Yes Steve;Thats why i'm still looking for a dog that i am not allergic to.Bichon Frise are one breed considered more suited to some people with allergies. With my allergies i can better tolerate smooth coated breeds with low doggy odour. Whippet

Do a straw poll of men and what they think of poodles Dee Lee - I'm not pulling this stuff out of thin air. If you get more than 30% who fail to mention the words "girly" or "pouffy" in their description, then I'll eat my grooming table. Want me to lay you odds the OP's friend's husband has never met a well trained, well bred poodle???

Pet Mince From The Supermarket
Salukifan replied to erinonthefarm's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I thought it was abnormally red! oh and the smell was not very good. How can they say it is "choice meat" It's called advertising. Cost cutting on your dog's diet with products like this is false economy IMO. Chicken wings and necks are cheaper than most pet mince and a whole lot better for your dog. There are better ways of feeding a cheaper diet than this one. -
I think the Bandog could more accurately be described at this point in time as a "type", much like the Bull Arab. Without a breed registry and maintenance of pedigrees, anyone with a few molossars and a few bullbreeds can churn out pups and label them in this manner. And importantly in Qld, without proof of parentage, any big crossbred dog of a certain type will be in the firing line for BSL.. although in this case it's not those laws that are being applied.

Does she need the dog to be non-shedding? What is she looking for in a dog?
-
Are we talking about F1 crosses or the "mulit-generation" version ?? The overwhelming majority of F! Lab/poodle crosses DO SHED!!!!!!! They can also suffer from a range of inherited health conditions like hip dysplasia and eye issues. If she wants to buy from a puppy farm then she's certainly looking in the right region of Australia. But honestly, save your breath. Her husband's fear that proximity to a poodle will drain him of testosterone will mean they'll buy the pup.

You'd be assuming wrong with some breeds, particularly those bred for a protection function. Indeed, for some breeds "friendliess" would be a fault. A dog described in its breed standard for as "aloof with strangers" could be penalised for wagging its tail at a judge!!! Quite a few breeds are indifferent to strangers. The extended breed standard for Whippets says: Whippets should not be dog aggressive and its not ususual to see a human "post" with a bunch of various people's dogs near a ring entrance as everyone is pitching in to help exhibit some of the larger show strings. I know that there are breeds I'm happy to belt into someone's gazebo to get out of a crate and into a ring for RUBOB etc and others I'd never consider doing that with. EVERY show dog should be tolerant of being handled with its handler with it. I'd make so such assumptions about them beyond that and certainly no assumptions that every breed will tolerate other dogs (again a fault with some). Dont forget also that you have bitches in season and entire males at most shows - usually that can produce some fireworks. My recommendation for any DOLer interested in attending show would be to hook up with a DOLer who's exhibiting and can show them around. As I said in my first post in this thread, asking permission before patting a dog at a show is the way to go and I know I often get my dogs out of their crate if people ask about them. They love a good pat!!

I'm not offended, I'm bemused. I don't know which Group areas you've been visiting but Hounds don't generally spend their days at shows snapping and snarling at passing dogs Most of the time they're dozing! And since when has a display of aggression in a crate meant that: * the dog necessarily felt "threatened" * that the dog would necessarily bite? All I can say is that it appears that some folk have a somewhat misguided view of the degree to which temperament VARIES between purebred dogs. If you have a breed with a temperament that is not dog tolerant, or is protective of territory or property then you'd expect a far less tolerant approach to passing dogs. Show dogs are as varied in their temperament as those who exhibit them. The differences between breeds is not simply cosmetic. There's a lesson that needs to be pounded into the heads of puppy buyers - and it ONLY tends to be taught by responsible breeders.

Introducing Staffy Pup To Aggressive Chihuahua
Salukifan replied to Summerside's topic in Puppy Chat
Yep, don't. Your pup does NOT need that experience and the Chi doesn't need the aggravation. It also has the potential to go very badly wrong. -
I'd rather EVERYONE know who is judging that a just handful of show committee members and their friends. ;) Why on earth would you want to spend money and travel to find you've landed a judge who clearly doesn't like the type of dog you exhibit.

