In an off lead park in Ipswich someone has spread dog meat laced with thumbtacks through an off lead dog park. Some people are just really revolting !! The article is in the abc news sorry not sure how to put link up on my ipad.

I have just thought of another dog. A friend of mine had a little dog Bundy that went everywhere with him. My friend had to go to hospital and a couple of weeks later passed away. Bundy was with other friends when his owner passed he apparently started to howl and that night Bundy passed away.

Not much to add to what has already been said except that Im a DSW and I use my dogs at work with all types of intellectual disabilities the benefits a dog can bring can be really awesome to see, but it is important the person wants to interact with the animal and the dog has a safe place to go to if need be. Several of our guys with severe autism have dogs at home and the relationship is great but their carers are mindful of both the person's and dog's needs and behaviour.

A Greyhound would fit most of your criteria. If you go to a rescue organisation they should be able to help you find the right dog as the dogs have spent time with a foster carer and they can tell you what they are like. GAP (Greyhound Adoption Program) of whatever state you are in is a good start. The cost of keeping them greatly depends on what food you feed them. I do recommend feeding grain free dry food as when I changed mine over they looked so much better. A 15kg bag lasts me two weeks, Im feeding two Greys and an ACD, but I also add meat, chicken or fish and bones. Hope this is of some help.

That is faithful, it is amazing what they can pick up re dog saving neighbour. I had a cocky Cecil who used to just hung around the house, he was walking around the edge of the above ground pool and a black shouldered kite decided he was going to be dinner. I was at the other end of the yard and started to run toward the pool as it was in it's dive. My GSD Sassy somehow worked out what I was attempting to do and took off ahead of me and jumped up beside Cecil to "get " the kite. It turned out its dive (it was only about two metres above Cecil) meanwhile Cecil was totally oblivious to the kite and as Sassy jumped up she frightened him and he fell in the pool. I got him out and he gave Sassy a tongue lashing as only a cocky can lol.

I've just been reading stories about faithful dogs and it made me think of a Greyhound that I rescued and rehomed to an elderly gentleman that had recently lost his Dalmatian. Cyan had been to two other homes and they hadn't worked out, not the fault of Cyan as she was the one of the gentlest sweetest dogs that I had ever rescued. I had her for about 3 years on and off until I found Bill (the elderly gentleman) he adored Cyan (who he renamed Skye) and she him. He would ring me every week and we would chat for up to a couple of hours and he would give me photos when I called in to visit. Anyway unfortunately one day Bill passed away and Skye turned into Cujo she wouldn't let anyone near his body except the ambos but they weren't allowed to move him. The local ranger caught her and held her while they took the body away, the ranger told me Skye started making a howling type noise he said it was the saddest noise he has ever heard. He ended up taking her to his home as she had touched him so much, rather than put her in the pound. I was informed by some people who knew that I had given Skye to Bill that Bill had passed, so after a frantic search I got her back. At the time I was absolutely full and really couldn't keep another dog long term so GAP Vic came to the rescue and a week later she had a lovely home with a couple in Melbourne. Does anyone else have a faithful dog story?

There is room for improvement in the other states but instead of ending the industry why not try to fix it. Already the "scare " that the NSW participants have undergone has seen improvements happen and the good aspects of the sport are continuing. People not getting proactive and just sitting on their hands isn't going to see things improve and as I've said many times before I don't think shutting it down will help the existing dogs, 10000's of dogs will have nowhere to go, the reforms in NSW help dogs now and in the future and also the good folk in the industry. To be PC it could be seen as discrimination.

Any/all where the wellbeing of the animal relies on humans

Any that have people who do the wrong thing by their animals even if those people are a small minority.

If we call for the demise of one animal industry because of a bad minority isnt it only fair that all animal industries/sports should have the same treatment. I personally think that way of thinking is flawed as Corvus said why punish a majority for the sins of a minority, why not just do something about it to prohibit that minority doing what they do, as has been done in NSW.

It has been passed and the committee that is responsible for upholding the regulations is made up of a majority of non participants in the industry.

Exactly we can be so stupid just appease our egos. There is money involved but they have just blown the opportunity to utilise their skills in the future when they are past being athletes.

That's what everyone said about the industry in NSW but it has happened, because of people being the dog's advocates. Time will tell if it does the industry harm, but as I have said before they have some of the strictest regs of any animal industry. There will still be unscrupulous people involved just as there is in ALL animal sports, because that's some humans for you.

Audits are part of many service providers work life for the very reason people don't self regulate, it keeps them honest. We have work safe inspectors because people don't self regulate, it is a big part of life in general why should the people in this industry be treated differently?

As a member of the public complaining you hold a lot more influence because they fear a bad reputation. They have gone back to business as usual because they see it as a storm in a teacup because that is how it being treated. All trainers want to win but if the owner pays they generally aren't too worried they are still making money, in my experience.

Yes what has happened in NSW does need to be extended to other states, but if enough people make the right noises in the right places it can. You are in a good position as a member of the public with this information to do this. The corruption in the industry is still a bit of a hot topic. The industry doesn't need trainers it needs dogs on tracks to be sustainable if this trainer was banned the owners could just take their dog to another trainer. I'm guessing he doesn't own all the dogs he races?

With the legislation owners wont be able to euth their dogs, not without a good reason verified by a vet and possibly numbers will drop even more as each pup will cost the owner more to produce because of the bond.

Exactly couldnt agree more, but this way a whole lot of existing dogs get to live.

This industry could possibly be subjected to some of the toughest regulation / scrutiny of any animal sport, if the government agrees with the recommendations put forward by the industry itself, see the link I put up in the other thread. These measures will virtually eliminate wastage and cheats will be punished. Drone surveillance and random inspections are very likely to occur.

Why is dog racing and animal fighting being concluded as parallels the two sports are eons apart. One is about damage or death happening every time the animal participates, the other is about the dog running??? Doing something it intrinsically enjoys not many pet dogs can make that claim.

Did you read the link I put up? If the reforms go through wastage will be minimal, unless the 100s of thousands of trainers in Aus can find as many corrupt vets, which we all know just wouldn't happen. The percentage of positive swabs they get is very small now so I doubt there are plenty with criminal connections, but I'm not denying some must obviously. If it did go underground the wastage % would skyrocket not to mention the atrocious conditions they would need to endure.
