  1. I remember once a upon a time we could sell pups on main registration and those who did not want to breed did the right thing and had their animals desexed. Unfortunately not any more. Some breeders still sell on main register in my breed and advertise the fact. Some nice dogs here and their in their pedigrees and in many cases, pity the people selling are colour breeders. Others I have known have changed their stance from all on limit to main when pups are not moving. Nice flashy website, comes on DOL all ethical like, claims to show and other sports, but doesn't but has ethics like a sieve. Likewise, like puppy buyers, some have come across all proper, asked the questions, answered the questions and later you find out they are the worst scum and you would not even give them a pet rock. But as far as the email goes.. IF someone asks me the basic questions: What's left, How much and when are they ready. The answer they get is pretty much answers to those questions. If they come back and ask more questions, then I will start the screening process. Why spend hours of time drafting an email screening them, if the person is not serious in the first place. I have better things to do with my time than waste it on window shoppers. If someone sends me a bit of information about themselves and spends the time composing their email, then I will respond in kind. I do not believe in jumping down potential buyers throats on their first email contact. To me that is one sure fire way to send them off to a BYB or pet store. Sometimes you have to remember that the email enquiry may be their first dog they are buying, and may not be aware of the protocols/screenings breeders go through. Sometimes you just have to give them the benefit of the doubt. It becomes fairly clear soon enough who are serious and who aren't. But the bit about "Phone me ASAP as they are going quick" well, yeah I would run too. In saying this, I have had it where I have had a number of people interested in one puppy, all whom I would not have had an issue selling to (after a screening process). I am honest enough to say there are other interests in XYZ puppy. Generally though I offer it first in first served, to try and be fair to all concerned.
  2. You also forgot.. Registered Breeders in some councils MUST have a Breeders Permit to breed. To obtain, must prove membership/prefix holder with CCC Registered Breeders MUST also register all dogs with their council and pay yearly registration/breeder permit registration UNREGISTERED BREEDERS: CANNOT get Breeders Permit from their council because they are not members of a CCC so breed "hidden" in their back yard Registration for Whole animals in some councils are quite expensive, so therefore may not be registered with council. Not having any controlling body (Namely CCC) or abiding by council rules, many are also not compulsary microchipped or vaccinated and are sold at 6 weeks (before standard vacc schedule) and now minimum microchip age with vet's stat dec saying it is not detrimental to the pup Are not able to be traced/tracked or kept an eye on as registered breeders through their memberships with CCC or council, and therefore fly under legislative radars.
  3. Line breeding is fine if you know what you are doing or have someone behind you that knows what they are doing as your mentor. You need someone behind you that really knows those old(er) dogs and what they threw. (what the cousins, brothers/sisters threw and corresponding offspring). Research is the key in any breeding program. Problem of often is finding the information you need. Someone knowledgeable in the lines you are using is a key. There are some dogs within pedigree's you would not want to double up on, and others that are fine. In saying that, some outcrosses really work too. Some don't. The more you double up, the more chance you have of getting those dogs good traits, but at the same time, you also increase the chance of doubling up and getting those bad traits come through. So research is great. You often don't know about a problem until you have bred it yourself. Some breeders don't like to advertise or admit they have bred it themselves until the same issue comes out in someone else's litter.
  4. What kind of positive answer did you receive? While it is concerning, I have to wonder: What was their ad? Did they have "pups sold on limit reg" or the like on their ad? Other conditions etc? They may presume that buyers know the difference between main and limit? I know a few breeders who take this for granted that pet people know what main and limit rego is. Some breeders are still ethical, but may judge their buyers in person. They may also not be word saavy or net saavy. They may also be used to people shopping around and in the first instance have come across all friendly. I certainly do not like to jump down puppy buyer's throats on all the stipulations and conditions and what kind of person they are on first contact. (well some I have, but that is due to their email in the first place). If I receive an email like that, I will tell them how much pups are and when they are ready to go and what is left. I may not put much more in a response either. If they are interested, they will get back to me. If not, I have not wasted a whole lot of my time either. If they get back to me then I will start to add in the screening questions. If that makes sense.