Kids Creche At Shows To Help Boost Entry Numbers
Salukifan replied to just1more's topic in General Dog Discussion
I watched over a child for a while last weekend - and we both survived  Think I'm going to have to add some textas and a colouring book to the grooming box though - kids can only do so much with a catalogue and a couple of pens. ;) -
Royal Shows that are benched shows, on the other hand, have the dogs displayed for the public as part of the conditions of entry and exhibitors need to keep their company manners on display at all times as well. "A polite, if you come back after judging, I'd be happy to let you meet my dog" or even "sorry but he's not fond of strangers" sure beats snarling like a biatch. :)

Kids Creche At Shows To Help Boost Entry Numbers
Salukifan replied to just1more's topic in General Dog Discussion
I never said it should be up to the committee - I suggested a sub-contractor/private operator to offer the service to first come first served at the bigger grounds on particular days! My response wasn't directed at you, or anyone in particular SW. :) -
Get a lawyer. Your dog doesn't have to have "done" anything if his breeding is the reason for the declaration.
-
Only wrong if you don't ask first. My dogs enjoy the attention but just as they are due in the ring is not the time. However, mine are smooth coated and don't have "hairstyles" that can be mussed up. Dogs and exhibitors are different. Don't generalise either the good or the bad - take each as they come.

Kids Creche At Shows To Help Boost Entry Numbers
Salukifan replied to just1more's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think its a good idea BUT why impose another job on show Committees to organise it?? Why not have PARENTS organise a bit of collective child minding amongst themselves?? One extra gazebo for the kids, a bit of organising for activities and some volunteers from different groups and voila - you have it. It could be sorted out in the show threads here. Only rule I'd have is that if you're not part of the child minding taskforce, your kids don't get to participate. -
Hi Guys, I'm New! Just A Couple Of Questions
Salukifan replied to bigbadwolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
What breed are you after? Do you have any intentions of showing your pup? If you do, you need to choose carefully and I'd be seeking recommendations. -
What's Your 10 Second Info Grab?

Whippet - poor man's greyhound. Bred by English coal miners to put a bunny in the cooking pot and to race for prize money on Sundays" A sprinter, very little body fat and need to be inside dogs" No, not skinny - how many fat athletes do you see? -
Small Animal Markets-bybs - Reg Breeders

Partially vaccinated or completely unvaccinated pups being handled by members of the public and no doubt with other adult dogs on site on the day. Best recipe for a parvo outbreak I could come up with. Talk about a high risk environment. Nice work council. If rangers turned up to check every pup for sale for a microchip, things might be interesting though. ;) -
Got Friday and Sunday numbers in the mail yesterday.

Megan: Temperament depends on breed. Breeds vary widely in both triggers to aggression and in bite inhibition. That the general public know no better is one of the great frustrations and challenges to dog exhibitors in show with a large public attendance. I agree that no dog exhibited should be known to be HA but you get a wide variety of temperaments. It is totally the owners responsiblility to manage their dog to prevent incidents and I'm sure most of us can describe a few "interesting" incidents with kids. However NO child can be held to the same standards of behaviour as an adult - they are impulsive and tend to generalise from their family dogs to others. As adults the responsibility for protection of dogs from kids and vice versa falls entirely to us. Apportioning blame to the dog or the child here is unfair.

Without papers anyone's guess can be as good as another's BUT I think it strays into danger with bull breed mixes in BSL states and when people start attributing characteristics to the dog in question and trying to train it based on breed. I do have a chuckle at the number of 'Deerhound" crosses that are simply wire haired poodle mixes and when the rare breeds get trotted out into mixes. Your average pound bitser in this country is probably a mix of the most commonly owned dogs. Funny how in the USA on the rescue shows they get lots of lab and chow mixes when we get bull breed and working mixes - and the little fluffies of course. As for supposed 'purebreds' - its really hard to be definitive. A dog can look like a dead ringer and still be a mix.

I doubt Shezz will have to. IMO it's the only responsible course of action for the dog's owner in these circumstances. It would break my heart but it's what I'd do.

I don't think an ongoing discussion of this event is particularly wise for a range of reasons: * I imagine SACA will be investigating * There may be civil action resulting from it. * We have only one side of the story (regardless of how accurate it is) There are no winners in situations like this. We have a scarred and traumatised child, a horrified and outraged parent and, my guess is a horrified owner and a soon to be PTS dog. I think a little empathy wouldn't be wasted on the owner of the dog - imagine yourself faced with the decision that person is going to have to make. I imagine they will never exhibit any dog again. Would you? And lets not kid ourselves that the owner would have known that the dog would do this. Any dog large enough to inflict injury is "capable of such an attack". And in all likelihood, unless the child was in the dog's face very quickly, the dog DID give a warning - that no one saw. As I said, no winners. My advice would be to wrap this thread up. If I were your solicitor Shezz, I'd be counselling you to keep all comments about the incident to yourself. Trial by Facebook and DOL are neither fair nor wise.
