  1. On one of the major free pet listings. There is one breeder there who advertise their pups "UNREGISTERED". They also breed registered litters. The person is also a judge. I see even through the DOL listings, that not all breeders who are from QLD are microchipping their puppies.. Sorry folks, but Microchipping is now a LEGAL requirement BEFORE they leave you!!! Animal Management Act (Cats and Dogs) 2009. The quality of breeders on the DOL listings has clearly dropped in my breed. You look at their dogs, breedings and the AMOUNT of puppies being sold, you just have to wander.. There are even a couple of breeders there who have PERMANENT ads up. They just keep updating the listing to this month's puppy availability. You hear numerous reports from a number of people of problems within in multiple litters. Yet they want to breed yet another 6th litter from the same bitch!!!! When CCCQ only allow 4 litters on a bitch (need theirs and vet approval for more). (There have been a few rants on FB by other breeders re this as it is advised by the breeder as well) Unfortunately, when the respected breeders see this, and they themselves have been lied to by similar bad ethical breeders, they shut their doors to access to their dogs, making it harder and harder for people to try to do the right thing and use GOOD dogs to keep the breed going in the best light possible. Otherwise it is like someone else just posted - the bad circle keeps going around. Bad dogs being used over bad bitches producing bad puppies. I have only been in the breed here (breeding) for 8 years. But when I decided to leap from dog owner to breeder, I made a choice to do it properly. No shortcuts, and be responsible. Not just pump puppies out using any dog I can get my hands on, or use what is sitting in my back yard. I went on the search for any breed/breeding/genetic/health/training book I could get my hands on to the point now I can say I have a pretty impressive library. I am not an advocate for manditory 8 week desexing. I am sitting on the other side of the fence for that. I get asked for Mains Registered pups, my answer is no. I was prepared once to help someone out and get them started, until I found out what they were up to. Thankfully they did not get one of my puppies. They ended up getting a puppy from a colour breeder saying it was "show quality". Sorry it wasn't - it had a blue eye.. a major fault in the breed. It is a shame that many breeds are falling down in numbers and DECENT breeders. We are being more and more regulated, more and more likely due to this. Again a shame.
  2. I had one bought on ebay for barking and for a dog barking in a crate... Useless. My father is an electrician... Said they can be good, but are VERY VERY directional. and do not have a long range. Something to consider.
  3. Even as a breeder/exhibitor.. I prefer my puppies go into pet homes where the only expectation is a well behaved and loved companion. While I do show, my dogs are family pets first and foremost. As there is only ONE winner in showing... the expectations are high, and it gets very disheartening to keep losing when you start out. I know it... been there. I still lose more than I win, but I also think I am getting better the more I get out there. It is worse to be sold a dog whom you believe and bought in good faith, to realise when you get there.. it is a far cry from a show dog.. Only one of my puppies (and I only breed maybe one litter/year) is on Main Register and that is to a good friend/fellow breeder whom I trust and know very well. The rest have been Limit and into loving pet homes, and there have been no regrets to where they have gone.
  4. I have known too many people have been cheated, lied to and had dogs "stolen" by other breeders, puppy buyers etc. Just have a look at my breed's puppy listings and you can see why it is so hard to trust people at their word. Their word means nothing!!! A dog does not work out - the breeder is slammed for selling them a dud The dog/bitch does work out, the bitch is then bred and bred and bred... The dog is studded to everything in their yard and everyone else's. No thought/planning or research is done to breeding programs. The importance has gone from structure/temperament to "what colour does it carry?". Out the window has gone "betterment of the breed" and in comes "how much money can I make" People who do not show or compete in any activity are pumping out puppies and then claiming they are "show quality", whereas if they actually stepped foot in a show ring, they MAY just realise how far from show quality their dogs actually are. Little consideration is being given to the genetic health of the animals that are being bred. Dogs are NOT fully health tested, they may be "clear by parent" for one or two, or at minimum, have tested for one or two. But not hip or elbow scored, and Mange, deafness, epilepsy, HD, OCD or immune issues are not there because they raise their puppies by a "natual diet". Even when a problem is identified, they continue to breed the animal, passing on more defective genes - AND selling those dogs to other "NEW" breeders, saying "there are no problems in my line". Generations down the track, it rears its head again.. "oops" I do not desex my puppies before they leave me at 8 weeks. I do vet VERY carefully. I also sell EVERYTHING on LIMIT, as I don't breed for the general populace. I breed for myself and find loving PET homes for the others. I have stashed one or two animals for possible future plans. They are in CO-OWN.. NO EXCEPTIONS!
