Why? There are plenty of grain free kibbles on offer. Most have protein levels that are through the roof. You might not consider that to be an issue but I do. Fad surfing in canine nutrition is all fine and dandy - but your lack of success in feeding your dog a diet she does well on should be an indicator to you to rethink some of these issues. Its been said time and again that the best diet for your dog is the what it does best on. Palatability is an important part of that.

A dog fed food it enjoys doesn't turn it's nose up. Why on earth you won't try a a few more brands to find something the dog likes beats the bejesus out of me. I've done this and the ONLY brand my Whippet would eat with gusto was RC. And believe me, I tried quite a few. Frankly I was prepared to let him find one he liked than rather than watch him turn into a toast rack because I wanted to be "tough". I don't care if the kibble is made from humanely harvested organically grown rabbits and has no grains - if the dog doesn't like it, it's a poor choice. Is it so hard to try a few sample or small packs (grains or not) and feed the dog something she LIKES??? I give up.

You prefer to feed it? Okaaay. Have you actually had Missy try it yet? What you think it "sounds like" and how your dog does on it might be a tad different you know. Your choice. I find it hard to comprehend why you are complaining about the cost of chicken frames if you're prepared to pay that for kibble. Its VERY expensive. The reason I suggested Royal Canin is because I use it on the basis of advice from experienced Whippet people and my dogs thrive on it. So do a lot of sighthounds. Your dog needs a balanced quality diet. She is still growing. All this faffing around is not in her interests. Get her onto something she likes, and that she does well on, whatever the brand and leave it well alone. Your current version of a raw diet is unlikely to be balanced.

Yeesh. The dog threw up. Once. They do that sometimes. Now a complete change of diet is required? Get real. Although I think the diet she's on now is hardly ideal. How about this for an idea MTS. Stop dicking about with this dog's food, find a decent high quality kibble she LIKES (try Royal Canin Medium Junior - its cheaper than that other stuff you're thinking of), feed her chicken wings every few days and leave her diet the hell alone.* *I fully expect that this advice will go the way of all dietary advice given to MTS about her dogs over the last 12 months - nowhere.

You know, I'd almost be prepared to have stab at the name of this breeder. This sounds like way more than bad luck IMO. You don't "accidentally" home 7 week old pups.

Whippet Won't Gain Weight
Salukifan replied to mumtoshelley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
People are relying on what MumtoShelley is telling them. And what she's saying (as usual) changes constantly. She's either spinning a yarn of monumental proportions or one of the best trolls this place has ever seen. Frankly I have no idea which. -
Whippet Won't Gain Weight
Salukifan replied to mumtoshelley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Why would your sister know it was you? Doesn't she have neighbours?? Either grow a set and report her or go round there and take the bloody dog to the vet yourself. Wringing your hands here isn't helping the dog and frankly I'm fed up with your excuses. Not that I expected anything else of course. You never change. If you genuinely give a damn get off the computer and DO SOMETHING. -
I think you've hit the nail on the head there Haredown. :) I have one coat from the above mentioned on it's way. I've no doubt at all I'll be ordering more too. I love the death looks and the "over it" looks the Whippet modeling the coats has in the pics on her Ebay shop ads!

How Important Is A Good Pair Of Scissors
Salukifan replied to giraffez's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You really need to feel the scissor in your hand to know what will work for you and what won't. I like bent shanks and longer blades - other folk will want something els. I have some very nice Heritage scissors from the USA but I think they'd be well above $50 these days. A good pair lasts, can be sharpened and genuinely makes scissoring less tiring on the hands. Maybe not so important for we pet groomers but the pros are scissoring for hours every day. -
I have some Wolf's Den ones too. The back zip style is great for keeping chests warm and keeping coats on those Whippets that love to undo velcro. Oh and I also have some very nice ones Pav Lova made for the boys. I think I might have a bit of an "issue" with collecting Whippet coats.... and collars..

