  1. Which dog obedience club to you belong to? If you are in a trialling class, you could ask your Instructor to give you a hand with this. You will need to become a member of Dogs ACT AND register your dog as an Associate (if he is not ANKC registered). Your dog must be desexed to be on the Associate Register. The shops in each club sell entry forms but you can generally download a suitable template.
  2. If they aren't having a go at the dogs on their team, I'd not consider it an issue. A strong pack dog doesn't necessarily welcome strangers to the pack. Fair enough, but I have also seen some dogs have a go at their own team members. There was a nasty blow out between two GSPs at a race last year. GSP's aint a sledding breed though - even if they do race in events.

  4. People focus would be an obvious test for companion dogs. Or perhaps just a general temperament test to eliminate 'poor' temperament. Not excessively shy, no people aggression, no dog aggression.
  5. Quite a few sighthounds won't course a plastic bag. And live game is out. I call lure coursing and indicator of function but by no means a definitive method of proving it. Coursing lures don't move like hares either.
  6. Tell her to have his teeth checked. Facial staining is due to a build up of bacteria in the wet area under the eyes - often due to a depressed immune system and frequently that's due to teeth issues. ETA: No way would I be putting vinegar (diluted or not) anywhere near a dog eyes.
  7. Toy: Poodle (Toy) Small: Poodle (Miniature) Medium: Whippet Large: Bracco Giant: Deerhound or Borzoi
  8. Caprilac do powdered whole goats milk. They don't have stockists on their website yet but you could always give them a call. :)
  9. I buy the Pauls 1L stuff from the dairy cabinet. It's about the same price as the longlife. I have been investigating goats milk powder - you can get it.
  10. A bigger health food store should have it. Coles and Woolies also carry it in a 'long-life' version generally.
  11. Yep, I use nappy bags too. :)
  12. Yep, sounds like your guests need some training too. Perhaps a few private lessons, focussing on what YOU want to work on, would be the go. I'm sure someone here can recommend a good trainer in your area.
  13. It will restrain him... and allow you to control his behaviour while you modify it. In the interim, your guests won't be wearing him. Can you explain a bit more what you mean by focussing on 'commands' rather than behaviour. If your dog will hold a 'sit' while guests arrive and while they pat him, that's his UNWANTED behaviour modified. If your dog REALLY knew "sit", "stay" and "walk on a loose lead" , all of the issues you describe in your first post would be under control. "No" doesn't tell your dog what you want. I really doubt your dog realises what he's done wrong. All he'll know is that you are unhappy with him. I think its generally easier to replace unwanted behaviour with desired behaviour than to simply tell them "no". I would suggest your dog needs more self control, a few more boundaries and a bit more respect for you and obedience training will help with all of that.
  14. 1. Put your dog on lead when guests arrive. That way you can control his behaviour and he can't reach guests. 2. Do you attend a regular dog training class? If not, I suggest you start - these are the kinds of behaviours a good pet dog training class (or private lessons) can focus on.
  15. Dontatella, I think a general program of training and a visit from a professional will help. It doesn't sound like she's got much confidence or many skills for dealing with life outside her home. Mind you, I've yet to meet a Pom that didn't mind a good bark.
  16. Dontatella, you could simply be dealing with poor temperament. "Hyperactive" dogs do exist. Poms are an active breed but they (as far as I know) are meant to have an off switch. Option B is that you simply aren't giving her enough exercise? How far/often is she walked. When was the last time she had a really good offlead blat? The dogs at your Mums have company 24/7 and access outside? FYI, Maltese are not Terriers. They are toy breed and there is no "Terrier" in their breed name. Your girl is a Spitz breed. She''ll have more in common with other spitz's than she does with terriers, toys or gundogs.
  17. The Daily Telegraph (UK)'s take on Crufts 2012 Interesting. So are the comments that follow the article. Usual positions... breeders pointing the finger at BYBs, and denying there's any problem.
  18. I'm sick of hearing it too. People who have no effing idea what they are doing, won't give an animal any sort of veterinary treatment and expect to make money from the process. It's heartbreaking. Precisely WTF that has to do with your endless banging on about what you see as wrong with the breeding of purebred dogs beats the shite out of me. Frankly I'm bored with your righteous indignation and you putting the put the boot in to anyone who appears to have different breeding goals to you. How you would seek to excuse the kind of "breeding practices" (and I use the term loosely) employed here when this person wasn't breeding purebred dogs AT ALL beats me. Seriously, build a bridge. It's like listening to a broken record.
  19. How about a CCrates securapen? Collapsed, I reckon you'd get an SP4 across the rear seat footwells.
  20. Suzanne Clothier talks about a canine behaviour she calls "obnoxious submission". The body language is submissive but the dog pushes boundaries and is just plain pushy. This sounds like that behaviour to me. It does sound somewhat like he's pushing boundaries with dogs he considers to be low threat. He'd not be given ANY opportunity for offleash play if he were mine. If he does it to a fear aggressive dog, my best guess is he won't take an aggressive response lying down. Yep, see a trainer. Sounds like he's giving you the middle finger.
  21. Had a friends young BC pup try Whippet herding a while back. FAIL Very challenging to herd an animal doing laps around you. To her credit she kept trying. Whippet switched to lounging in the end. :)
  22. Amateurs  They haven't even got any teefs showing. And no pointed toes!!
