An exhibitor in Victoria received a 12 months suspension of membership and a $300 fine for "failing to display good sportsmanship and conduct". Her name appeared in the January Dogs Vic magazine.

Rivalry isn't uncommon between two puppies of the same sex who are also of a similar age, however yours are still very young, normally it doesn't surface until they're a bit older. I always recommend that puppy buyers get one of each sex. However two puppies the same age are going to be a handful regardless of sex.

Is the dog he lives with another male? Some dogs have a tendency towards same sex aggression and he may be better living with a female. Feeding the older dog first will do nothing, the 'behaviourist' doesn't sound very competent, is he/she from one of the franchises? If he is rehomed make sure that the new owners are fully cognisant of his problems and are experienced enough to deal with them.

Looking To Purchase Grooming Scissors
Miranda replied to Roishana's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I love Roseline scissors, but I don't know where to get them in Australia, mine are 10 years old. I also have some Jaguar scissors which are good. -
Your puppy was one of a litter and he was competing for his food with his siblings, now that there is no competition there is plenty of food and he also knows that if he doesn't eat what he's given you will offer him something better. Do what Sandra says

Yes I'll be there singing showdog, but only if I win of course, if I lose I'll storm out of the ring, rubbish the winning dogs, accuse the winning handler of sleeping with the judge and then slink off home to wash the dye out of my dogs

That's when you know you've got a really good dog lappiemum, a BIS winner for sure

What sport does have a level playing field, even competitive swimming and athletics involves drug taking and by the time they've discovered a test for one drug, another is being used. I see plenty of young people enjoying dog shows and the fact that the children you took with you weren't interested because of 'the cheating that occurs' doesn't mean that all young people feel the same way. I've never actually heard anyone say that they don't want to be involved with dog showing because of the cheating, because of rudeness maybe, but never because of cheating.

I agree with this statement. It would be great if the decent majority to tell the apparent few where to go... I can and will tell people where to go if they attack me personally, I just didn't want to say so on DOL, might spoil my image
-
No one is intimating that cheating doesn't occur, but it certainly isn't as common as a lot of people like to think and for someone like yourself who doesn't even participate to make sweeping comments about a sport (or 'sport' as you like to refer to it) based on what you read on an internet forum and hear from friends is pretty poor form.
-
What sort of cheating are you referring to JB? How many instances of cheating have you personally seen or experienced at a dog show? i have seen dogs that were dyed which is not allowed and dogs which were powdered again not allowed and i have friends who show and i read this forum so whether i see it personally or not it happens. So apart from seeing a couple a dogs that may have been dyed and another couple with powder in their coats you have no actual experience of cheating at all and all the authoritative posts you make regarding breeders and showing are gleaned from a few visits to dog shows, gossip from your 'friends that show' and reading posts on this forum. Actually JB you would probably fit in at a dog show very well because repeating gossip and putting forward opinions based on nothing more than anecdotal evidence is another occupation frequently enjoyed by the sorts of people I mentioned in my previous post.

Well JB, in that case all forms of competition will die out because wherever there is competition there will always be rudeness and bitchiness, cats, horses, ballroom dancing, whatever, I think someone even mentioned chess in a previous post. Let's face it most people compete to win and there are certain personality types who can't handle losing, instead of looking at themselves and asking 'how can I improve my performance?', they blame anything and everything except themselves and vent their disappointment and frustration on others. In a sport like dog showing where there are a large number of competitors and comparatively few awards, losers will always greatly outnumber winners and obviously there will be instances of bad sportsmanship. I find your question quite difficult to answer Megz, probably because I've been involved for a very long time and I'm completely at home in a dog showing environment. To be honest I don't notice much rudeness at dog shows, but if I do see some disenchanted exhibitor having a whinge I just treat it as part of the entertainment offered on the day . It's usually the same people, most of the other exhibitors know who they are and their rantings are largely ignored except by their cronies who are just as bad as they are, really they're a bit of a joke. My advice to newbies would be to go to the show, take your dogs in the ring and enjoy your day out win or lose. Mix with people you like and ignore the rest and if someone makes a nasty comment laugh it off, don't take it seriously. However I do agree with a previous poster who commented that some people just aren't cut out for it, if you're hypersensitive, take things to heart and are easily upset, competitive sport is best avoided.

Most Effective For Flea Treatment?!?
Miranda replied to rivergem's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Are you treating the cats because they will be carrying them too even though they may not show symptoms. I don't have fleas here, but I've used Advantage occasionally in the past and have found it to be very good. -
One of my dogs suffered mild heat stroke after chasing birds on a warm, humid day, temperature was only mid 20's. He was panting profusely, began to stagger and tried to vomit. Luckily there was water nearby and I was able to cool him down, he recovered in about 5 minutes. He wasn't running for very long, but it came on very quickly, my fault entirely for allowing him to do it. It was a good lesson to learn.

Advice On How To Care For Clipper Blades
Miranda replied to meluchja's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I only use Oster blades, I would think that a universal blade that's around a third of the price wouldn't be as good, but then I've never used one. BTW $90 is horrendously expensive for an Oster 4F, Clipper World here in Melbourne have them for $55.95. -
I have a bitch who has done this all her life and she's nine years old now, it's never done her any harm. I try to keep an eye on her and chase her off if she finds poo, but she usually manages to eat some on her daily run. If it worries you keep her on leash or use a muzzle, otherwise just make sure she's wormed regularly. Macrolone does make them extremely hungry and this will certainly be contributing to the problem.

Puppy Barking ~ When Playing With Toys & At Objects In The House
Miranda replied to perla's topic in Puppy Chat
This is normal puppy behaviour. Lots of adult dogs also vocalise when playing. -
I also have Roseline and they're great. I also have Jaguar and they're ok, but not as good as the Roselines.

A dog I bred was bitten by a brown snake a couple of years ago and survived with no ill effects. She was at the vet within 15 minutes of being bitten and after treatment was kept on a drip for a couple of days. Her owner was instructed to keep her very quiet for a month once she returned home. ETA she was bitten on one of her flews.

Is A Blue Stafford Breeder Unethical?
Miranda replied to mr.mister's topic in General Dog Discussion
I would consider anyone deliberately breeding for blue unethical. -
Feeding Two Dogs Bones In A Shared Yard
Miranda replied to Sam the man's topic in General Dog Discussion
I feed all my dogs separately and that includes bones. They always eat the whole bone (beef brisket), but if they didn't I would never allow them to bury any part of a bone in the yard, it's just too risky. -
Neonates lack a shivering reflex and this doesn't begin to develop until the puppies are about 6/8 days old, therefore it is important to regulate the temperature of the environment until the pups are 2/3 weeks of age. However the puppies are most at risk of hypothermia during the first week. Puppies can also suffer if temperatures are too high, but are able to pant even when very young.

I whelp my puppies in a small room off the kitchen and sleep with them for two weeks.
