"Everyone" clearly isn't a Whippet owner.... its a very common thing with Whippets. :) Although my Whippets prefer IN the bed to on it. ;)

There is a point at which a crate becomes a cage. It's less of an issue here but in North America they do see pet dogs who are largely confined to crates to control them as much as anything else. I've seen stories of rescue dogs confined in basements for years.

It won't slow you down much. There is only one Government pound in the ACT - Domestic Animal Services run it. Queanbeyan has one too.

If this was to be an outside only dog, I'd suggest another breed and not just from the warmth perspective. Whippets can be notorious fence jumpers and IMO, looking for companionship is a prime motivator. Once the habit is established it's almost impossible to extinguish. If sufficiently motivated, a 1.8m fence would't stop many of them. As others have said, they do need to be coated in cooler weather. MY dogs tend to wear coats below 10 degrees. Recall training is ESSENTIAL for Whippets (and all other dogs) but I'd never trust my Whippets not to chase if the prey is right there in their line of sight and running. A significant number of Whippets lose their lives to cars so I'd never trust the recall 100%. Fenced offlead running is the way to go.

My "problem" as you choose to put it, is not lack of comprehension or self importance but my frustration that one half arsed media article is prompting people to scream "help help the pitbull is being targetted by the Coroner" when no such thing has happened.

Quite simply, because those bowls are known to be communal and pet owners can choose whether or not to allow their dogs to drink from them (and I don't). If I'm buying a new product from a pet store, then I expect it to be new, not mouthed. If folk want to take their dogs into pet stores then this is one possible price to be paid for the privilege... you allow your dog to use it, it's yours.

I hope she actually does demand a closed court. I cant imagine the grief the family will go through if a bunch of dog people are in there thinking they are 'protecting the rights of dogs'. Beggars belief, doesnt it. Between the media and any "pro" or "anti" dog crusaders, best the circus be kept outside the Court for the sake of the family.

A dog toy with saliva on it? Yep, I'd expect you to pay for it. It's now "used". I don't allow strange dogs to mouth my dog's toys so I'd be less than impressed if I was sold one with saliva on it, especially if I had a partially vaccinated puppy. I'm not a fan of dogs in pet shops.

That's too difficult, Telida. Tabloids are the font of all knowledge, doncha know. It terrifies me that people might actually think what's written in the newspapers or goes on TV news shows is objective or factual. It frustrates the hell out of me when people won't educate themselves on an issue before freaking out about it and denigrating legal processes like coronials. Want to bet this will end up being a closed court because of it?

Who says there's a large focus on the breed of dog? Not the coroner, that's for sure. You're taking a media report as gospel and then drawing a whole bunch of conclusions from there. Media circuses exist to feed the public hysteria about issues - and this one's clearly working its magic on you. Fortunately, coroners are less easily influenced. :) Rather than whip yourselves into a frenzy of defensiveness. Agree entirely...especially turning it into a vilification of BH, thread. As opposed to a deification of Black Hawk thread. ;) Its a dog food, not a miracle cure all for all canine ills. Plenty of folk feed it and like it but you can say that about most dog foods. A lot of folk are wary of claims about products made by those who profit from their sale - it pays to keep that in mind. When you cross over to putting the boot into other dog foods, then you lose me. If its as good as folk say it is, then it should sell itself.

Vet, decent sized pet shops or producd stores - but it might pay to ring around. You can make it up into a spray or a rinse so it is useful stuff to have around. I would wait 24 hours. Generally takes a few days for a tick to engorge so don't panic. This is when owning a big dog hairdryer is useful.. you can use it to blow the coat apart and see every bit of skin.

If you are going to bath her, I would give her a Permoxin rinse. This will kill any tick on her.

If the pup is behaving aggressively towards your dog - its aggressive! All the rest is just "why". Act on the behaviour you see and avoid the dog. It's quite clear the owner won't act to manage the dog's behaviour up front so its down to you to keep your dog safe. I don't care about why dogs want a piece of mine - I just avoid them.

