7 Week Old Cane Corso At The Off Leash Park :(
Salukifan replied to RiverStar-Aura's topic in General Dog Discussion
And I'd argue that a little less judging and a little more education will do more to help this pup and its owner - or you or any other owner. For all anyone here knows that pup is a cossetted and much loved pet. It's age and it's owners lack of understanding of dog parks don't give any of us the information to decide otherwise. However it seems to me that the pups breed may be leading some posters to make assumptions about the owner. More's the pity. If you want to give someone a serve, how about the owner of the dog that allowed it to bully the pup? Dog parks COULD be great places to socialise young dogs if it weren't for owners like that. -

Well spare a thought for an even more novice dog owner. The pup isn't living on a chain 24/7 being ignored to "make it a better guard dog". How people have made the jump to write this owner off as an uncaring idiot defies my understanding. Ignorance and stupidity are two different things. This guy bought a pup at an age it's legal to sell them and was attempting (albeit not well) to "socialise" it. Isn't that what the general public think dog parks are for? An offer for some one on one time with a reliable adult dog and direction to a decent dog training club or provider might be all the information this guy needs to get this done right. -

Why? The pup would have been fully weaned for weeks. Many bitches would be spending little time with pups of that age. The owner was trying to socialize the pup in the same manner many novice owners adopt. Calling him a moron is unfair. Seems to me some friendly advice was what was called for. -
Anyone who acts on "legal advice" given over the Internet is a damn fool IMO. Pheebs tell the owner to go and see a solicitor and to take her boarding contract in for review while she's at it. There is no way in Hell a boarding kennel owner "owns" the dogs under their care. What they have is a lien over the dogs until payment is made. Seriously tell the owner to spend the money for some qualified legal advice.

Sorry but I don't agree that food theft or resource guarding equals dominance. Even lower members of a pack will guard grab and resources. Resource guarding is hard wired behaviour and attempting to "be the leader" and take the resource can sometimes result in a dog biting. Growling is a warning - this is a GOOD thing. Heed the warning. My advice is to crate Dusty whenever she or any member of your family is eating. Then get some decent professional help. I doubt you'll cure her of it but you will get lots of management strategies. The first one I'd be introducing is that your kids don't eat outside unless Dusty is secure elsewhere.

Different Coloured Eye Reflections?

My dogs mostly have green reflections but Howie's are bright blue. Different eye shape maybe?? -
5.1/2 Week Old Female Staffy Pups Stolen From Pet Shop
Salukifan replied to Marion 01's topic in General Dog Discussion
5 weeks is pretty standard for shipping pups into stores. They are cuter longer don't ya know. -
It all comes down to the terms of the agreement. Ellz is right - get it all in writing. Where the bitch will live, who pays for what (show entries, vets fees, food etc), how many litters/pups breeder gets, a maximum breeding age, who choses sires, and most importantly what happens if the bitch does not whelp any pups. Will the dog be co-owned or owned outright by you? Personally, if you are taking on a bitch and the breeder will get her back for a litter OR get a pup back, IMO you shouldn't have to pay anything for her.

What's she eating? I'd be trying a diet free from gluten.

Congratulations on the BIS with the Standard Poodle - thought you were going to have to pry the rosette out of his? mouth for a while there. Grounds were great, catering was also great. Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. :) Now if next year they had a little golf cart to take gear from the car park to ringside.. -
What To Do When Your Dog Is Scared At The Park?
Salukifan replied to Bear&Duke's topic in General Dog Discussion
This might work well for an uncertain dog Aklhe but OP's pup was crying in fear and trying to get away. Forcing the pup to put up with the attention of the other dog would be a recipe for provoking a fear aggressive response IMO. With flight removed as an option, all the dog has left is to shut down or respond aggressively in an attempt to get the other dog to back off. Weasels said: Does counter-conditioning change the emotional response or simply the behaviour the animal displays eg. fearful dog looks to owner rather than crying or trying to escape... or responding aggressively??? I'm not an expert but I'd say its expanding the dog's experiences (via controlled socialisaton) that changes the emotional response to situations??? -

Training doesn't change temperament. Socialisation may increase the level of comfort the dog has in certain situations but no training method will make a dog less fearful. -

Sadly, you often have to resort to being rude to get any kind of response. Then you get the affronted "he's only being friendly" to which my next line is "lady, he's 5 times the size of my pup and he's scaring the shit out of him". Final response will be something rude about "small dog owners".. but you learn to live with it. :) I don't give a toss about what anyone says about picking your pup up. I'd never get on the ground as if it turns ugly, your face is where the other dog can bite it. If a dog jumps when I pick my dog up, it will wear my hip or my boot. I've had one too many vet bills to muck around with these kinds of situations. -

I know what I'd have done. Picked up my pup and told the Weim's owner to come and get their effing dog NOW. :) -
Depends on the breed, but generally I prefer males.

No rain forecast now :)
-
Agree on the Bouvier - would add the Briard to the list. Question though - do you want a dog that LOOKS the business or one that is prepared to BE the business when it comes to protection. A dog with protective instincts comes with an added level of responsibility for the owners.

Not playing. Favourites are the ones I own. Least favourites will only offend some folk so what's the point? Who cares what I dislike
-
Congratulations!!

Got my numbers last week! Forecasts can change - I'm not going to worry about rain yet.

 Apart from coat type (sometimes) I don't think there's often much similar about them. Usually very different heads and body type - and often temperament too. Mind you, I'm standing on the inside looking out. What most oodles look like to me is that they need a good groom. You want a scruffy, fluffy wool coated breed - all I can think of it the ear, mouth, feet and bum issues that go with not removing coat for hygiene reasons. Sheesh I can see the mats forming on PUPS at my dog club because long coat isn't being properly groomed. Ask any poodle person - long coat is HARD WORK.
