Fenced Dog Parks And Tips For Long Car Trips?
Topoftheheap replied to PoppyDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
We travel with our 3 CKCS all the time. Is she crate trained already? Ours are quite happy to sit in thier crates for the journey, but they have been doing it since they were babies (it took us 10 hours to come home from thier breeders lol) They travel alot for shows so thier used to at least an hour journey but if the trip is a long one we give them a long lasting treat to keep them occupied and for the younger ones they always have at least one toy in thier crate. My only other advice is to just remember to exercise, water and toilet her regularly. We just stop at the truck stops/rest areas and walk ours on lead around. They have a sniff around, toilet and exercise. We stop about every 2-3 hours, but usually they are more than happy to let us know if they need to get out, and we are happy to oblige. Why were you particularly looking for fenced dog parks? We usually use long leads on our trips and that works fine. If she is coping with two hour trips i can't imagine that you'd have much trouble. Other than that if possible, and only if possible, if you are leaving later in the day give her a chance to exercise or take her for a walk before you go. I find that the less energy they have the happier they are to sleep the time away!!!! But if your leaving early in the morning its a bit harder. Merry Christmas and Happy travels to you and your precious one!!! -
when i was looking for my breed i seriously considered a puli. i love thier temperament, thier personality, and the way they fly over those jumps, as well as thier beautiful coats. i looked at breeders, but then decided that i could not adequately keep up with thier coat work. i thought at first i could of, but then thought responsibly and decided that keeping a puli in show coat would be alot of work. From what i researched they take a lot to wet them down in the bath, but not only that they need to dry in a crate with dryers for 3-4 hours because if you leave the coat damp, not only does it start to stink, it actually rots from the outside. Also the beautiful coat needs daily brushing during the juvenile stage and seperating of the cords as the hair clumps and forms the cords. It can take up to 3 years for thier coat to fully develop and i had visions of me making a mistake and breaking half the cords and having a dog with half a coat missing. Which wouldn't of bothered me if it was only a pet but as i wanted a dog to show it would of. I love the corded coat breeds, i always go and say hello at the shows, and i love seeing them move in the ring. I wish I could of done it, but with the grooming and excercise commitment, and my spinal cord, i just wouldn't of been able to keep up. Sadly.

Thanks for the results mandimoore. Just wondering which show this was? I would think it was Morisset & the black & white terrier would be Bowe's smooth fox terrier, but I could be wrong LOL It was Morisett, sorry i was so tired last night, i was having so many blonde moments lol.

Getting ready for show tommorow - 2 dogs down, 3 to go, and my backs already sore If anyone has a solution, or a cure for groomer's back I would love to know about it!

WOW!!! huge entry!!!

Have gone up and set up. Toy ring is already filling up rather quickly. Was actually suprised by the number of tarps/gazebos already up.

This is only my opinion, but i wouldn't let my four month old pup off lead. I have a five and four month old at the moment and i haven't established a reliable effective recall with either of them, so therefore i wouldn't dare to go off lead outside my house or training grounds until i KNOW they are going to listen to everything i say. I train them day after day in the hope that one day they will be just like the adult dogs in my family (which i know if i continue they will!!) I personally prefer on leash areas, although i love taking them to the off leash beach, i do get nervous with all the other dogs that approach. Even though i can control my dogs, i can't control the hundreds of dogs that we may come across.

we'll be going up early tommorow to set up. hopefully its alright.

As above? or do i just ring the secretary? Is that the ladies name next to the "entries to: " on the show notice?
-
does anyone know what's the earliest time we can set up tarps, gazebos, etc?

Just A Query - Nothing Definite

She is adorable. I am so glad that in looking for a member of thier family they have rescued an animal in need!!! Hope they have many happy years ahead with her -

How long do you have until they have to be changed over to main? All the show dogs we have we're bought as show potential ones, and we've shown them as pups, some from as young as 12 weeks, but i have heard you can change them from limited to main up to a certain age. Just out of curiousity and i know a little off topic, what is the age? and do many breeders do this?

Anyone Got Thier Numbers For Morriset This Weekend?
Topoftheheap replied to Topoftheheap's topic in General Dog Discussion
Toy's are only split on the Sunday, and i have no idea how they have numbered the toy group on the second day!!!! I don't really mind what my number is though! Am so excited. Had final training with the puppies at the oval this afternoon! -
It's on the back of the breed breakdown sheet. When you come in the main drive of the showground go in between the rings on the top of the hill and the slope. Terriers is the second ring on the road on the low side.

