Just say the word. Foster home will be found :)

We all do. Wrong breed for that home.

A lot of folk freeze in situations like that.. especially situations they have not been trained for.

Laughing is better than crying. I've seen plenty of that over the years.

You could switch from supermarket sourced kibble high in indigestible fibre (that's what produces all that poo) and canned food to a premium kibble and raw meaty bones like chicken carcasses and wings. Canned food is mostly water - a pretty expensive way to hydrate your dog. ;) My guess is you'd notice the difference pretty quickly. Most of us have our preferred brands of food. I feed Royal Canin. A lot of folk like Advance which is cheaper but still good. An 8 year old shouldn't be slowing down too much? Is he overweight? Maybe a visit to the vet for a checkover might be a good idea.

Anyone know which Whippet got BIS?

I'm not going to offer an opinion beyond this: Breeding is emotionally HARD work. One of the hardest parts (from my observations of my friends) is homing puppies. If, in a breeder's opinion, euthanasia is a better option than an uncertain future (both in terms of home and health) then I can understand why they euthanase. The kinds of folk who want to "rescue" a pup with a physical disability AND have the stuff of a suitable life long home don't grow on trees. The only Boxer breeder I know that's homed a deaf white pup had it bounce back quickly enough. Would I PTS a deaf pup I bred. Yep. A dog that cannot be recalled will have an uncertain and limited future. But I'm sure none of this will stop folk here expressing strong views without a genuine understanding of all the issues to be considered in making such a decision. The more I learn about dog breeding, the more I take my hat off to those who do so responsibly. And between uninformed public condemnation and increased government regulation its no wonder so many are making the decision never to breed again.

I used Pets at Peace in Canberra also - and will again.

Natural Car Sickness Medication
Salukifan replied to mumof4girls's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Well there's your first thing to work on. Going in the car needs to be old hat to the pup. With my drooly vomity babies, it was mileage as much as anything that got them over it. I think there's also an anxiety component in a lot of dog's car sickness. What sort of car have you got and where does your pup travel in the car? -
Feel Like Slapping Your Forehead?
Salukifan replied to Fit for a King's topic in General Dog Discussion
Last time I bothered to read that standard it ALLOWED a variety of coat types. If people want to develop a new non-shedding breed and get it recognised, well more power to them. Cutsey names don't do them any favours though. But honestly, I just don't get the "why". What was "wrong" with the foundation breeds in the first place? Oh well, at least they'll have to stop rattling on about hybrid vigour once their stud book closes. :) -
The subject of the thread is about scammers though where the dog doesn't exist. If the person sees a pup, hands over money, and takes the pup in hand they can't be scammed in such a way. Nope, just in other ways. I don't care HOW you buy, its about doing your homework. And if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Responsible, reputable breeders sell interstate all the time. However if all anyone wants is your $$$, its a good sign that the deal is suss.

Substanial deposit and breeder ignoring questions.. tread carefully. What breed are we talikng about here?
-
I would be very wary of any small breed with a Husky but please source any pup you buy from a responsible registered breeder. How about a Lapphund?

I think the message from the loose dog to others is quite straightforward: I've seen it happen. I'd report it. You might save the dog's life.

Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
Salukifan replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You know what? You can see the best behaviourist around, follow their desensitisation programs to the letter and you'll STILL have a reactive dog. And all it needs is some moron yelling "don't worry he's friendly" as their offlead darling rushes towards you and you can be right back where you started. So this IS a thread that should be about more than "what will I do while my dog is being cured" because that simply will NEVER happen for some dogs. A decent dog club with its own grounds can be your saviour as can adopting the hours of a shift worker and lurking around public dog areas in the wee small hours. Obedience will wear out the mind but dogs still need a bloody good blat every now and again for their mental well being IMO. If you can cultivate the company of people whose dogs your dog will tolerate for social outings, so much the better. I rarely walk my dogs around my suburb straight after work. That seems to be the worst time and place for attracting the attention of dogs belonging to people who don't know their arses from their elbows when it comes to canine behaviour or courtesy to other dog owners. -
So many variables, and so much depends on the breeds and individual concerned. I have absolutely no doubt that some folk could both breed and show several breeds ethically and successfully and there are examples around to support that. Others struggle to accomplish that with one. I certainly don't lump everyone who aspires to do it into the "future puppy farmer" category. I do think it would be easier to do within a Group than across several Groups.

Another Dog Charged Us On Our Walk.. Getting Sick Of It!
Salukifan replied to Michelleva's topic in General Dog Discussion
My dogs have been monstered by a large dog under the "control" of a child. I ended up grabbing the lead and stringing the dog up to prevent it from taking chunks out of mine. Dad was not impressed. He was even less impressed when he snatched the lead from me and his dog bit him.. transferred aggression's a bitch. :) -
That's the first thing I thought as well, Pers. Staggers syndrome from mouldy food. Not hard to imagine in this wet weather we've had all year. Yep, mouldy hay was my first thought. Their keepers must be devastated.

Must Have Grooming Products For Long Haired Dogs
Salukifan replied to a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Donatella, the ONLY people I'd be listening to about grooming products for your Pom are Pom folk. Or maybe some of the Spitz folk but even spitz coat varies between breeds. I have never been a fan of Aloveen. I think its over priced and damned ordinary - but folk love it. To each their own. You could do a lot worse than Plush Puppy - they should have recommendations for Poms on their website. -
I would advocate complete rest until you see the vet.

Le Suit Tahari Yep and Kasper too.
