  1. Dobermann, Bullmastiff and Amstaff....maybe a Ridgie. Just love having so many dogs in one place to check out.
  2. Just wondering if anyone knows what time the All breeds show starts and finishes Sunday? Would I be safe to assume that "All breeds" will be there? Want to check out a few different breeds...never been to a show before.
  3. It's like listening to a tap drip when I'm trying to sleep!
  4. Our pug has an annoying habit, when he's on his bed he will sit there and lick it constantly. New bed, old bed, freshly washed bed, different fabric beds...he licks them all. Not a big deal but i find it very curious, anyone know why?
  5. Thanks, I'll avoid the Roodle like the plague! Funny that I did the K9 breed selector and Rottie came up as one of the matched breeds.
  6. I know, my family had a Rottie when I was a teenager so I know they're fine. While on the subject, has anyone got any opinions on Roodles? (Rottie x standard poodle) The wife doesn't seem to have a problem with them for some reason!
  7. As I mentioned in the original post I would only be getting a new dog when our two have gone to doggy heaven. When I mention a laid back dog, I mean as an adult (my boxer is nearly 7 and still crazy like a puppy). I don't want to buy an adult dog, the whole puppy thing is fun and not an issue at all, I want the grown dog to be laid back. My boxer still has playtime as well as walks, but spreading the attention and exercise between two is where it becomes too time consuming for me right now. Basically in my house I'm the dog carer and the wife concentrates more on the baby. We're definitely only getting one dog only, far easier to maintain and don't have to double up on all the bills.
  8. Personality wise, something fairly laid back, sooky with family and energy levels medium but imposing looking. My main focus is finding one that doesn't require intensive exercise to tire him out, I'm happy to take them for a walk everyday but my boxer needs way more than a walk to be satisfied. As much as I love my boxer I don't think we really match. Now that we have a baby it's even more difficult to spend so much time with him tiring him out.
  9. I like the look of American bulldogs, how is he with other dogs and visitors and kids?
  10. This is a generalisation, but I've heard Akita's are a bit bitey. Plus the extra hair is an issue, our pug drops hair like nothing else, so short hair is also wanted.
  11. Hopefully this topic hasn't been done to death, but I'm beginning to research for our next dog. When our two are gone we will only get one dog. I've always been a fan of bigger dogs, I work shift work and my wife feels safer at home with our boxer around. But he is very high energy and allergy prone, my vet has a great car because of him. I'd like peoples recommendation for a good guard for a family with young kids, with medium energy levels. I'm leaning towards Bullmastiff but would like to hear others experiences, maybe Ridgeback. Not after an overly aggressive or vicious dog but an imposing looking and sounding dog people wouldn't like to try their luck with. Wife won't hear of Rotties as she had one kill her family dog once, so they're out.
  12. That pic is exactly what he gets, I just take him to the vet early. I waited and monitored him once, by the time the itching drove him crazy it was all over him and I had to take him to the after hours emergency vet...a very expensive trip for one injection!
  13. He had an on lead walk yesterday, no running through grass or trees, eaten the same stuff, must've been a bite of some kind is all I can think of.
  14. Had my boxer at the vet this morning, he broke out in the same allergic reaction he's had a few times. He comes up in these small lumps/welts over his legs which eventually spread over his body and make him itch like crazy. Has anyone else experienced this or know what it is? My vet is a man of very few words. An injection at the vet clears it up but really knocks him out too.
  15. I've seen one next to the ringwood bypass, near Ringwood St. No idea what they're like as I haven't been.
  16. Can suffer allergies or is it very common? I know vets rubs their hands together with glee when a boxer comes through the door!
  17. Do Bullmastiffs have any issues with skin allergies? Having a Boxer with skin problems, I'd rather avoid breeds prone to it! Plus a decent guard dog that doesn't require extensive exercise would be great.
  18. I already split the feeds morning and night. He tolerates chicken fine, his poos were better with roo, but he's just looking too thin now to continue. I've tried Supercoat sensitive stomach blend and it seems to agree with his stomach, but given that it's cheap I thought I should try for a better grade of dry food.
  19. Well I'm diverting from the all raw kangaroo, sweet potato and VAN sensitive skin mix. My boxer is losing a noticeable amount of weight and his coat looks pretty dull and average now. I'm thinking of putting him back on some BARF and dry food as I'm feeding him a mountain of roo and sweet potato at meals and bones in between and he's still looking skinny. What are the good dry food recommendations for dogs with sensitive stomachs?
  20. A few years back I attended Alpha dog training for about 18 months, I've been to other dog schools, that have slightly different methods. At alpha I liked the way the classes were more realistic in the dogs interaction. No walking in lines, stop turn, sit. It was basically dogs doing obedience but walking around each other in any direction on lead as you would in everyday life. The whole dog in a circle correction thing that they use worked to a point. My boxer (just doesn't listen under distraction) improved a bit, but that just could've been the fact he was around other dogs more often. Lots of staff, some very good, some very average. The school lost me when i paid over $100 to attend the special one day dog training at their kennels. Pretty much did 30 mins of obedience, nothing new, the rest of the time the dogs were in their kennels while we watched their DVD about problem dogs that they solved in only a few sessions. Just a very long "How good are we?" session. I can say I got ZERO out of it, and i never went back to the school after feeling so ripped off. So that's my experience with them. Next dog I'm not sure if I'd go back, but so many other dog schools are incredibly mundane just walking back and forth for an hour. I want a place that adds a bit of fun and excitement. If anyone knows a good dog school in the Eastern suburbs of Victoria I'd love to know about it.
  21. Have been chatting to Belinda at Vets all Natural, and for now I think I'll try the roo with VAN omega 3 and skin and coat formula with the sensitive skin mix and see how that goes for 6 weeks. I wasn't aware the Roo Dr B BARF had beef in it....thanks for the heads up.
  22. Cheers to all offering help, to anyone apparently offended by a post topic I've apparently repeated, get out of the house and off the computer! Too long trawling the forums.
  23. How do you find it cost wise? Does the price compare to BARF per meal? You're a very good chef to those dogs!