I agree with you. Over my lifetime i have had two cats simply disappear from my life. I have no idea what happened to them. And its horrible not knowing. My sister and her husband's two dogs got out, and they were lost for months, then one day he saw them in an old ladies front yard. She screamed at him when he went up and said they were his, and told him that he had lost them (they got out after a fox, who also killed four chickens that night, broke the wire, the dogs chased the intruder out, and never returned, presumed dead despite days of searching!) and she had kept them and looked after them, and it was his loss!

Questions About My New Gsd Pup!
Topoftheheap replied to NewGsdOwner's topic in General Dog Discussion
Good Luck with your new pup. I can't help you with everything, except the training and food, and then again, it is only my humble opinion, which is only that - another opinion to get you totally confused. When i first got my puppies (and before hand) i read up everything possible, researched, researched and did some more research and in the end it all came down to a bit of mum's advice and some common sense. With the training, I started mine on leads and the table and simple obedience at eight weeks. And it was a nightmare. They could only follow really basic stuff, didn't remember it and refused to walk on a lead (at all!) I tried everything i could. And then at twelve weeks, it all just clicked with both of them, as if a magic switch had gone off. I really believe it was the little bit of age, a bit more trust in me, and i had a little more time to asertain myself as pack leader. I think alot of it was my fault, and i was definately overtraining them. I started off with two (very strict) minutes and have now worked up to ten minutes (at four months) and fifteen minutes (at five and a half months). And i do it every single day no matter how much i don't feel like doing it, and try to act the same way every time i interact with them. For example same 'no' sound and same 'positive' sound. Don't stress yourself out like i did (omg there almost three months and won't walk on a lead!!!!!) and don't train him too much. And with food, I agree its best not to change from the breeder's diet too quickly, but if he's not eating it, then he's made his choice. However, don't pander to him too much. My sister's dog is a 'grazer' and very fussy because as a pup she was afraid he was not eating properly. She's now moved out and i have to deal with a fussy eater that takes hours to eat, just in case i change my mind and give him roast chicken. The idea of only leaving it for a set time is great, just be strict with it, and then you should be fine. As for the sort of food, i think the best piece of advice i ever got was to feed the highest quality i could afford and never let anyone make me feel bad for that. Currently I feed my dogs Black Hawk, which is $85 for 20 kg, which i consider great value compared to the other premium brands. And i know the supermarket brands are crap, but when ive been low on money i have fed them Supercoat, and not only did they love it, they didnt keel over and die either. Oh, and with the crate training, the best thing i ever did was to time the whinging. I know this sounds strange, but in the middle of the night, a few minutes of crying can seem like a lifetime. I thought my pup was crying for hours, and felt really bad, but when i timed it, it was actually 12 minutes. The next night seven minutes, Three nights later, no crying or complaining at all. Just remember, to make him sleep where you want him too, you'll have to put up with a few nights without sleep, but obviously you're aware that its worth it in the end. Oh, and just relax, and have fun with your pup, rather than worrying about whether your doing the right thing or not. Im sure you are already!!!!! -

Got both of mine today. If anyone wants breed breakdowns let me know. I know it was only Tuesday, i was just so excited!!!! 35 Cavaliers!!!! And for the Sunday I have no idea how they have worked out the numbers for the toy group!!! -
Got my numbers today for the Morisset Christmas Show (Wyong Canine Club) and it looks like a fairly big show, but have not recieved the one for the Sunday (Gosford). Has anyone got thier numbers for this show yet? Who's going? Am so excited, have not been to a show for 4 whole weeks, and cannot wait to get into the ring!

The ventilation in the soft crates are not great. We use one occasionally out of desperation and the dogs get quite hot in them even in air conditioned comfort of the car, and under the shade of a gazebo. Plus we have only used it a couple of times, and it is already showing signs of wear. I wouldn't really recommend one for long term use. We use the black metal crates at home, and there great. We cover them when there cool, and they feel nice and safe, in fact they love thier 'dens' so much, sometimes they won't even come out!!!

What Small Breed Do You Suggest
Topoftheheap replied to charley101's topic in General Dog Discussion
I think a pug!!!! tibbies are great (i sure couldn't stop at one, but they are so so so smart, and independant, that recall is almost impossible, i don't really trust mine off lead because if they are in the mood to please they will do it no worries, but if there in a cheeky mood they are off!!!) pugs are confident, are not princessey in any way, and ive never heard them really bark at shows. I would say a CKCS, but they can also have problems with confidence.
