That's why I do it!! If the two ball system isn't working then use the K9 Force method of putting dog on long lead, throw the ball, reel the dog in and get the ball back. This is a method that you can always win and the dog never gets to keep the ball.

I was just about to reply to this and got pipped at the post. I used Tomymcs version to start. I have also used a long line which is fantastic for fetch and recall. Ecollar is of course, the best method for fetch......hee hee Tilly

How To Stop My Dog Reacting To A Little Dog
BrunoBella replied to BrunoBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
That would have been a big pain . He probably thought your dogs were less likely to kill his :D . I was abused one day while walking bella past a house, she was pulling so I stopped and made her sit. A dog from the house where I stopped barked and a guy leaned out the window and swore himself black and blue. How dare you train your dog on my yard and upset my dogs ."I'm on the nature strip". Don't you ever walk past my house again!!! rolls eyes - Of course, I had to make a point of walking past very slowly every day just ot annoy him. I've have tried to start conversations before. I will try and catch her and get the dogs to meet and I will tell her its dangerous to tether the dog to the pram. -
How To Stop My Dog Reacting To A Little Dog

I'll see how I go with her training first as its a good opportunity to work on that. She has improved heaps from me calling her back everytime she barks. Might try the rental in a few weeks if I still have a problem. We have neighbours who have a pitbull that barks all day. On the weekend they got him a staffy to keep him company, now they have two dogs that bark all day . Bella doesn't bark with them or with the neighbourhood dogs (after a bit of training) so I'm hoping all my good work means I will not get any more complaints. -

Excellent plan but its a rental so that won't get me anywhere. I suppose I could put out an arrangement of planting pots..... -
Help Needed For Noisy Dogs In Brisbane
BrunoBella replied to ScruffyMax's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9 Force sells them on his website. He says they are more than 95% succesfull so I think they should do the trick. If you send him an email he will advise on the best collars for your dogs. Xaube you must have a dog in the 5% that it doesn't work on. Good luck -
Congratulations deelee It only took me two years to learn the correct timing and to stay calm at all times. Gardenias = leccy fence. Wouldn't be without mine.

How To Stop My Dog Reacting To A Little Dog
BrunoBella replied to BrunoBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
The woman comes past everyday, sometimes twice a day. It's usually in the morning while I'm inside having breakfast. Problem is that I'm not there and I haven't been using the ecollar till morning tea time. Will put it on as soon as I let the dogs out tomorrow. I thought about moving my electric fence outside to stop her from walking past but I think that's illegal. I will also put my water soaker near the front door so I'm ready for her. I might tell the woman to look out for the snake I saw on Saturday. That might make her hot foot to the other side of the road and make her stop having her parent meeting at my front gate. She's definitely stubborn -
I think you'll find the adjustable leads are a problem. Very hard to teach a dog to walk nicely on one of those. I would get a standard lead for walking. When you are training your dog to do something new, you always start with what's easiest for them to not do the activity wrong. Then you add distance and distractions. In the example of your dog, it would be easiest to walk him with your hand holding the lead 30cm from his head so he can't sniff the ground. You reward his walking without sniffing and do this for a while. Once he has that, you can make the lead a little longer and so forth.
-
Russ ren, how long is your lead? A longer lead will allow your dog to pull you around a lot more so changing the length of the lead will give you more control while you're training. I walk my two on a 6 ft leash. This is what I did to stop them pulling sideways. When we start on our walk I hold the leash so they have to walk right beside me. Once they are walking nicely, I let them have more lead. Everytime they pulled, I shortened the lead and made them walk right beside me again. On the long lead, I let my dogs sniff where they want as long as they keep and and don't put tension on the lead. They have both been doing this for about 5 months now and walking two big dogs on lead is a pleasure. If your dog is pulling forward then turning around works. If they are pulling sideways keeping walking helps heaps. I also change my speed when I'm training, go from grandma shuffle to a sprint, this helps the dogs stay focussed on me. Have fun

;) Poor gardenias. They always know how to pick the expensive plants Well done with the walking . I found it took a few days to get the dogs to realise the new rules were here to stay and to behave on walks.

Can You Teach And Old Dog New Tricks?
BrunoBella replied to Monsindara's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Welcome to the forum :D We need a bit more information. What sort of dog is this? Some breeds have a high prey instinct and are more likely to kill a cat. Whatever sort of dog this is, I suggest your friend hires a professional dog behaviourist to solve this problem. In the meantime keeping the animals separated is a good idea. -

What on earth? Surely the council won't take that kind of complaint seriously? It's normal for dogs to bark at people walking past the house, especially when they come by that close! Unfortunately, in brisbane all you have to do to get the council to visit is have one person complain that your dogs made them feel uncomfortable. The council guy came over to check us out and was very sympathetic. We've met before because I had complaints at my last house from people in a block of units that my dogs run around the backyard! I had just moved to the new house to get away from the block of units. Once council guy realised we had met before he said "I'll tell them you are working on it". Bella learns much faster than this woman :D -

