  1. Angelsun: This thread was about a motion to ban ALL docked dogs (lawfully and otherwise) from ALL ANKC events. Any owner of a dog with a tail could have been effected. So why limit the discussion to those who own formerly docked breeds? The motion is dead. It has been voted down by every State outside Victoria that has voted. And quite a few of those who influenced that vote don't own docked breeds. Blaming those outside the docked breeds for the laws passed in this country is neither accurate nor fair. And as for NZ? What laws have they had reversed??
  2. Unless people are encouraged to become responsible breeders, the breed does not go forward. Here's an opportunity Cruzzi - to encourage, not insult. Your digs at the OP and I and at my breed of choice contribute NOTHING to the future of your breed of choice. Have a good think about that. Its just vitriol. I clearly know more than you about an ANKC sport that involves finding quail. :) And I'm hardly unaware of the problems faced by ethical breeders confronted by a sea of profit breeding of their breed of choice due to fashion and demand. It's hardly a new issue. But you don't get it do you? An innocent question asking about how people got started as breeders deserves better than a bunch of bile from someone who could offer a valuable persepective if they chose to. You want a new generation of responsible SBT breeders? How about you do something about to encourage someone to get started the right way? Or butt out and let others do what you seem incapable of - saying somethign constructive about anything.
  3. She has somewhat limited access to the house. I'll let her in on and off for a few hours during the day. I like having her near me. Even if I do have to vaccuum 10x as much. OH is more funny about it. He comes from a family where dogs are outside pets. My family had dogs sleep on our beds. So its a bit of a comprimise. Even a compromise is good. :)
  4. Have you considered giving her access to the house? Time inside with you is time in company and that's important for a social animal.
  5. Don't expect her to entertain herself. That's rule one for dogs in the burbs. Stimulation and exercise will have to come via you. Discipline yourself to walk her more. Either drive to better walking or walk her twice a day. Her socialisation boat has sailed. I'd be focussing on the loose leash walking and forgetting about her meeting new adult dogs. If it goes wrong it will go badly wrong. Obedience clubs aren't usually much help on behavioural issues.
  6. Oh that's right - because NO ONE EVER used poodles to produce popular pups. I have more than one breed Dougie. Someone asks people to talk about how they became a breeder. You leap to the offensive based on what again? Its clear you have nothing constructive to add. How about you take Bex and have a nice lie down while people actually talk about how they decided to breed dogs.
  7. Save your breath. Really. You won't convince some folk of anything. But you could ask her to find where the EST is listed here
  8. I have a registered prefix but at this stage I only have entire dogs. A bitch will be a decision to make down the track and frankly I'm not convinced I'm cut out to breed. As a dog owner, I've always had purebred dogs and Whippets are far less at risk from idiots than poodles are. But why consider it? For the love of the breed and the opportunity to contribute to the next generation. Don't rush into it - lots to learn and you will need to be a CC member for a period of time before you can apply to a prefix. Step 1 will be to determine what makes a "good" SBT and to establish what lines you are interested in introducing into your kennel to make your start. That won't happen overnight.
  9. Ignore this one Schnooze - he likes attention. Shame he didn't answer the question.
  10. And ACT :) And every other state that has voted to date. So much for the widespread hyperbole about "betrayal" of members.
  11. Raw meat without bone is unbalanced - too much phosphorus and not enough calcium. You are better off feeding meat ON the bone.
  12. I've read it plenty of times. Yet to see any research that supports the assertion though.
  13. Or they could have been born tailless, but the truth is never as exciting as the chinese whispers And of course the breeder of that litter would no longer be around to defend herself now would she? That's not bad luck, its just being a bad gossip. This thread so far off track it's hopeless.
  14. There is no research that corolates dog aggression with human aggression. Indeed, there is research that suggests the two are rarely found together in the same dog. This kind of thinking is what brought us BSL.
  15. I'd go a decent dry and raw meaty bones. Way better for a growing pup and way better for your wallet. Way better when you do poo patrol in the back yard too. Most folk I know feed canned occasionally, if at all.
  16. I'd honestly not bother with the canned food. It's mostly water. Something like raw chicken wings and the odd beef rib would be far better. I assume you mean Eagle Pack food? I don't feed it but a lot of folk seem to rate it highly.
  17. You need to look outside Group 2 a bit more often Dougie. It's called Field Trialling and quail are central to the sport. :)
  18. I buy all my worming and flea products here.
  19. I even padlock the gate when I am home these days. Stops random attempts to enter the yard.
  20. My dogs have only ever tried the canned food - the green tripe and the venison ones. They really loved it but it's not cheap.
  21. Yep. Easy solution that PROTECTS THE DOG. Padlock the gate if the dog is in the front yard. Wrong person walks in and there could be serious trouble for your dog.
  22. Poodles can suffer from Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Pressure on a disc can do this. X-rays would probably be a starting point but I'd not be doing nothing. I'd be getting each and every one of this dogs to a decent QUALIFIED chiropractor for regular adjustment. This can actually prevent recurrence of some spinal issues IMO. If any of the affected dogs are overweight, I'd be put them on a strict weightloss routine and getting them fit. Lack of weight can help keep the pressure off the spine and muscle tone helps hold things in the right place. I'd also be eliminating high stress activities like ball chasing. I have been through IVDD with one of my poodles and 4 years on he's had very few issues. Active management of any health issue can mean a better and longer life for your dog.
  23. As the motion is an electronic one, there won't be a meeting to decide its outcome.
  24. I pay less than $100 a bag for Royal Canin. As it is imported of course it costs more than in its country of origin. But my dogs do very well on it and find it highly palatable - isn't that "value for money", particularly when I can feed far less of it than some other foods? Please don't suggest that everyone who chooses to feed super premiums hasn't done their research - many of us have, often by talking amongst ourselves about what works for particular breeds. As I said earlier in the thread, RC is popular with sighthound people although I also know sighthound folk who feed Optimum - but not many. And frankly not every pet owner wants to feed their dog the best - for a lot of folk cost is more important than quality - a very short sighted view in my opinion. I can think of one person I know who battles constant ear infections in her dogs but refuses to feed anything but Supercoat. Feed what you wish - but it should be possible to do that without suggesting that those who feed something else have no idea what they're doing and are being ripped off.
