  1. I’m sorry if it came across that I was having ago at breeders or rescue groups etc. That wasn’t my intention. I know that there are many good breeders that do the right thing probably way more than the number that don’t. I understand that a breeder and/or showy can’t always keep every dog. What shocked me or surprised me was the number of dogs being listed on the sites that from reading the attached information are said to be ex show dogs or have been in the show ring or ex breeding bitches (and I’m not referring to being bred every heat) but state that they can’t be housed with other dogs etc., some of which I have read because they have only lived in runs etc. I assumed that if a breeder and/or showy is going to raise a dog that they are likely to re-home later for whatever reason that they would go to some effect to raise him or her in such a way that would better their chances of finding a good home (and I’m not saying every breeder or show home doesn’t). If they have never been or lived around other dogs or children etc. this would limit them in finding a home. Not saying that a single home with no children or other animals is bad or not as good as one that has just stating that it gives them less options and its far easier to introduce a pup or young dog to this kind of home than an old dog or older dog. And we also know that older dogs are hard to re home than young dogs or pups so to better their chances why not go the extra mile. And I’m not saying people don’t just that it’s obvious that some aren’t. Over the years I’ve bred horses and when doing so I’ve always kept in mind how a foal or horse is raised and trained so that if one day they need a new home the options are greater and therefore hopefully better. I did this because I loved them, I hopefully in a small way did my part to better them, and not just for the sake of the animal but the reputation also. Every one of them I loved dearly and still think of even though they are no longer mine. To me there is something special about bringing a life into the world and therefor I need to do my best to care for it. I see no real difference in seeing a foal take its first breath and a pup. I have nothing against rescue groups. Without them the world would be a lot worse off and I hate to think of what would happen to the dogs that need them. Although I’ve not been involved in the running of a dog rescue group I have been involved over the years with horse rescue and taken in what I would consider rescue cases. And I’m not referring to dogs on the sites that are there because they have been found in pounds and shelters as I’m aware that they come with very limited history if any at all. I do have some questions but! My understanding of a BYB is someone that is not registered with a canine council, and/or is not breeding under a registered prefix of sort. How do you breed papered dogs if you are not breeding under a registered prefix (either your own or someone else’s). And if a dog is being listed by a breeder or show home due to no longer showing or breeding etc. why do they need to list the dog on a RESCUE group? Surely they have the knowhow to advertised a dog if needed and sift through the good replies and the bad. Otherwise how else did they ever home a pup in the first place. Rescue groups should be left for dogs in real need that are on death row, impounded or in need of a foster career etc. Sorry again nothing against anyone and sorry the post was so long.
  2. I'd like to point out im a social member i don't run the sites, i don't run any resuce groups and i don't breed. some are bull terrier groups but not all. I think that the term to better the breed should include all aspects of the breed including the breeds reputation! If some of this dogs are ec show and some state dogs have papers i'm assuming they are not all coming from BYB's.
  3. isn't one of the most common reasons people breed to better the breed? well one that people will tell you. I am a member of a few breed specific rescue pages on facebook most just in my area (well with in 100kms). and over the last few months i've been overwhelmed with the number of dogs that need re-homing 85-90% which are either 12mth old ex show dogs or older bitches from show homes. but neally all of them can not be re-homed with other dogs. most tell the same story. no longer being shown so needs a new home but not social with dogs, other animals or children. often living in a run etc. and abot 25% or more are finding them selfs re-listed due to not working out at the new homes. If we choose to breed to better the breed shouldn't we be making sure that our dogs are socialised so that they have the best chance of finding suitable good homes along with type, temp and health etc.
  4. Cause she's always running off to the local school to play with the kids when we're not home and she wont kill a pig
  5. council offers a discounted rego fee for dogs queensland members. can i ask how much membership is please and what that covers.
  6. Logan city council have put up the new laws regarding keeping animals. these cover just about everything from dogs, cats and horses to even guinea pigs. some of the changes regarding dogs include: now being aloud to keep dogs on properties smaller than 499 squares +up to 3 dogs on properties 2,000 to 80,000 squares without approval and up to 4 dogs on properties over 80,000 without approval and upto 9 dogs with approval My link Other changers include ALL CATS MUST NOW BE DESEXED!
  7. shouldn't the standards be re written then if they are wrong!
  8. still don't agree that anyone that has pets should be paying higher rent etc. shouldn't good referees acount for something. Any rental i ever lived in was always left in better condition than it was when i moved in. part of being a good pet owner is making sure that your pet has a clean enviroment to live. my experience with 90% of landlords is they want everything for nothing and believe that they own the home so you owe them something or believe that they have a right to tell you how you can live. If your pets are looked after there shouldn't be anymore wear on a property than what was normal for not having them there. And if they did cause damage then the tenant should repair it as they would if it was their own home. Rentals are just to expensive as it is now. in some areas in Australia people are on waiting lists for government houses as long as 18 years because normal rentals are just becaming out of reach. I see no point in paying $500 plus a week for a rental when you could be paying off your own home for that. Years ago we worked to live, now we live to work.