Personally I don't think Weatherbettas are a good fit on Whippets at all. MTS's photo of Missy illustrates why - you have to do them up tight in the front to get a snug neck and chest fit on a slim whippet neck and then they lack length and depth to keep a whippet warm IMO. The fabric is quite stiff also. I'd not buy one for a Whippet and I'd certainly not leave one on a Whippet all day. MTS I think Missy's reluctance to move would stem from how tightly the coat is done up - you're restricted her shoulder movement a fair bit. If you walked her in it, I think it would rub her coat off on the shoulders. However, if you loosen it off, my guess is the neck will gape. They really aren't cut for Whippet shape. I buy a lot of coats from This Sighthound Coat Maker on Ebay in the UK and have never had a dud. Even with the exchange rate and postage they are good value. I have the sherpa ones (with and without snood) the polar fleece ones with snood and the sherpa lined water proof one with cross straps. I'm a big fan of the crazy sheep pattern. :) Whippets are a very distinct shape. Any coat not made to fit that shape is probably not going to be ideal for one. Oh, and I also have Whippet wear ones - really like them but they are not cheap. They are also heavily reliant on you getting your dog's measurements exactly right. I find the UK Seller's coats fit really well provided you get the right length.

1. What breed of dog? 2. How much time is the pup spending in the crate? 3. Is he having 'accidents' in there?

Eye shape, ingrown eyelashes, tear duct issues... lots of potential causes. I'd recommend a vet visit.

Need Advice About Potentially Giving A Home To A Rescue
Salukifan replied to Isabel964's topic in General Dog Discussion
Who knows? It could be the dog's temperament to be shy, it could be overwhelmed in the shelter or the dog could be completely unsocialised and fearful of strangers for life. No amount of effort and patience is going to turn an unsocialised or timid dog into a 'guard dog'. If all she wants is a dog that will bark its head off when strangers come, she has some chance but it's not a sure thing. Personally I don't recommend that anyone who's not good at reading dog behaviour adopt a dog from a shelter. A rescue dog in foster care that's been temperament tested by someone who knows what they're doing is a much better bet. She also needs to know what this dog is like with other dogs. There's an older dog's quality of life at risk here. -
Ask the question in the Dog Breeds 101 Weim thread or in the thread in the Breed Sub-Forum. I'm sure the Weim folk will answer.

Mixing dogs in kennels. Hmmmn Kennel cough got that name for a REASON

Met one of those yet? Don't hold your breath. And as for the good old fashioned pet show? Why on earth would the ANKC want to organise one. They already allow neuters to compete and frankly my guess is they've got enough battles on their hands protecting the interests of PAYING members - and they include owners of crossbred Associate dogs. Little old ladies and 15 year old boys can be seen in the ring at ANKC dog shows on any weekend you choose.

I wonder if the dogs were barkers.

Incidence Of Heartworm In Nsw, Qld & Sa
Salukifan replied to Inevitablue's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
A few years back a friend of mine's dog tested positive here in Canberra. Friend had been told by her vet that heartworm wasn't an issue locally so she didn't use a preventative.... but the dog holidayed on the NSW north coast. -
Let me break it down for you. You want people passionate about purebred dogs to assist crossbred dog owners to ascribe breeds to theirs? Before you know it, the X disappears from the dog's description and forum posters are talking about "my Biddleonian Retriever" or "my X cross Y breed" or describing their dog's behaviour according to breeds that may or may be part of their parentage. It's a slippery slope. I don't mind these threads. I contribute to most. What I DO mind (and I expect others are saying the same) is when the actions and behaviour of such dogs are sheeted home to such breed descriptions when there is no way of verifying them. Purebred SBT owners must rip their hair out over this one. Mind you, at least some of the more knowledgeable purebred enthusiasts can attempt to talk people out of describing their dogs as F1 crosses of two fairly rare purebreds. Success in this area has been patchy though.

Because that is the agenda that some people want to push. And they'll take any opportunity (relevant or not) to push it. If you want reasoned, factually based responses to any issue, don't ask a zealot. There's the agenda and there's the zealot. I rest my case.