  5. Thanks, she's having the hip/elbow/eye tests done later this month .. as stated by the breeder and will show me the results. I've heard some stories already about breeders altering health papers as Belgians are known to have Epilepsy .. so they alter papers to show them as seizure free .. when they actually aren't. So it's making my search a little more diffucult But lots of fun!! It does pay to be thorough in your research. Unfortunately even then, some can be caught out. Best of luck for you. If you do choose on one breeder and manage to get a pup from there, please don't forget to let the other breeders where your name is on you have found a pup. The good ones should thank you for the courtesy of letting them know.
  6. Just make sure you see ORIGINALS of what ever health tests are claimed. I do not know your breeder or anything, but in the past there have been some who have done the wrong thing and altered health tests to suit their claims. This fortunately is in the minority, but with the age of computers is not impossible.
  7. Huski, I have not seen a topic list from the camp. Ann said I will get an email about a month before the camp with details and payment info requirements. If I am going to drive all that way, I am going to stay so splurged in a cabin. I could of camped with my dogs, they are certainly used to camping. I know you can go as a day visitor. You just pay for the seminar, morning/afternoon tea and lunch. You can do that both days if you wish.
  8. As long as the bitch meets the health and mating requirments with the ANKC and is of good standard, there is nothing wrong with mating a bitch that old. The 3-5 year old bitches may already have had one litter (Your post does not specify if that is the case). Some breeds the minimum age is 12 months, other breeds it is older. That is ANKC rules. I do not know the minimum age for Tervueren as set by the ANKC. If she passes their scoring as set by the Shepherd clubs then again there is not problems in my eyes. You can have two pups from one litter raised in breed homes. Like humans, some individuals mature more quickly than others. When you think about it, even humans can physically reproduce as young as 13 (and some do). The body is telling the individual it is ready. It is morals and ethics why humans do not reproduce that early. Back in the dim dark years past, it was not uncommon for a human female to start raising a family in her teens. Life expectancy back then is also not what it is today in humans.
  9. My own vet says one part of the C5 vaccination can be done every three years as per manufacturers specifications. Both the vet and the manufacturer will stand by that claim. The other part of C5 does not have a 3 year cycle and needs to be done annually. Do you think I can remember which way it goes now? I would titer.
  10. I am not sure how they organise a share cabin. Your best bet would be to contact Ann at Camp Tailwaggers and ask her how it is structured. IE: you just say you are prepared to share and she puts you in a cabin with a stranger or you organise a group of friends and share your own. I don't know if any of the other cabins have room in theirs. I just booked the last cabin that had no one in it. Now it has two.
  11. I know the cabins sleep four. I have myself and one other friend in there so far. I do not know if there are other share cabins available. I know when I enquired there was only one "whole" cabin left. Tilly: I have camped/4wd where you have to wash off your windscreen before getting in the car and gone driving. I remember a weekend a couple of years ago like that. Ice on the tent, car, etc. Nice and brisk. I believe we are also going camping 4wd again this year in June at Sundown National Park.. Now that is cold in a tent.
  12. Ultimately it is your choice to clip or not to clip. I do not think either side of the fence will ever agree with the other side. More like a case of agree to disagree. Clipping does change the texture and structure of the coat. Similar to people shaving. It grows back thicker, more wirey and quicker. I have a friend who is a groomer and she said the under body clip is becoming popular as they only clip the belly and leave the rest, it for the most part does not look like a dog has been clipped I have BC's and one of mine has just grown her coat back after having pups mid last year. It is nice, thick and lustrous. It also has been quite hot here in Brisbane these last weeks. Still I have not clipped, nor do I clip my BC's and advise my puppy buyers not to clip unless it is for veterinary reasons or in some cases they live in high paralysis tick areas and it then becomes a safety and well being issue. Some people sware clipping helps their dogs through the summer months. Others say they see no difference in their pets. My ex said his husky felt the heat more once clipped. He thought it would help him and after having it done said never again. I have two of those clam shells filled with water. They get filled and dug out almost daily. Wet towels on those shadecloth beds and 2ltr frozen ice blocks on the hottest of hot days.
  13. Why did you think I got a cabin. Even with the excellent portable electric blankets border collies make!!!! I have camped there in the middle of winter and it can be, um quite cold.
