  1. If he had to wear the collar, I'd have recommended he be crated in it. No walking into things then. You can also get bitter tasting sprays that can be used to deter licking.
  2. Let's see. An older breed, fairly large in size and not one to stand back from a stoush. I've been told I can be a bit intimidating but those who know me well think I'm quite a softie. I'll probably have similar wrinkles eventually. :D
  3. Very pleased to hear it. Makes you want to slap the emergency vet though.
  4. This dog doesn't have a disease. He has a collapsed trachea that's restricting his ability to breathe. The prospects of surgical intervention on a 14 year old are low. What will happen at the end of his period of being sick I expect is that he'll pass away. I take my pets to the vet at the first sign of illness or distress and if medication isn't working I take them back. Your decision but I would never forgive myself if my dog died during the night from lack of air. What he needs to make him more comfortable is more oxygen. I hope he makes it through but I don't expect you're going to hear anything very positive tomorrow.
  5. If this were my boy, he'd not be having to make it through another night sorry. What the emergency vet CAN do is ease his suffering tonight. No dog should have to struggle to breathe until tomorrow. Give the poor little guy his wings.
  6. If it makes you feel any better, the posters on the rescue forum are pussy cats compared with the BSL forum (another I don't visit) I recall suggesting in my early days here that perhaps, if APBT fanciers wanted the support of the wider dog owning public, they might like to address the levels of dog aggression in their preferred breed. I ended up in the middle of something that looked like this: I am older and wiser now....
  7. Seriously, if you've got time to put oil on the poo, why not simply remove it?? Frequent cleaning up and acknowledgement that this is something quite a few pups do (and grow out of) is all that's required.
  8. With respect, a little more roaming might reduce some of the hot house mentality of the rescue forum. You know as well as I do that there are rescue forum folk that never post anywhere else - perhaps in part because they feel that they don't get the deference they get in rescue??? I think some rescuers would benefit from spending time in the health and training forums.. and the puppy one. That's where some of the owners of future surrenders start their careers here.
  9. Oh honey you so are - and you shouldn't be offended by it. You are a respected rescuer and foster carer. You can comment and ask questions and get responses because to a rescuer you are "one of us". Being part of the "in crowd" doesn't have to be a bad thing - but it colours how you see the world. Don't for a moment think that there aren't other "in groups" around that folk can be members of and be similarly affected. ANKC registered breeders is another here. Hell, they have a closed forum!!
  10. Then maybe a little more education and a little less siege mentality is called for. Christ knows, registered breeders and trainers spend half their lives on this forum handing out free advice to BYB pup and pet shop puppy buyers - for the benefit of the dogs. A closed ranks, delete the thread and repel all boarders approach in the rescue forum doesn't educate anyone. Frankly some of the homing decisions I've seen foisted on novice dog owners who are doing precisely what rescuers want them to do (adopt) appall me.
  11. Dogmad: Dogmad, you know I have no difficulties with your practices but sadly the quote above is used by some rescue folk to justify just about anything. Overcrowding, warehousing in kennels, failure to temperament test, failure to quarantine, revolving door rescue, rehoming dogs with aggression histories, rehoming undesexed.. placing challenging dogs with novice foster carers.. deaths and injury to rescue dogs by dog attack in foster homes.. you name it. And the more responsible rescuers know it. That's why the word "responsible" needs a bigger work out, in breeding, in rescue, in ownership. Because if any of us are not doing what we're doing responsibly then any statement about being "all for the dogs" is a total crock. And those NOT doing it responsibly shouldn't get to hide behind the skirts of those who do or to justify what they do in terms of the best interests of the dogs. There ARE worse fates for a dog than a humane death and frankly a small minority of rescuers need to cowboy up and face it. And frankly the "circle the wagons' and ignore the concerns of others approach some adopt means it ain't going to happen.
  12. That's the problem with snobbery - if you're "in" with those who consider themselves better than others, you don't experience it.
  13. And those rescuers are massively in the minority, but their unethical practices make them appear larger than they actually are. It would be cheering to see some divisions within rescue give the same acknowledgement to ANKC breeders Schmoo. There are two young dogs of my chosen breed who were been kept in kennels for months and bounced through a number of adoptive homes by a high profile rescue when offers of knowledgeable breed foster homes have were rejected. My sad conclusion is that these dogs will be pretty much unhomeable soon and its a tragedy for both the dogs and the failed adoptees who bought into the "adopt a rescue and safe a life" message and have been burned. In some circles, those homes will be blamed for the failure - its all been in the rescue forum before. So I stay away and despair because for some rescues the "anything is better than death" approach they take to saving dogs is a disaster for all concerned. Bet they still count the bounced homes in their successful rehoming statistics though.
  14. I have the Rescue Forum blocked. I learned the hard way that any questions or concerns with the practices of some of those who use it made you "anti-rescue" and these days I confine my activities to supporting individual dogs of the breeds I love. That forum supports the activities of both rescue organisations I consider to be the benchmark of practices and others, frankly that deserve a good serve. But eventually I learned to shut up. Those who don the "I rescue therefore I can do no wrong" halos I leave to continue their irresponsible ways these days. Frankly Thundercat, I hope in future you subscribe to the "whatever happens in rescue [forum] stays in rescue and save these posts for there. Yet another highly emotive thread started by you this week.. time for a break?? If it distresses you that much either volunteer to help, open your wallet or just don't look.
  15. I think Espinay needs it over in the FIFO worker thread first.
  16. Doesn't matter how many ways you present a stick on this forum. There will always be some who grab the wrong end, impale themselves and blame you for it. I started this thread to express my frustration at being written off as sone kind of social climber because I choose to own pedigreed dogs. How that has been interpreted as an indictment of working dog breeders or indeed of any breeder here beats me. I give up
  17. Yikes - that's $11 a kg My Whippets get Royal Canin Medium Junior - $115 for a 15kg bag at one of the big pet store. It's a popular choice with Whippet folk. It's $7.6 per kg so nearly 1/3 cheaper that that!! Supercoat puppy may be around $3 per kg but my guess is you probably have to feed about twice the amount I do and frankly if your dog looks like a toast rack on it, how is that ANY kind of value???
  18. Point taken. But I REFUSE to buy a pup that's been desexed already. It may be in the best interests of dog welfare generally but in my view it is NOT in the best interests of the individual dogs

