  1. My recommendation to anyone who wants a career or business in dogs is to get some dog training study and experience under your belt.
  2. Horses, blue water sailing and flying lessons make dog showing look like a Grade A investment. :)
  3. Can't think of a more likely way to spread Kennel Cough if it's about. Not a great idea from where I sit.
  4. What did the schedule say the class in group prizes would be?
  5. It's still competition. It brings out the best in some and the worst in others.
  6. See your vet. It may not come down to needing an x-ray. What were the pup's parents hip scores? People only succeed in removing you from competition if you let them. Arm yourself with facts and find a vet you can trust.
  7. Royal Canin here. Originally recommended by sighthound owners I respect but self selected by one of my Whippets (it's the only food I've tried that he really likes) I do add mince, tuna and sometimes organic coconut oil, more for taste than nutritional value. I think variety is important too. I also feed RMBs in other meals.
  8. +3 The issue for many clients wouldn't be how your dog got on with theirs but how well their dogs got on with yours. Many dogs don't welcome others into their sphere. Did you know that Collies also come in a Smooth (short coated) version?
  9. You look composed and confident in that pic Trish - well done! On leads I have currently adopted the "throw the lead on the ground and focus on the dog" approach. When I'm organised I sometimes put it around my neck but I find it difficult to stand up and get sorted quickly without garotting myself. I"ll have to watch how the guns do it. Here's Dodge and I yesterday (photo courtesy of Wreckit). I should be further behind the dog, on both knees and pointed more at the Dodge's head. Next time!
  10. Well done on today's Junior in Group Trisven!
  11. The most obvious sign is when they shiver. Their body temp is about the same as ours. If you're feeling the need to rug up or seek shelter, they probably will too unless they are exercising (hate seeing dogs rugged to the nines out walking). Unless they're really well insulated with an appropriate coat, or fat that is. I'd prefer to keep a Cocker well groomed and provide a coat or shelter than let it become a mess. The problem with grown out coats is getting them dry if they get wet - that can be a real nightmare.
  12. I think this guy needs a decent family lawyer more than he does a walker. My guess is if he had the former, he wouldn't need the latter.
  13. How is it different. Few , if any dogs are aggressive all the time. There are just different triggers for the aggression. How does a dog main another dog if its not "aggressive"? She said she pulled it back which could have made the maiming much worse than what it actually was. So what are you suggesting? Only serious injury indicates aggression? The poodle didn't accidentally end up in the dog's jaws did it?

  15. The dog is DA. Territoriality is one possible reason for what motivates it. Trust me, if the dog bites half the head off another dog it IS seriously aggressive. Whether it would be aggressive off its own property is another matter. But regardless of that, the dog is now a killer and should be managed so that it never gets another chance. It shouldn't have access to the front yard for a start but a DD declaration seems the very least that should happen IMO.
  16. Do you ever stray into the realm of effective communication? It's not literacy that's the issue here but people struggling to understand what you're actually on about. Situation normal.
  17. I THINK that was a compliment. :) How can you tell? I'll claim a limited understanding of the dialect. :) But maybe I got it wrong.
  18. My first question would be "how many litters has she had?". A three year old dog in some hands would have had four or so litters. She won't bounce back if she's been bred every season she's had. My first suggestion would be a full vet check up and a visit to a chiropractor. Pregnancy can be hard on the spine.
  19. I THINK that was a compliment. :)
  20. Depend on how you view seeing a chiropractor. I use one to prevent serious issues developing, not to cure them. If there's a serious issue, I'd be getting x-rays and I'd say most vet chiros would take them. In the one dog I've had that manifested a serious spinal issue, x-rays were taken. However, my chiropractor has never seen them.
  21. The collar you've posted is a check chain - it will tighten to the point of strangulation if it catches on something. If you're looking for a collar to leave on with his rego, I'd go for a fixed collar of some kind.