  5. Dare I say it.. Also try the RSPCA and Animal Welfare League up here in Qld. I remember AWL pushing to have compulsary desexing of all dogs and cats and other stuff before our Animal Management (Dogs and Cats) Act 2008 came in. There was also a big community input phase where DPI also were handling certain aspects. They may have some information tht may be of assistance. Sorry do not have a website. Do a search for the public consultation phase to that Legislation: It may point you in a diretion of who to contact. Here is some things I found: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBkQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dlgp.qld.gov.au%2Fresources%2Fnewsletter%2Flgbulletin%2F2008%2F1608-consultation-animal-management-bill-2008.pdf&rct=j&q=animal%20management%20act%202008%20consultation&ei=CsXkTfSaCITcvwOs8bSTBw&usg=AFQjCNGlThmbMPmGTlA87WviXYqpctGp-A&cad=rja http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=7&ved=0CD8QFjAG&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ndn.org.au%2Ffiles%2FSummitProceedings%2F9.45-QLD-Bill.pdf&rct=j&q=animal%20management%20act%202008%20consultation&ei=CsXkTfSaCITcvwOs8bSTBw&usg=AFQjCNEts9xWf7-aWnUeHqvMjdFmpgFOog&cad=rja http://deathrowpets.wordpress.com/2011/03/31/update-from-national-rspca-on-stop-puppy-farm-campaign/
  6. Price is important of course or at minimum competitive.. I am not loyal to one company or another. But for me as a breeder dropping off something like 4-5 puppies to the airport over a few days etc.. It is customer service. I do not want to be running back and forth between terminals, or hanging around at one terminal for an hour, then the same at the other because the transport mob I used stuffed up both freight bookings. (They were done by two separate people on two separate days). I want my puppy transported profesionally, promptly and without too much fuss or hassle. I want the puppy to arrive happy and not trembling in the back of their crate due to boofy ham fisted attendants. (I know this can not sometimes be helped by the transport company themselves). I do not want my puppy left on the tarmack in the hot sun while they are loading something else.. (seen this done too).
  7. I too have an oldfield. Variable speed with heater. Oldfield's are more expensive. But they are solid. They have a good steel case. I used to have a libertyforce Ultra. Not a bad dryer, cheap and not heated. I found the plastic started breaking after awhile. I have heard varying reports of Ezycoat Dryers and Double K. Some love them, some don't. Both are cheaper than the Oldfield. Definitely look at a heated model. Variable speed is good for heads, final grooming, puppies and timid dogs.
  8. I am rather concerned about this claim. HD as I am aware of in the breed generally is not THAT huge. I know of some dogs from some lines who have recently shown some considerable higher than average scores. At last count: The BC breed average was around a total score of 8. Of course that is not going to reflect BYB or probably even an accurate score for the whole of the breed. Many dogs I know are sporting below the breed average. I know even 0:0 hips can produce HD. There are also links to environment. I know there is a link to genetic predisposition. Unless the dog is showing major signs for limping or rolling hips or similar, then I am concerned a vet is wanting to not only do very invasive, but expensive surgery on a 16 week old puppy. I definitely would be seeking a second or third opinion from an expert. I had one so called expert here say my 8 month old bitch at OCD in the shoulder (but not showing clinical signs). I had her re-evaluated by two other specialists who thankfully found nothing wrong with her. That bitch is now 4 years old, had two litters and is still fine. No OCD. I later found out the so called vet specialist who originally said she had OCD LOVES making the claim on pedigree dogs and trying to get people to go for surgery. I also found out, that a good percentage also sought a 2nd opinion from other vet specialists who also did not find a problem with the animals. I have forwarded this link to a couple of other BC people.. So hopefully they will come in and add their experience/knowledge
  9. Last year, I had one puppy Brisbane to Launceston for $140. Most BC pups go in either a PP40 or PP20 crate ( I prefer PP40) and are below 10 kilos. Year before I flew two bc pups together to Darwin for $250. Most of mine have been between $120 and $160
  10. Livermol is generally available from your animal produce store. Some produce stores do sell it by the kilo. If this is the case, you can buy smaller amounts. But make sure you also look on a whole bag for the amounts to give a dog as the product is aimed at livestock. It is a meal type powder, a little like bran in consistancy.
  11. I introduce bones as early as I can. between 4-6 weeks. I start off with chicken necks, cut in half or so, so they do not try to swallow the whole thing. I will keep generally with chicken until about 7-8 weeks where I will introduce lamb brisket. Maybe some beef brisket around 12-16 weeks when they start to lose their front baby teeth. I don't introduce hard bones until 6 months or until they get their adult canines. Found if you introduce hard bones too early, they have a greater chance of breaking their baby canines. (That is not to say, they don't break them chewing something ELSE they shouldn't).