    Whippet

Yes, it varies between individuals. Pups would be interested in chasing things that move. Yes, training would help - for both children and pup. if not supervised, I'd expect some chasing and nipping if the kids ran - but you know what? I'd expect that from almost any pup. I think with supervision and some education of the children, Whippets make excellent family pets. They don't tend to knock kids around as much as some of the more "traditional" family breeds can do as youngters. I know quite a few Whippet owners with young kids (including Pav Lova) and it can certainly work well given a bit of effort. I think they are a largely undiscovered gem in the family pet context. Expect the pup and children to want to share a bed though!!!

    Whippet

Sorry, didn't spot this. I have Poodles and Whippets. No, I don't notice dog hair after they've slept but I have hard floors and I do notice a little hair on those. They are close coated but they shed a little. I gather it's pretty low compared to JRTs though. They are pretty different temperament wise to the poodles - less velcro, more independent but I am not the only person I know with the two breeds and it's not a huge leap between them - both are lovely companions albeit the Whippet prey drive and speed offlead need more management.
  21. MTS OP: Now: And the story changes again. And you wonder why people get frustrated with you.
  22. :banghead: You've been given the advice you need to help this dog. You're now coming up with excuses as to why you can't act on it. Don't try and foist responsibility for a skinny Whippet that's on a crap diet anywhere but where it belongs. Your sister. She's feeding her cut price Whippet a cut price diet and the poor animal is paying for it. If she won't change the dog's diet then for pity's sake stop bleating about it here. It's distressing to read about a breed I love in this situation. The dog is willing to eat Goodos. Give her more effing Goodos if that's all she wants. Keep her warm and coated and save your attitude for your sister.
  23. So in the first post you said the dog had seen a vet. Now you say she hasn't????? YOU KNOW WHAT THE DOG NEEDS. Any further posts by you in this thread will either be reasking the same questions or giving reasons why you can't act on the advice given. Sayonara MTS - I simply give up.
  24. So why post? Beats me. In the entire history of MTS's time on DOL, I've yet to see her accept and act on advice. *reaches for blood pressure tablets*
  25. If Misty never saw a vet, how was she diagnosed with Gastro??? Oh *forehead slap* -is this YOUR diagnosis. If the dog is eating goodos, SHE's EATING. Maybe she prefers goodos to what else is on offer - can't blame her really. Isn't this dog on a regular worming program? You don't just toss one down their throat when they look skinny. Seriously, your stories change every time you post. Get the dog checked out and stop feeding her crap. It's not rocket science. You've been receiving nutritional advice on this forum for over 12 months - surely you have some idea by now. If there wasn't a sick Whippet involved, I'd not be responding to you at all. Feeding canned food is feeding expensive water - chicken wings would be cheaper by the kilo than that. Most of what your sister is feeding is ending up in the poo shovel. You don't need to be a millionaire to feed a dog well. Why can't you share the costs of some Black Hawk?? Maybe you should simply let your mum feed her - she's had good success putting fat on your other dogs.
