  1. A Crate each, don't change them around, may be a better bet than beds, other wise it's just training. Never let them get away with marking inside. 100% control needed, 3 seconds is too late. Chemical neutering, which only lasts for 6 months, for the underdog will stop them competing. Best.
  2. I knew one English springer bitch who did it occasionally. The usual block nose and push the nose down onto the chest area fixed it every time. Some Cavaliers are prone to it too. Best
  3. I always used Talcum too until I read the research done on babies inhaling Talc.... Baby Wet wipes around the face, ears and underneath helps to keep the smell down between baths. Washing their collars at bath time helps too.
  4. King Charles Spaniels are similar to Cavaliers but have squashed faces and tend to be smaller. They may snore more but that's debatable some nights with my boy. My Cavalier is a 4½ year old boy, love him to bits and he lives with DH & me in our Motor home traveling around NZ. (We are now retired) Feed the best food possible, bi products, generic meats, colours, preservatives etc can and usually do cause eye staining and allergy problems. High grain content food is great for chickens not dogs ....... I home cook his meals but make sure they are balanced via a dog nutrition spreadsheet and use sites like http://www.nutritiondata.com/index.html to check. I also have ZiwiPeak food and treats on hand. Cavaliers can have heart problems so please keep slim & fit. Use a small food dish :D As they are spaniels, long walks, fetching sticks from streams, swimming and running on beaches keeps them tired & well behaved They are not just soft, beautiful lap dogs. Obedience training is always a good idea and they learn quickly. Quite a few do agility and enjoy it as do their owners. They are people dogs, if you have to leave a Cavalier alone during the work day get two or at least a cat to keep the him company. They are not outside kennel dogs. A snood is a necessity to keep their ears out of their food and NO coat trimming is allowed for showing. I use a good metal comb and run it through his coat & ears most days ~ I don't use a brush except for a quick tidy up before going into the show ring. A crate is worth is weight in gold, great as their safe place inside the house and tied down in the car when going out. That's all I can think of at the moment, hope it helps.
  5. Yes. I fed ZiwiPeak and was very happy with it. Although I now cook my dogs meals myself ZiwiPeak is always in the cupboard for the odd time I forget to defrost a meal, or just for a change. It is Air dried raw food rather than kibble, looks like jerky and the dogs love it. No grains or fillers in the mix. Doglet's favourite is the Venison & Green lipped mussel but the lamb one comes a close second.
  6. Extended Recall on Nutro canned food. 3rd May Dec/06/09 to Jan/24/10 Kitten Beef/Chicken 24x3oz 3oz 79105-35203 Can Dec/06/09 to Jan/24/10 Kitten Chicken/Oceanfish 24x3oz 3oz 79105-38101 Can Dec/06/09 to Jan/24/10 Kitten Tuna/Chicken 24x3oz 3oz 79105-35204 Can The news that Nutro has been bought by Mars was interesting with the lawsuits being organised in the US against Nutro, Menu et al by pet owners with sick and/or dead pets. Mars also snapped up Greenies last year when the maker was struggling with bad PR after some highly publicized dog deaths and subsequent lawsuit. Canned / pouched Nutro not available in Aussie? sure is in New Zealand and the EU
  7. Personally I'd leave most USA produced food well alone until the recalls have stopped. I must admit I received a very prompt email response from Nutro New Zealand answering all my questions about the recalled Nutro wet products and what was going to happen to the stock piled contaminated food here in NZ.
  8. Royal Canin have decided to voluntarily remove the following dry pet food products that contain rice protein concentrate due to the presence of a melamine derivative. ROYAL CANIN SENSIBLE CHOICE® (available in pet specialty stores nationwide) Dry Dog Food - Chicken Meal & Rice Formula Senior - Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Puppy - Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Adult - Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Senior - Rice & Catfish Meal Formula Adult ROYAL CANIN VETERINARY DIET™ (available only in veterinary clinics) Dry Dog Food - Canine Early Cardiac EC 22™ - Canine Skin Support SS21™ Dry Cat Food - Feline Hypoallergenic HP23™ We are taking this proactive stance to voluntarily recall these products to avoid any confusion for our customers about which Royal Canin USA products are safe and which products may be affected. Pet owners should immediately stop feeding their pets the Royal Canin USA dry pet food products listed above. Pet owners should consult with a veterinarian if they are concerned about the health of their pet. No other Royal Canin diets are affected by this recall and CONTINUE TO BE safe for pets to eat. In addition, Royal Canin USA will no longer use any Chinese suppliers for any of our vegetable proteins. http://www.petconnection.com/index.php That makes three that have recalled due to rice protein concentrate contamination: Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin. We still don’t know who the other two companies were who received the contaminated rice protein powder - and the FDA knows and won’t say. As some have suggested that I have some Pet food affiliations I don't. I'm just a 61 year old gran of 5 with one Cavalier and an interest in the crap used to make so called good quality pet food. Bottom Line, I don't want to see any more pets poisoned.
  9. Home Cooked. The kibble has been dumped, the US recall and their 4,000 dead pets has put me off commercial dog food for life. My four legged mate deserves the best I can provide.
  10. Just a dog thing I'm looking after a dozen cavs this week, all fed in separate areas and meal time doesn't last long at all. Start picking up the dishes as soon as the last full one is put down. No digestive problems at all. It's normal for dogs to gulp down their food, they only tear it into a size they can swallow. We start food digestion in our mouths with saliva, our dogs don't. Now back to the cav cuddles. :D
  11. Couple of New Recalls guys Del Monte wet food and treats Purina wet food. Still only Hills Prescription Diet m/d Feline DRY food so far.