  14. Everytime I walk out my back door I have to keep up the mantra to myself "I must not harm the neighbour or their dogs" Two Amstaffs that love to bark and bark and bark. They set off mine and the ferral that lives in the house tells my dogs to shut up.
  15. Yay may not be able to do a full Volhard as it requires you to take the pups away to an unfamiliar area. You can do a partial one at the home of the breeder. If you know someone who is into breeding, you could try Puppy Puzzle by Pat Hastings. While it looks at the conformation of the dog, it also looks a little towards the temperament. It is one that can be done at the breeders home and is done at 8 weeks. No matter if you are breeding pedigree or cross. Breeding is a lottery. Pure and simple. In the pedigree world, you can put together the two best champions with excellent health stats and complimentary type/style and bloodlines, and end up with pups in the litter with problems. You can do an outcross mating to another line/style that does not look crash hot on paper but produce some excellent examples of purebreds. At the end of the day genes do funny and marvelous things. You can like people on her have said, bought a crossbred and it has lived to a ripe old age. I know others who have had crossbreds and have had a large amount of problems and their dogs have had to be PTS at a young age. HD and all those are in all dogs. Not just large ones. You can put 0:0 hip scored dogs together and get it. You can put dogs with higher hips scores together and not produce it. If this is the neighbour's second litter, see if they know where offspring from the first litter is? Do they have photos or anything of those pups as adults? it may give you an idea on what you could expect. I would be looking at older offspring of pedigree dogs to see what they produce, so the same would go for a person looking at a BYB litter. I don't agree what the two neighbours have done. I cannot condone it. I may kind of understand a first time accident, but not a second. It would seem they have no inclination of desexing the breed and while everyone here may not agree with what has happened, do you wish to possibly start neighboughood conflict by trying to force them to desex the bitch?? You know your neighbours better than us, so may have a good idea if that is good road to take. I have a woman up the back from me with whole amstaff boy. I would love for him to be two stone lighter.. But I would never dream of going over there and offering to pay to telling her to get the boy desexed. She would probably shoot me. If you have doubts on whether you want something from this breed mix, then I would definately wait. You said you were more keen on a Weim or boxer. If that is your feelings, I would probably pass this over and continue looking at what your're more set one. The right pup/adult will come along. The neighbours litter is VERY convenient, but is it something you REALLY want?
  16. Check with the caravan park. many of the ones we stayed at while on holidays did not allow you to leave the dog at the park unattended, even if you had your own accomodation.
  17. Dunbogan, just south of Coffs. Coffs also apparantly has a good caravan park in the middle. "Dog people" stay at the showgrounds and "abnormal people" stay in the caravan park side. They are basically side by side and its a walk to the beach. I think the place was Coffs harbour caravan park. Sleepy little place. Laurietown across an inlet (bridged) has woolies etc. Many caravan parks will not allow dogs if you are renting cabins/caravans. They will allow dogs if you have your own accomodation (tent/caravan). Some say only "small dogs". But for many of those I also managed to say they were obedience trained show dogs and got away with four on tour. I also had the dog trailer which helped me for the number. The "Big 5" group has a policy of no dogs. Try "Family caravan park group" and there was one other, but cannot think of their name right now. We just came back late last year from two weeks away with four border collies and a trailer. The problem with Nth NSW is all the national parks. You cannot take dogs in. That was one thing we found an issue while away. If you liked sitting on a beach and chilling, fine, but if you wanted to go look at something you then become limited.
  18. Thanks so much Tilly. I have booked the last cabin for myself and we're going. I will see if a friend will come as well, if not I will open it up for share.
  19. EWWWWWWW.. That is just WRONG!
  20. No its not. That is the sad part about it. Maybe I should copy and paste it and email it back to someone who was asking about stud enquiries for their Pet Choc BC. Gave the usual score.. are they registered, is the bitch health tested etc.. The mind just boggles.
  21. The advertiser I have seen on there quite a bit. A few weeks ago he was wanting transport for a dog from Toowoomba way to Gympie. Probably that dog! All the ads are the same or similar worded. Changes an email address every so often. Has bitches on heat ready for other people's studs or be quick xyz needs to find a home!