  12. If you can, fly the dog via Virgin Airways. AAE/QANTAS do charge more due to their pricing scale. I know some airports now, will only accept animal freight through one company - AAE/QANTAS or VIRGIN. Found that one out last year when I was transporting pups/dogs around. As I said previously, I know Canberra will only accept dogs via AAE/QANTAS, and Launceston by Virgin. I know Canberra used to have a Virgin freight terminal, as that is who I used to always fly with as they do tend to be cheaper. I have used both Jet Pets and Dogtainers, Prices are similar depending on which airline you specify. But after my Major stuff up with Dogtainers, will never use them again
  13. You should have replied and told them you have a robot dog you will swap them for... It won't pee or poop on your floor, won't dig holes and won't annoy the neighbours barking all day and night
  14. I will only use Jetpets now. I used Dogtainers to ship two dogs to two different directions on two different airlines on the same morning about an hour apart. The first was AAE/QANTAS to Canberra (as AAE is the only freight to do Canberra now)..Booked paid.. got email.. Arrived at AAE: Could not find the booking on the system. Rang the afterhours person. no information. Almost had to pay for freight again. Even though it was booked and paid two days prior. The next dog was going Virgin to Launceston (again due to freight companies). I had PAID for a PP40 crate (bought rather than hire). I arrived and the crate was a PP20. I had to hang around the airport for 50 minutes for the person from Dogtainers to come to the freight office with a PP40 crate.
  15. It is not so much about starting another thread to allergies.. One has to remember on a forum or anything where a question like this is posted, we have to be responsible when suggesting "add this or that"... It may be fine to add X or Y to a diet. There are suppliments you can buy for dogs that contain Seaweed or Kelp, but there are also other preparations where the dose rate is for a heavier being than a dog. Even Livermol, has dose rates from memory for horses and dogs. Many produce stores also sell Livermol by the kilogram. But remember to look on a full bag to get the dose rates. OP: do a check back through other topics as this topic has come up before and there were other links posted by other members regarding the link between long term use of seaweed/kelp in canine diets to side effects (maybe not a true allergy as such, but certainly side effects)
  16. Someone hit the nail on the head before: "Iodine is a TRACE element" I have to carry an Epi-pen. Unknown extra Iodine in foods or cross contamination is very dangerous. The government wanted to bring in legislation (because some people were not getting enough iodine)to make it compulsory to make bread with Iodised salt. There were other foods they were wanting to be forced to be made with Iodised salt. I remember as a child Iodine was common on Chemist shelves.. Ask your local chemist why they had to remove pure iodine from sale quite a few years back. Seafood (in particular shellfish) is one of the heighest forms of Iodine concentrations found naturally in food. I am to the point if someone uses the same utensils to turn a prawn on one BBQ/pan and another meat object in another pan/plate, I will react. I was just warning the OP the possible dangers of adding seaweed and Kelp: I did have another "more reliable" article here somewhere about uses of kelp and seaweed in pet diets and long term effects.. I found this while doing a quick google: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=243x25841 It is a link to another forum. The article I had was also from the United States... I will keep searching
  17. With the chesnut horses we used to feed Livermol. Likewise when I used to have a chocolate BC many moons ago. Just remember LIvermol is a protein, so too much may put on some extra weight. It does take about a month for it to start to show. Also, if the hair is already "dead" then you will have to wait for the dog to malt that and grow the new hair to see much of a difference. Some animals, you just have to coat/rug... they will fade.. I have also heard some good reports for: Groomers Royal Jelly Food Supplement: Produces natural replenishment of hair. Ideal for dogs that drop coat and condition Colour-Max: Colour-max is designed to provide the natural substances necessary for your dog to synthesise the pigments responsible for giving colour to eyes, hair, skin, gums, lips and nose. The result is an intensifying of the natural colour of the animal. Colour-Max does not contain dye and uses only natural ingredients to realise animals full potential. The ingredients in Colour-Max are also important for healthy hair and can result in a shiny and lustrous coat, thus improving overall appearance. Colour-Max is suited to the following coat colours: Tri-colours Reds Browns Tans Fawns Brindles Black/Tan Red/White All other coat colours that may be of reddish-brown pigmentation or any combination of the reddish-brown and black pigmentation.