  12. Menu don't make Dry food. BUT: Menu did made Nutro's WET food with wheat gluten. The latest one is Hill's DRY Prescription diet for cats.
  13. Sorry The best one I've found: http://www.petconnection.com/index.php
  14. Next news bulletin: Hills Pet Nutrition recalls dry cat food Updated Fri. Mar. 30 2007 7:19 PM ET CTV.ca News Staff Officials in the U.S. now believe contaminated wheat gluten distributed by an unnamed U.S. company may have spread to dry pet food, despite assurances the problem was contained. Hill's Pet Nutrition, a division of Colgate-Palmolive Co., recalled its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry cat food on Friday. The food included wheat gluten from the same supplier used by Menu Foods; however, Menu Foods is not affected by the latest recall because the company only manufactures wet pet food products. It's not the cheap stuff
  15. In addition to the wet food recall from Science diet, Iams, Euk, Nutro and many, many more. Dry food is now being tested. Personally I'd stop feeding any US / Canadian pet food till this mess is sorted out. Washington Post: The Food and Drug Administration has identified contaminated wheat gluten from China as the likely cause of poisoned pet food that has sickened a number of dogs and cats, and the agency is investigating to determine whether dry pet foods have also been affected, officials said today. In a news conference, Stephen F. Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, said FDA and independent laboratories have found a chemical called melamine in pet food samples, imported wheat gluten and urine and tissue from diseased pets. He said melamine is used in fertilizer in Asia and in plastic products but is not registered as a fertilizer in the United States. “Melamine is an ingredient that should not be in pet food at any level,” Sundlof said. Nor does it have any approved use in food for humans. He said the FDA is not aware that any of the contaminated wheat gluten went into human food, but said he could not confirm this “with 100 percent certainty.” Sundlof and FDA investigative officials said a company that was found to have imported the contaminated wheat gluten manufactures dry pet food as well as “wet” or “moist” food similar to that previously identified as the source of the illnesses. However, they said, investigators have not yet determined whether any of the wheat gluten has been used in any dry pet food. The officials declined to name the pet food company or the supplier pending the outcome of the investigation.
  16. Thanks for the nutro link. No recall in NZ but it was shipped. Check the lists of Countries. As previously reported ~ the recalled Nutro food is being stockpiled in NZ warehouses.
  17. Maybe not but are you 100% sure of All States and all private importers? No doubt many Australian dog owners would like to be informed about how the pet food manufactures who do supply Australia behave. Euk, Iams and Nutro were the only ones I mentioned all three supply Australia with food made in the US & Canada. There is a New Zealand part of Dogz on Line as there is a UK part. The forum links all three together.
  18. Euk / Iams have said in their latest eMail that the wet pouched food on sale in New Zealand, which is made in the same Menu plant but supposedly outside the recall dates is OK to feed to Dogs & Cats. I for one am finding it difficult to believe anything they say. Euk/Iams sell their so called premium food in all the Vet Clinics here and obviously get at least some of it made with the cheapest stuff they can get their hands on along with the supermarket brands...... I've not found Nutro's wet pouched food, also made by Menu, on the shelves yet in NZ ~ they were stockpiling it in warehouses, hopefully it will be sent back or dumped. Doglet get's all home cooked meals now, it's safer if nothing else.
  19. Euk. Iams and Nutro are doing their own recall of the wet pouched food. All made by Menu Foods. Found Euk and Iams wet pouched food in a pet shop here in NZ yesterday... Not Happy. Received a generic email reply from Euk / Iams AU / NZ still waiting for actual answers. a site that's keeping count of sick and dead dogs & cats: http://www.petconnection.com/index.php PS if you don't want to eat food from China check your peanut butter.
  20. Female sheep shearers can buy special wool proof bras. Some sheep grow wool more like hair. Stock and station agents or similar might be able to help.
  21. Rocky it's great that you have found a way to help your dog. I know there are vitamins etc that humans cannot digest when Liquid Parafin, a laxative,is given. I've searched but I can't find the info. Google has let me down for the first time It may be safer not to give it too often.
  22. I'll second the Virgin cocnut oil, wonderful stuff for man and dog. Copra is normally what is left after the oil has been removed from the coconut meat although some call the dried cocnut meat copra too.
  23. Alpha roll or no Alpha roll? ~ farmers all use it and their dogs work for them. I have used it for many years with all my dogs (from 8 weeks old) incl. Chows, Obedience Champion Springers & yes my Cavalier. Whatever, groom your dog on a table or bench laying on its side or back so you can groom the underside of it. Problem solved. You are the boss and the dog is on it's back. Roll it over to groom the other side... trim claws at the same time. Best
  24. My 4 year old Cavalier boy has been given a couple of Raw chicken necks for breakfast since he was 8 weeks old. I do freeze them for at least a week to kill off some of the bacteria the same as I freeze all raw meat fed. Hang on to one end of the neck till they get the idea of crunching it up. I wouldn't risk feeding them if other dogs are around loose as they could gulp them down. Even so the dog's stomach acid is strong enough to digest bones. Dogs can't chew, their jaws only go up & down not sideways ;-) His breeder feeds raw necks at odd times to all her cavs. My main reasons for feeding them is that they keep his teeth clean and his anal glands empty with the added advantage that they are good for him. I've not found a cavalier pup yet who didn't crunch up a chicken neck immediately and then look around for more. Feeding whole chicken frames is an option but rather messy with a long coated dog, snoods only cover ears Safe food handling practice goes without saying. Best