Yep, most of them on only a handful of dogs :laugh: Has anyone suggested for one minute that every individual dog in ANY of the targeted breeds is a walking congenital disaster area? Nope. And did the Pug that got BOB pass the vet check at Crufts. Yep, it did.

But they don't have to outcross to fix it. The pups they pet out because their muzzles are too long is where they start to reverse the trend of the last 150 years. I see them Jed. I see them at dog shows, at dog clubs and I read about them here. A dog that rasps to breathe at rest? That cannot gait around a ring on a mild day without audible breathing? There are plenty of purebred dog fanciers who look at some breeds and shake their heads. Look at how GSD discussion inevitably ends up here. I believe that we have the capacity to defend ourselves better and to shape change from within IF we act. But if we don't then I think you may be right for some breeds. Not among the purebred dog fancy it ain't. And it scares the living hell out of me. I see it as the Emperors New Clothes gone mad. And apology accepted. Maybe I'm still bruised from expressing a dissenting view on Ozshow. ;)

Was what the actual inquest was going to be about. And yes, the whole breed thing sells. Makes me honestly doubt the average intelligence of the Joe Blows out thee who gobble this crap up like it is Ambrosia... It will be about what EVERY inquest is about. Determining the factors leading to, and cause of death of the subject and potentially making recommendations about how further such deaths might be prevented. In the same way that Coroners made recommendations about pool fencing in child drowning cases for years.

Jed: That's a pretty low blow and frankly Jed, I expected better from you in this discussion. I just KNEW someone would personalise this and its precisely WHY I pointed out that I wasn't watching from the perspective of someone who couldn't be personally affected in the future. Frankly, I didn't expect it would be you. This situation calls for cool heads and further facts. Calls for "fighting" "boycotts" and the like isn't helping. As has been pointed out in other fora, we need to hear all sides of what occured before reaching conclusions about what has happened and what needs to be sorted, particularly in the context of the ANKC and what it might do. Before fighting folks, have a bloody good think about who and what you're fighting for. If you are fighting for the reason that you don't think that any breed standard today creates health issues for dogs then you really need to think about that. Are you fighting to protect these kinds of views? I call that a serious WTF statement. I'm thinking the dogs won't consider it damage. I leave it to others to judge the level of breeder self interest in the remainder of the statement. If you're fighting to stop Canine Controls acting to enforce amendments to the judging of breed standards, have a good thing about that too. And if you're fighting because you don't think anyone has the right to tell dog breeders how and what to breed then all I can say is stand by for some very rude shocks. We either find ways to ensure that the health of purebred dogs becomes a higher priority than maintaining breed and judging standards or we stand to have that done for us in far less gentle ways than the KC is using. Did the KC get it right? I honestly don't know. Lets wait and see shall we. In the meantime, it might pay to recognise that not everyone disagreeing with you does so from self interest or lacks empathy with those affected by these decisions. But my interests are firmly entrenched on the side of the DOGS. I don't and won't reconcile from that position, regardless of what's thrown at me. A dog that cannot be walked on a moderate day without risking heat stroke, a dog that suffers from permanent eye or ear irritation.. sorry but IMO its just plain wrong. And as for what Chinese empresses may have said... 10 inch fingernails are a thing of the past. Maybe dogs whose physical conformation is so extreme as to cause them health issues needs to be too.

To a dog it's not generally bullying and no amount of training will make an aggressive dog behave anything but aggressively in certain situations. Aggression is something you simply manage. Desensitisation is possible but its always lurking in the background. The fact that some owners don't bother to manage it is what keeps me out of public dog parks with a population greater than zero.

Who says the inquest is 'focussing on the breed of dog"?? The media? It's ONE factor be considered because coronials also look at how deaths may have been prevented. If the Coroner finds that the dog was not a banned breed and that council policies had no effect in preventing attacks by dangerous dogs, then that will be a GOOD thing. Seriously guys, don't circle the wagons BEFORE the Coroner's report.
