Cavaliers are lovely dogs but only some lines have easy care coats, mine have needed combing at least a couple of time a week... My late boy had a lovely coat.. his 2.5 year old grandson is similar..

The Queen and family have always used homeopathic medicine.. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/news/11739270/Queens-physician-calls-for-more-homeopathy-on-NHS.html Why change what works and go along with the Multinational drug companies. About as sensible as believing the Vets text books on what to feed your dog ~ they are written by Multinational Pet food companies.

I also use Moth balls, keeps the cats away and also has the advantage of getting rid of the earwigs which were decimating my clematis.

We travelled around NZ in our motorhome/camper for 7 years. Our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel came too. His metal crate was securely tied down on the middle jump seat at the front with the crate door opening into the Motorhome. He had a 360º view :) He loved it and we loved having him around. The only downside is that your dog gets used to having you with him 24/7 for years. As Cavs have been bred for generations as companion dogs it was a good fit.

You could put Vicks vapour rub on the lead, it generally stops pups chewing whatever you put it on. You could also get a light chain lead with a handle. Don't forget the praise when pup doesn't chew the lead. General rule ¾ praise ¼ commands. Have fun with your pup.

Not sure just how big or agile your dog is but maybe the laundry window or a back bedroom window with ramps if necessary. Best if top hung opening out from the sill. I have a CKCS, a large cat door suits him :)

Small multicoloured plastic balls are fairly normal in Blood & Bone fertiliser. Cattle / Sheep ear tags are not taken off before animal parts are rendered down at the freezing works. I'd expect them to be in beef or lamb based kibble too.

A Few Questions Re: Routine / Annual Vet Check Ups
Ashka replied to Scottsmum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Most of NZ is similar temperature to east coast NSW. Auckland is the same as Sydney roughly. Invercargill is cold but not as cold as Canberra. None of NZ gets as hot as Adelaide... So do I get my dog heart worm or not? I thought it was more about mozzies. And Australia - anywhere there is water - I've found mozzies. Or they find me. There are Mossies in NZ ~ The mossie has to bite an infected dog before it can transfer the heart worm larva to your dog. There are NO infected dogs in New Zealand so NO Heart Worm. -

New Zealand Normal Vacc Vanguard 5 lasts for three years & most good / modern boarding kennels are OK with that. plus Annual Kennel Cough for Boarding kennels. NO Paralysis ticks. NO Heart worm. No snakes :) Fleas seem to be world wide. Comfortis and Nextgard available often cheaper online .. http://www.myvet.co.nz/dog.html?p=8 Best. -
Congratulations :)

Which Combo Would Be The Least Gamey/fatty/ "red"
Ashka replied to Scottsmum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
On the list of foods No 3 would be my choice with as good a kibble as you can afford at this stage. Bush tailed possum makes for good human food pies & pet food. You could try him on the tinned Possum dog food first. (Much prefer them being eaten than poisoned with 1080.) Hope you are settling in OK. :) -
Could cut the time down to less than an hour using a good 15 psi Pressure cooker. Whole end of lay chooks and left over ducks after duck shooting season make for great dog / puppy food after an hour. Tough birds 90 minutes to be sure. Watch carefully for shot with the ducks.. You get the broth, dogs get the rest.. :)

It's been near enough 20 years since I was actively involved but there are a few in Auckland on this page. http://www.doglinks.co.nz/trainers_NZ/trainers.htm A list of Obedience clubs is on the NZKC site.

Some dogs with constantly wet lip folds get what is sometimes known as lip fold dermatitis ( by some older..OK old dog owners.) Smells as if something has died in there several weeks ago and yes you can smell it from meters away. Cleaning the folds well with Peroxide of Hydrogen at normal chemist strength on a soft cloth every day usually clears it up in a week to 10 days. Often a fairly regular problem with wet mouthed older dogs. Just something to consider if teeth & digestion are OK.

There are a few around ;) BISS AUST SUP CH Redcrest Royal Treasure (Imp NZ). Hilton is one of his sons too.

Orijen fed here, Grain Free, made in Canada. 7 years travelling around NZ in a Motorhome made raw pretty well impossible. Small fridge & off grid.:) My old boy is still trucking on, slowly at times but still likes chasing and killing a small red laser light. 8.4 kg and still trots in a dead straight line. Took a quick photo today as he will be 12 years old tomorrow. Going to miss him so much when his time comes. Owned, worked & shown many breeds over the last fifty years but this little man has to be one of the best..

Update on the little girl. The family of a seven-year-old girl mauled by dogs in Murupara on Monday want to thank the driver of a red car who helped get the little girl to hospital. Japanese girl Sakurako Uehara is in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Middlemore Hospital following Monday's attack by four Staffordshire bull terriers. (Note: Most reports state Xs not pure bred dogs.) Sakurako was bitten more than 100 times, a team of doctors said this afternoon. Plastic surgeon Dr Zac Moaveni said the Sakurako was suffering from more than 100 bites to her face, limbs, and almost "every part of her body". Sakurako was conscious throughout the "horrific and sustained" attack, and now faces years of operations which will involve the transfer of tissue from other parts of her body.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Grooming Requirement
Ashka replied to Reese&Mia's topic in General Dog Discussion
All the best slznck.. Cavs are well worth waiting for. I only use a rounded toothed metal comb as brushes can go over rather than through the coat.. I learnt on my English Springers & Chow Chows. :) Regular combing also cuts down on the amount of fur left on the floor. No coat trimming allowed when showing but I now keep his feet trimmed. Sadly he's getting older and slowing down a bit now at 10 and a half. They are bright little dogs, easy to obedience train and show train, they can actually stay on the floor rather than on the bed or furniture if you can ignore the big brown eyes. Crate training is very useful and becomes their safe place. We are now all retired & travel around NZ in a Motorhome, Ashka travels in his wire crate in the front between us and has a safe 360º view. My old boy.. NZ Ch. Redcrest Royal Command.. doesn't seem that long ago when we look home a little 8 week old pup.. -
Dry Food That Does Not Contain Wheat, Corn Or Soy?
Ashka replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have been using grain free Orijen (Canadian) in NZ with great results. Hope you can get it there too. -
Animates need a reality check. Damn stupid idea. The staff also need animal common sense training, although most of the staff are good some are just plain stupid. Last time I walked my dog through Animates a large female staff member rushed over to grab my Cavalier just cus she had one like him at home. Scared the shit out of him. Other staff members had patted him without a problem. He's an eight year old show dog and generally loves everyone. Note: I had him in there to try on a new travel harness.

Either that or the dog will be put down by the owner or the neighbors.

Only one piece a day because of the heavy metal contamination, especially Mercury. The higher in the food chain the more Mercury, large sharks are at the top if you ignore humans. We catch and eat some of the smaller 4 ~ 5 kg species off the beach in the lower South Island, elephant fish, rig, blue boy etc. Not all members of the shark family are huge and rare.

Dogs are the intermediary hosts between sheep / goats and humans of Hydatid ~ the cysts can kill you. They can grow anywhere in the body, brain, eyes..... Freezing raw flesh for a week before feeding makes it safe but no amount of freezing will make contaminated offal safe to feed raw. Dronal Plus is one of the wormers which will kill hydatid worms in dogs. Not all will. Raw feeding used to be illegal, feeding raw offal may still be illegal in some areas.