  18. Um.. try using Iodine on me and you will see. I will remember this time I get Anaphylaxis. I wonder I get asked if I have any reactions to Iodine when I have had any procedure done in the doctor/hospital.. The Iodine based pre procedure scrub or wound care must be over dosing too. Iodine is present in many foods.. It may be some do not need as much as others..The content in seaweed may be overdosing when used in higher frequency to some people/animals. http://www.healthsupplementsnutritionalguide.com/Iodine.html "Foods high in iodine are · salt-water fish · seafood and shellfish · seaweed like dulse, bladderwrack, kelp, nori · iodized table salt. Other foods containing iodine include · eggs · dairy products like cow's milk, cheese, yogurt · garlic · lima beans · mushrooms · sea salt (not high in iodine but provides other minerals as well) · sesame seeds · soybeans and soy products · strawberries · some vegetables like asparagus, spinach, summer squash, swiss chard, turnip greens. "
  19. I have heard of reports and without googling, there is a possible problem of people supplimenting canine diets with too much seaweed. Don't forget seaweed also has high concentrations of iodine. A common allergin with people which was why Iodine was taken off chemist shelves a number of years ago.. Iodine has made a reappearance in the form of Betadine in particular. Still for some people (myself included) are highly allergic to Iodine.
  20. One thing to also think about. Do YOU have they money to pay THEIR legal costs etc if YOU lose? How far do you want to drag your family through the stress of legal procedings. YOu are going civilly. You have to then rely on them paying up. The old saying "you cannot get blood from a stone". You may be perfectly right. You may be IN the right. but sometimes the "Cost" to "you" can be greater than what it is worth. I would be talking to your solicitor...
  21. Ps. I was trying to refrain from naming judge and secretary names. I showed on the weekend and it was nice to know the judge judges the animal not the handler
  22. I know ALL secretaries don't always book friends. I know of a few instances when it HAS happened. It is actually refreshing to enter a show and know the judge does not play favourites. It is what you SHOULD expect: the best dog on the day no matter who is on the end of the lead.
  23. Then there are some show secretaries who book judges who are known to like their dogs..No wonder entries to their shows for certain groups may be down??? People will not waste their money on known biased judges. I was at a show last week. Everyone on the sideline knew who would win.. Crony and very good friend, when that dog got group, no one was surprised. You get to which judge(s) are friends with certain people and tend to award those "friends". I do not know what is worse, the people entering under those judges or the judges for not looking at the dogs. You see some who are wined and dined in gazebos a month or more before the show. Judges who will not look at any dog but their friend's. I am sorry, I paid my money too. You may not like my dog, but please at least go over it! It is refreshing to FIND a judge who actually LOOKS at the dog and not the person on the end of the leash. The worst I ever personally heard while writing one day was one judge saying to their steward" Just a moment while I check the DOL point score, I don't want to embarrass myself by not putting up the winning dog". When on earth has a dog show being judged ONLINE!! Sorry DOL.. that pointscore is causing people to come ruthless and so bitchy. The "fun" is going out of showing, because some believe the DOL point score the bee all and end all.
  24. All puppies going into pet homes go on a limit register. NO ifs or buts. If the puppy buyer does not like it, they can buy a puppy elsewhere. They still get the same 3 generation pedigree certificate from the CCCQ listing the same pedigree. they get a pretty green one rather than a dirty red (IMO) one. (Do not like the red colour on our ped certs). I also keep a comprehensive breed database and print off a seven generation pedigree and place in their puppy folder. If they are not looking at breeding and are going to desex the puppy anyway, why put them on the main register? If they change their mind later and do breed, at least they cannot use your time and hard work and piggy back off it and breed that puppy to crap. They can still breed, but at least it is not going to be pedigree and your name, kennel and the contacts you have worked so hard to get are not going to end up on a pedigree certificate boasting only mediocre dogs at best. If they do not health test, also your kennel prefix is not going to be broadcasted everywhere to selling to someone who has not ethics or morals. If they decide (and with your input) at a later date the puppy MAY be suitable to breed, then you can move it up to main register. If you think the pup shows promise and do not want to see it desexed, then sell the puppy on a co-own on Main Register. Then at least you still have control on where and when that pup is bred to and more importantly with WHO!!
  25. I came into my relationship with the dogs.. Dylan loves dogs, so that is a plus. I came into the relationship with two, and the other two I have bred since. He was present at the birth of the second dog.. Long story, I invited him to dinner because I was on "puppy watch", and well, the bitch obliged and decided to have her litter a few days early as after dinner entertainment. I don't know if it was because he was there for the birth of Faith, but she is really HIS dog.
