Someone Sold Me A Pitbull Not A Cocker Spaniel
WExtremeG replied to Atanquin's topic in General Dog Discussion
I found it. The first report called it a "pitbull cross", and one day later they've corrected themselves and called it a "bull terrier cross" while noting that is was incorrectly named the first time. -

To you yes, to a lot of people who only ever hear about them no. I came across sooooo many people who wouldn't have had a clue when I was working in a shelter. Not to mention the huge amount of people who think anything with bull in the name is a pit bull. Not only that but some people believe the news like its the bible The thing that I find incredibly hard to believe, is the fact that someone would be naming a breed, when clearly they have no idea... I believe that someone who wouldn't have the foggiest is less inclined to name a breed if they don't know what that breed is supposed to look like IYKWIM. I've never seen the news (someone show me- I'd like to see) where they've named the breed and gotten it badly wrong, usually they're right on the ball* (obviously they've shown pictures or video evidence of said dog). I will admit though, that there have been cases of people who tend to say they have a certain breed, when what they have is a cross of that certain breed- *I can see where the media may choose to name only the part of the breed they like the most to up the ratings, while knowing full well, that said dog is a X of that breed. Yes, so what I'm essentially saying, is that your average Joe is probably not going to know what a APBT is, probably isn't going to accuse a dog of being one (so Joe Blow isn't a problem). I got asked if my dog was a Dingo. I was asked. -

Where does one get the idea that people wouldn't know a Pitbull if they saw it (providing that they had 20/20 vision)- is it from the media incorrectly identifying other dog/X breeds as one of them- and how would we know, unless there's photographic evidence of the wrong breed named? It's something I've always wondered- I think that they're very distinctive... -

Someone Sold Me A Pitbull Not A Cocker Spaniel
WExtremeG replied to Atanquin's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hey!??? LOL!!! -
This owner appeared to be in his garage with the dog loose.. clearly the dog doesn't listen as he was yelling and screaming for it to come back, it had no intentions of listening to him, it just kept running. I don't think it was being territorial, it just saw another dog and thought.. WOO HOO, lets play.. the problem isn't the dog, its the irresponsible owner. Thanks for the input everyone, it helps to hear others opinons on how to deal with this sort of situation. My reply (in bold) was in response to some of the other posters suggestions- anyhow, the dog is not being controlled and could be a safety risk to other dogs and motorist as well as obviously to itself. Ring the council- I bet the owner starts complying...

What Can Be Done About Unethical Registered Breeders?
WExtremeG replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
Ah yes! I remember filling out one of those forms and sending it in to CCCQ. Don't know if the general public can access it though? -
I guess this is only good if the rushing dog stops before he reaches you. Hasn't been the case for us 2/2 times. Ring the council if it happens again- dogs should be contained.

Ours has the green and white striped bed from petstock- and she barely uses it. She prefers to sleep underneath instead.

What Can Be Done About Unethical Registered Breeders?
WExtremeG replied to Leema's topic in General Dog Discussion
This is a great idea, perhaps we should be pushing the state associations to allow for puppy buyers to provide feedback - The association could send out forms much like car manufacturers do when you get a car - asking for feedback as to the standard of the car dealer as well as for servicing. Even offering the first year free membership of the association to the new puppy buyer as an incentive, thus perhaps increasing membership for the future. Nowdays as membership has to have photo id means that unethical breeders would not be able to put in false forms to stack this system. Feedback ratings could then be given to breeders by the association - general comments from these then because available for the public to view. This would create a positive approach to breeders and Associations can then make recommendations to public - rather than trying to highlight the negatives. They already do this in Qld Do they? Is the information available to the public? I'd like to know this too... -

A system like eBay could work. -
Of course I would. My guess is that police announced themselves at the front door and were in the yard when the 'suspect' bolted out the back door. My dogs know all about police dogs - we have had two next door over the years I've lived here. My dogs are amazingly brave and bold toward them from behind the fence. ;) Securing dogs is something I imagine is a pretty standard procedure when searching homes. It's not like they are an unusual feature of suburbia. We've seen a few incidents reported here where police have had issues with dogs though. I think the last Australian one, it was the officer who was on the recieving end of the aggression. If the police had advised the owner that they were moving through their backyard, why were the police so understanding that the dogs were only protecting thier territory? Again, it comes down to information that i'm not aware of although the police officers comments would suggest that maybe the owner didn't know that the police were going through their backyard. All speculation, i'm no offering any comment as to what actually went down, just my take on what i've read in the media reports I don't think the dogs got that memo? I reckon they (the police) were understanding as what would one expect from that scenario...? It's not the dogs fault they have a dickhead of an owner.

Did you not watch the video? .......................... I want to know how they came to the conclusion that one is a Pitbull, and the other an Amstaff???

I'd have to agree with you there. I searched high and low and found my perfect sheppy- she was well worth the wait :D -

He was quite calm IMO- and he didn't 'storm' out. Yep of course he was ready to shoot...why do you think he wouldn't he be?
-
Umm...What did you want the officer to do Blackdogs? That Brindle dog comes running over and barking as soon as they notice him. The officer wasn't threatning in any way, the dog however was (and got shot for it). Watch from 2.22 without sound- (gives you a better perspective) so seriously, what do you think he should have done?
-
I was contemplating on whether or not to watch it... curiosity got the better of me and I did. Yes It is distressing, but not for the two strays, only for the Beagle who is clearly and rightly terrified, and who knows how long this played out for? Video does not play in one piece- so it could have been long and drawn out. For those who have yet to watch, you don't get to see much- as a tree ends up blocking the view- which is good (at least for me). I don't like the behaviour of the brindle dog at all...that posture is downright scary- (when my GSD pup was attacked, it started in similar way)- I thought that we were going to end up seeing a dead Beagle (which btw was tied to it's kennel). It looks as though someone is trying to get one of the strays with a catching pole, but can't quite get it- I don't think the cop acted inappropriately- he had a situation and dealt with it.

How To Stop Pulling On The Lead.
WExtremeG replied to whitka's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
How bout no pressure? (walk the dog round and round in circles (pivoting around you) until the dog looks at you, then continue heeling until the dog starts pulling again OR stand perfectly still until the dog looks at you, then continue heeling until the dog starts pulling again) We were given the circle work option as opposed to the standing still option, and were told that it could take up to 20mins to gain the dogs attention... Those methods did not work for my dog- in fact it was down right embarrassing! LOL that is funny! -
I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but laugh at this...
