine body language are lost on some. More's the pity. The better you can read it, particularly in unknown dogs, the safer you and your dog are. Seems to me that what this thread is about is a bunch of folk who suggest that because they have a dog of a particular breed, they can tell how all dogs of that breed act. And they can tell it better than anyone else. Maybe the police officer wasn't a bull breed owner.
  7. Has anyone actually LISTENED to what the cop is told as he walks into that back yard? DO that and then play the 2:20 to 2:24 minute part of the clip again. Given that he's been told that the dog has attacked the home owner, do you think its even a teeny bit possible that a dog running towards you and barking loudly might not be interpreted as "playing"? I was trying to freeze minute 2.23 without success The dog is coming on pretty fast.
  8. God knows, you've given them enough practice on each other. A dog killing Labrador.. I'm sure your heart would just swell with pride. Seriously, get your hand off it. No one's impressed. Any idiot can own a dog aggressive dog. Oh yeah, hysterically funny. And they wonder why cops shoot dogs... Based on this kind of sentiment a 'shoot on sight' policy appears justified.
  9. Hope this works. Bugger, it didn't.
  10. They are DOGS aren't they? Are you suggesting that bull breeds somehow display unique body language? If you are seeing taut, not relaxed muscle and a high degree of focus, then chances are you are seeing prey, not play behaviour.
  11. And does your pack go away, sniff around, pee on a few things and then come back to their prey intermittently even through the prey is moving and vocalising? If you mean will the dog discontinue play and do other things before going back to his prey? Yep. However by then I have usually stepped in. I don't enjoy seeing animals tormented. Here's the thing. Just because a dog is being "playful" doesn't mean that its intentions are benign. It takes two willing dogs to make a play session. Anything else and there are probably other motivations at work. As I have stated previously, most play behaviour is rehearsal for hunting or fighting. A play bow is a very stable position from which a dog can move quickly in almost any direction. But this study of wolf behaviour says it better: Upshot? If you think every time a dog is bowing, its inviting a game - think again. Maybe those of us with dogs with high prey drive are more used to seeing such behaviour outside the context of pure play.
  12. My Whippet does the same with mice. Oh he wants to "play" alright... but the mouse is the game, not a playmate.
  13. People who don't like kids - OK People who don't like dogs - yep that's OK too. People who don't like cats - yep I can understand. But people who don't like CHOCOLATE???? : ;)
  14. Hackles generally indicate a high state of arousal but read alone they don't tell you much. They certainly don't always signal aggression.
  15. I don't agree that the officer should have shot the dog. However, I can understand WHY he did. I also think any suggestion that the beagle is the agressor in the video is ludicrous. Greymate: I suspect most can control their dogs but I think some lack understanding about canine body language. This is not the first, nor it will be the last time that a dog owner suggests a dog is being playful when the dog is being anything but. Saw this play out at my dog club last week with a small dog threatened and cornered by two large dogs and none of the owners any the wiser until the fireworks started. Attitude of the owner of the two large dogs (who did absolutely NOTHING) - they're just playing. No mate, they weren't and I suspect you'll find that out the hard way.
  16. Maybe they asked the owner?? He was there after all.
  17. Anyone who thinks having kids guarantees them company in their old age is dreaming. If you want company in your old age, friends are what guarantees it. Plenty of aged care workers can tell you that elderly folk get 'warehoused' and don't get family visitors. I can also tell you about children that fleece their parents and leave them destitute. There are also plenty of estranged families, geographically seperated families and families devastated by loss. Romance and reality are two different things. If your family is close its cause for celebration but its by no means a universal thing.
  18. I'm beginning to wonder if some of us are watching the same video. I'd have described his demeanour as 'cautious'. Just cos you say he has horns and a tail Blackdogs doesn't make it so I'm afraid.
  19. A psychic once told me I'd had 16 kids in a past life.. yep, that's likely to remove much interest in more
  20. The only thing I can suggest is that you put the litter tray out of the dog's reach or if it's outside pick it up. Most dogs love it.
  21. Wuff if you feed a food that's got a reasonable protein content, doesn't make your older dog fat and you feed a joint supplement then I see little need to shift to a seniors formula. One exception might be for a dog showing signs of senility and a friend of mine swears Hills B/D made a huge difference to her senior dog in that department. I have heard others say similar things.
  22. Ah, there we are. I just KNEW we'd get here eventually. Oh yes, poor us with our barren wombs and our dislike of kiddies. Keep your pity. And try practicing some of that tolerance you'd like us to demonstrate. It actually possible to not be wild about kids but to tolerate most of them. I think that's a position many folk here have adopted. I feel little need to be patient or tolerant of poorly behaved children but I know better than to blame THEM for the way they behave. :)