Thanks for the advice Tonymc The dominant bitch theory was just a thought. You don't think this would be the problem? I will continue with what I've been doing with the other dogs walking past and wait for this to work. BP -
Perfect Recall Training Using Ecollar
BrunoBella replied to BrunoBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I forgot to update about saturday's adventure On saturday the dogs were barking in the backyard which they never do. I went out to investigate and found them both sitting at the fence barking at a huge python (carpet snake) balanced on top of the fence. I thanked the dogs profusely for finding our first snake. I stimmed them and called them back. I then left them inside while the snaked wended its way up one of our trees. I was very proud cause they found the snake but did not try and attack it . It was very big, I wouldn't have attacked it either! I am now doing bed checks as I don't know where the carpet snake sleeps at night :D -
Perfect Recall Training Using Ecollar
BrunoBella replied to BrunoBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yesterday I took the dogs to my sisters house for the day. They have two aviaries which bella had decided to attack - she jumps on them - despite all my efforts to train her out of it. As a result, bella spent our last 2 visits there tied on a long lead alternating with episodes of being walked on a long lead. Sunday I let bella offlead and waited for her to try her attack on the aviary (this did not take long). As soon as she touched I stimmed her and called her back. She raced back to me. We repeated the exercise three times and I was ready to keep practicing but that was it. She ran off to play and left the aviaries alone :D . For the rest of the day, I recalled her if she came within 3m of the aviary. How easy is that -
I have one person who regularly walks past my house with a three wheeler pram, a child and a little skinny dog (sort of like an italian greyhound). Every day they walk past my house, Bella barks at them and I call her back. My front verandah is about 2 m from the front fence and the footpath is 1m wide. 99% of people walk past on the road, this person walks on my little 1m of nature strip. The person has once rang the council to complain about bella barking at her when she walks past (one to three times a day) and I've had a threatening letter from someone who could be her. I have stopped bella from barking at nearly every dog that walks past by training her and recalling her and this is the only one she still reacts to. This one is much harder because: - the owner insists on walking directly on my fence (every day). - this morning she stopped to chat with someone on my fence. - I'm assuming little dog is a dominant bitch without training - this is where I need help with. I already have an electric fence inside the fence and I call bella back as soon as I hear her. I also have an ecollar on her most of the day but not always by the time this woman walks past. I would like to talk to the woman about how to fix the problem but don't know how to work out whether it is the little dog being dominant. How do you tell this from a dog walking on the lead? Little dog walks on a lead tied to the pram. Thank you

Both my dogs went through a stage as puppies when they would growl if I took their food off them. You need to teach him that this is not tolerated. Firstly I would take your three y.o. well out of the way. What I would do: - Put his food down and let him start eating - Take his bowl away calmly and hold it in your hand - Ask him to sit, if he sits and doesn't growl give his food back I would try this a few times per meal If he doesn't stop growling put his food away and try again next meal time. This is using the Nilif program of nothing in life is free and is fantastic for showing he only gets the food when he behaves. I'm not sure whether to introduce you 3 y.o. back into the equation. Someone else will have a better idea of this. Food guarding can become a big issue if you let it go but is simple to stop if you nip it in the bud. You control the food so therefore you control the growling Have fun

This is my opinion RottyLover is not accountable to anyone but himself and his dog in how they try to fix the problem. You are making some wild assumptions about the actions RL is willing to take. RL is also not obliged to share his experience with the forum.

:p That's very funny. Good girl xena.

Big hug deelee2. Don't get discouraged. 80% of people I see out walking their dogs have no idea how to do so correctly. That leaves 20% who have an idea. You are at least trying to work out how to fix this so that puts you in the top 22% of dog walkers :D In the last 15 minutes, I spilled coffee grounds all over my sink and opened my rubbish bin and was attacked by a swarm of flies. I've decided to have the evening off now :p Have a drink, it's friday.
-
I had an idea . You could try correcting her before she speeds up or a little bit earlier. I used to do this with bella when she pulled badly and by popping her lead as soon as she looked like she was going forward she didn't get a chance to get into this rhythm of pulling forward and falling back. eta--- I don't think steve's suggestion would be to use the ecollar. He recommended to me flat collar - martingale - prong, starting from left to right.

Perfect Recall Training Using Ecollar
BrunoBella replied to BrunoBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks guys. I couln't believe it either. There was a little dominant female who was challenging Bella (also dominant), I told Bella to "leave it" and she did. This gadget has so many other side effects I can't believe it. I feel utterly safe because I know I have total control of the dogs . -

Help Needed For Noisy Dogs In Brisbane
BrunoBella replied to ScruffyMax's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi ScruffyMax. You have my sympathy with brissie neighbours. They sure are fussy - some of them anyway. I don't know any trainers in Brissie but this thread discusses them all and has some recommendations. Brisbane trainers Hopefully, someone who has been in Brisbane longer will come and offer some more recommendations. Good Luck
