I've heard good reports about Billy's Day Care for Dogs. They are in Belmont http://www.daycarefordogs.com.au/ Although.. I would be hesitant about sending a 4 month old small breed also. My girl is 6 months & is tiny compared to most dogs! What breed is she?

Sorry to sound harsh but perhaps if you'd kept your cat contained instead of letting it wander it wouldn't be dead. Whilst most people would apologise and feel terrible their dog had done this to someone else's pet they're not actually at fault in any way and probably get pissed off with roaming cats entering their yard all the time. I never said that their dog was at fault & never implied that they should have paid the vet bills. You think after 13 years I haven't beaten myself up enough over this? I really don't need pointing out that if the cat was kept indoors it would never have happened. I was confused by the OP as to who called the council.. was it her friend or the dogs owner?? If I was in the OP's friends shoes I would be over the mooon that they just showed concern towards the cat. I wouldnt as I didn't expect the dogs owner to foot the bills.

Who has phoned the council? Your friend or the dog owner? Many years ago I owned a beautiful white persian cat. She was just gorgeous. One day I got a call at work from the people across the road to say that their dog (I don't know what breed) had attacked her & she was in a bad way. They got my number from her tag - I'd never spoken to these people in my life. I rush the half hour home from work & find my poor little cat mauled almost to death & completely drenched from where they had to put the hose on the dog to get it off my cat. They hadn't even put a towel or anything over her to try and keep her warm & calm. They didnt give a sh*t. No apology.. nothing. Despite me spending hundreds on my little one having her jaw rewired & puncture wounds repaired I had to make the horrible decision to PTS as she wasn't recovering. I was devastated but what made it worse was the fact that I heard nothing from the people across the road again. They didn't pop round to ask after her or even put a note in my letterbox... nothing. It was a heartbreaking experience & I haven't thought about it in a long long time.

Hi RM Lucy used to nip a fair bit when she was tiny too. She was worse with my youngest who is 4. I taught him to stand still (like a soldier) & with his arms folded in front of him so she couldn't jump up & grab his hands. Also spraying aeroguard around feet/ankles (the kids - not dogs) was a great repellent. She hated the smell :)

Teaching Dog To 'speak' On Command
Cavstar replied to Cavstar's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks all! I forgot that I posted here! She is only 6 months old. She has started to bark if she hears something outside or if something is placed somewhere in the house or back yard thats not normally there. The other day she was barking at the bath water so I pulled the treats out. Same thing as the paint tin, happy to "speak" & treat but let the bath water out & she goes dead silent  -
Ohh exciting! I remember when I was waiting for my pup I was stressed about the toileting situation  I'm not sure about that loo though - I would think that my Lucy would try & eat the stuff in there! I ended up putting her in the laundry when we weren't home with the door locked open a tiny bit with fake grass outside in an enclosed area for her to toilet on. She still uses it from time to time (we have a doggy door there now) & I wash it once a fortnight or so. I don't find that it smells much at all. When we are home though she just asks to go out & whoever is closest opens the door :) Although when she was tiny we were taking her out every 20 mins or so. I had 3 weeks off work at the time so was lucky in that respect to be able to do that. Make sure you visit the CKCS thread & post lots of pics :D

This. I can't stand it when people refer to their dogs as their children or my son or daughter. It just doesn't seem right.. freaks me out too

Hi all Just wondering if anyone out there that can give me some tips on teaching my dog to "speak" Shes a cav so naturally not very vocal but from time to time she will bark at something...this morning it was a paint tin! Every time she barked I used the marker word "yes" & pretty soon she got the idea that when she barked she'd get a treat so then I threw in the word "speak" After a while every time I said "speak" she'd look at or move toward the paint tin & bark &then look back for a treat I then moved the paint tin out of her view & the game was over. I said "speak" she just looked around for the paint tin SO my question is how do I disassociate the paint tin (or whatever object) with her learning this trick? Or am I going about it the wrong way completely?

My friend has a Great Dane puppy who is 5 months old & she is HUGE!! Do they even make crates big enough for full grown Great Danes? I would be looking at an area of the house that others have suggested that you can block off.. kitchen or laundry? With the crate at one end & pee pads or newspaper down the other for him to toilet.

I'd suggest a Cav too! But I'm biased :) My girl is such a couch potato..sleeps all day when I'm at work, loves the kids to death, is highly intelligent & very easy to train. She loves cuddling up in bed or on the couch too but also loves a walk. Unfortuately my poor old cat passed away shortly after we got her. When they first met all she wanted to do was to play with the cat who used to ignore her & turn his back. I'm positive though that they would have been the best of friends :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't! Phew :) When she goes to the vets next I'll get them to scan it so I know where it is :)

Aww.. Kirsty..Your last post brought me to tears You sound like such a wonderful caring person who has done everything possible for this dog. I'm so sad for you that despite every effort Eric hasn't worked out for you.

So at dog training on the weekend the trainer was talking about dog handling. She asked if we could all feel our dogs microchip which apparently feels like a grain of rice. Everyone else in the class could feel their dogs.. except me The trainer said sometimes they have been known to travel as far as the tail but given she's only 5 months old she thought it would be unlikely Can everyone else feel their dogs?

I met a 12 yo at the beach the other day. Her owner said she gets a bit confused sometimes but is otherwise in perfect health

Someone Sold Me A Pitbull Not A Cocker Spaniel

Thats fantastic!! -
Ooh some great pics here! Lucy's official bed is her crate (boring!) which has some carpet in there for her to sleep on. She sleeps in there at night. She also has a lambs wool rug, a 6 seater leather moduler couch, my 4 yo's single bed, my 14 yo's king single & my queen bed!

I'm quite nervy of dogs that I don't know & I worry about conveying it to my dog as well. I've had it happen twice when I've been walking Lucy when dogs have just appeared out of the blue. Both times the dogs were friendly - one just had a sniff & went but the other one kept on following us even though I was ignoring it. I was getting kinda worried as we were approaching a busy road. I ended up stamping my feet loudly & yelling at it to go home & it wandered off. Not sure what I'd do if it were agressive. Probably pick my dog up to protect it & freak out! ETA - I'm more at ease if we're in an off leash area however I still watch her like a hawk. She doesn't really approach other dogs - she's more interestd in their people!
