  1. I get the message big D is trying to make... You'll be more a kin to looking after something if it is more valuable to you. A cat breeder long ago said that to me. and I believe it. There was an actual study done on peoples perspective value of animals those who paid a lot were more than likely to keep the animal and look after it while those who paid little were more likely to either gave it away or surrender it or not be able to pay for vet costs. (will have to see if I can find it again) Low cost pups do attract the wrong people (and I know I said I'd stay away from these sale pages) just have a look at the facebook groups then look at the trends in your local pounds... also low costs attract impulse buys. dol online is hardly the place to find impulse buyers as opposed to a 'any mix breed dog forum'
  2. Dropped her off- never thought I'd cry...dogs have good way of making their owners feel 'bad' about leaving them!
  3. You obviously haven't read the whole thread ;), but anyway they want $25. It is their push on it that annoys me as I haven't personally known anyone that has ever needed one, and didn't think they would be offering to send her home with one.
  4. Plenty of tutorials on how to make them- I'd rather make them as I'm fairly crafty :) It was just the attitude of the vets that irked me- I'm not a first time dog owner- I'm not stupid. We've (well my mum)has had bitches desexed in the past with no issue- but like everything there will always be one that wants to do thing differently though- I won't deny :) It was when the total cost was asked they replied with the cost of desexing + the collar (which wasn't asked for) they also wanted microchip- umm she has one already. It was the self assuming attitude that they took on. Since the bitches (of my mums) and other friends dogs ect haven't had a need, I began to wonder if those dogs may have just been 'good' or 'lucky' so came here to ask.
  5. If you have seen a bitch spey go wrong with stitches no longer there , or an infection ..you wouldn't laugh at the vets 'just wanting to make money' no where did I say it was funny or that I'm laughing??? I'm at home all day and she's inside with me- If it ends up that I need a collar- obviously I'll get one.
  6. Thankyou both :) I didn't think she would- there's no reason to suspect she'd try and 'rip them out' seems as though they just want to make some extra $$$
  7. so as per the title- Fenrir (almost 18mths) is booked in to be desexed tomorrow, and they want her to wear an Elizabethan collar home- which is an extra added cost which I don't want to pay if she doesn't really need it. For those of you who have had their bitches desexed, how many ripped out their stiches?
  8. then leave that dog at home? and walk it later?
  9. I have looked into a dremel, but will stick to the standard clippers I think. My girl is really good-lol but I don't give her a choice for resistance  The photos have confirmed I was doing it right- from underneath I trim to where you can see a oval shape within the claw. thanks everyone
  10. so no car? or can't walk at less busy times during the day/night?
  11. I haven't read the whole thread, but this is my take on it... this is not a dog I would like to own- why is he exercising a reactive dog around busy areas? I saw that you mentioned if a chain or leash (can't remember) snapped then there would be bad results- this dog should under effective control at all times with re-inforced everything. It being walked where it's lunging at skaters and other dogs is not a good thing- it is not helping. I realize that you (not you specifically) can't keep it in a box but you can limit it to reactive places. Maybe owners of reactive dogs would like to give you some advise, as I maybe completely way off base.
  12. I saw a claw cutting diagram on here a little while back- but can't find it. Could someone be so kind as to repost it or direct me to the thread that had it? Also, does anyone have photos of correctly trimmed feet from underneath- I've been trimming my GSD over the last few weeks, but am not sure if they are still too long (they look long)as I have no reference. Cheers (:
  13. I would have asked how can they be pure...? and then educate all the people reading but not necessarily posting with polite responses after all the target (well at least mine) is the audience.
  14. Because one parent is purebred English staffy, and the other parent is purebred amstaffs.... Just like "purebread Maltese shitzoo's" Someone on a fb group wanted purebread chiwahwahs I said try the bakery... (but did end up giving a link to DOL)
  15. Totally agree. I don't know how he just 'forgot' he worked with the dog! Doesn't make any sense.
  16. Hi Schnooze - welcome to the forum :) I can answer some of these questions for you, not as a breeder- but as a daughter of a breeder For my mum (going back about 30 yrs) the first time she fell in love with a particular breed was when she was at a park, and a dog went streaming across the park that caught her eye. After talking to the owner of the dog she researched the breed and found a reputable breeder who exhibited their breed in shows and trials. She bought a show potential puppy and showed it and trialed it- the bitch went on and won numerous awards and trophies- addiction was in full place! My mum bought more show potential puppies and showed them along with the original bitch- though they did well, not quite as well as the first. My mother started researching the lines and worked out what would mesh well with her original bitch- and produced 10 puppies more than half went to pet homes where the people had no interest in showing or breeding, a few went to show potential homes and one puppy bitch was kept on. those that went to show homes did well in shows however we received updates on all even though we moved countries! :)My Mum bred one more litter from the original bitch and one litter from her daughter before not breeding or showing again due to her health.
  17. I don't understand your comment "Different breeds" what's there not to understand? They have different breed standards- therefore they are different breeds- irregardless of how they started off. here, also an extraction from the ANKC standard: 'Our' meaning ANKC recognized. Note 'early' Hmm...separation ETA- done with this thread - there is always going to be a debate on whether or not they're the same breed (even with different standards), however that was not what the original topic was about.

  19. I'm well aware of the history behind the GSD thanks. ;) http://www.wagsdogclub.com/Community/articles/alsatian_is_a_gsd.htm Many consider the AST to be the watered down version of the original breed APBT just like many consider the Shiloh to only look like a GSD but without the heart of a GSD :) Different breeds. http://www.apbtconformation.com/adbastandard.htm http://www.ankc.org.au/Breed_Details.aspx?bid=46 I guess this is just one of 'those' that will rage on forever..