  9. I missed this post. honestly seems a little two faced. one part of the post tenants should pay more rent and bond next it should be illegal to discriminate and land landlords should find alternate investment Do tenants no have the right to live just as a home owner. I personally see no reason to refuse a tenant accommodation because they have a pet or children or charge them high bond or rent. As long as the tenant keeps the property clean and tidy and the all pets are within the local laws, the pets are being looked after and no damage is being done. I'd also like to point out that its not just tenants with children and pets damage property or don't take care of them, loads of property owners have their pets and children taken away!
  10. Cats have had to be kept in and microchipped in NSW for 15 years - no one has policed it and its difficult to see its made a scrap of difference . Around here feral cats a re a big issue - they are killing machines as they hunt in colonies. The idea someone would want one as a pet or desex and allow it to live here still is not my ideal. I see little difference in that and having a pack of wild dogs living on my property. here in both ipswich and logan properties are stop checked. my animals are registered but in the 4 years ive lived in the area i've been checked at lease 3 times that i know of by rangers searching every property in the area. some still get away with it but with new rangers just being employed its only a matter of time. I do own two cats both older, and take steps to stop my beloved pets hurting or killing other animals. both desexed, wear bells and rego tags, are kept inside when im not home and rearly go outside anyway and if they do they never stay of my property. I live on acreage and have never had any of my cats kill a bird etc. but i have seen cats in my area without collars roaming from property to proptery. no every cat owner or pet owner for that keeps a close eye on their pets as i do but.
  11. I refer to a post on a topic i added about a week ago about my new staffy as i refered to her as being Black someone replied the following: so sparking my interest i looked up the CCCQ standards for Staffordshire bull terriers and read this: so is the above statement un true and am i able to say my girl is Black or do i need to refer to her as Black/Brindle so as not to be corrected again
  12. would be interested to know how he was found and where. details might lead to someone finding diva
  13. New cat laws in logan qld will require all cats to be registered and wearing their rego tag, all cats to be desexed and be kept indoor or in a cat run. fines of $200 per offence will apply. also a max of 2 cats per house. Im yet to hear new dog laws but i assume they will be much the same only insted of being in a run they will need to be in a fenced yard.
  14. no pack or heard animal is ever equal. There is always going to be one more dominate than the other/others. here its just two dogs working out who's top dog. but if you had say 3 or 4 then each would have its place from number 1 top dog to 4th in line. its natural and would be un natural to punish them for doing it as long as no one is getting hurt. if you disapprove of it i think it better to just tell them to quit it is far better then spraying them! and if your dog has a habbit of doing it to other dogs in the park etc then don't let them off the lead.
  15. It has nothing to do with sexual urges. animals do not see sex the same way us humans do. often its no different to play or a act of communication. I'd say here the female is trying to work her way up in the pack, rafter then commit a sexual act. Having breed horses for many years i have seen many foals both male and female mount their mothers and other foals in the paddock. this is just play. Im sure any animal that finds it harassing will quickly let the offender know. i don't agree that they should be punished for doing something thats natural and a part of their communication. i find by just saying "guys knock it off" they stop anyway.
  16. you will never stop animals being inpounded and PTS but somethings could be changed to help lower the numbers + for one pet shops will always sell pets because without them they would in many cases go broke. so why not make them sell with a desexing voucher or condition of sale. more than 90% of pups are given for free to pet shops who pay about $50 ea to have vet checked and first needles. then they mark up the price anywhere from $290 to $700 ea. and kittens are almost always given free and in most cases you have to prove they have been wormed reg too. again they too are marked up. + new laws in qld making all dogs, cats, kittens and puppies needing to be micro chipped just to be advertised is going to also make a difference. there are no reason not to have them micro chipped as even free now have to be micro chipped too. thow maybe this could also work in a bad way with more being dumpped due to not wanting to pay for the micro chip. + I think cheaper council reg is in need. $100 a year or more per pet in some cases is just stupidity! I remember when i first got a puppy as a kid and council rego was only about $5. If your dog strays outside the council area and/or looses its collar a local rego will not help them any way. I remember years ago when i got my mini she was micro chipped and registered on a nation wide register so that if she went missing and her chip was scanned any vet in australia could access her details. I had just moved to QLD and with in the week i had a guy from brisbane council hanging over my fence. no knock at the door. when i went out to see what was going on cause the dog was barking he told me he was here for a spot check and that not only was my dog not registered with council i had a pitbull which was not aloud in the area. having papers to prove she was in fact a bull terrier and not a pitbull i then asked him why i should register my dog at $120 per year with council when she is all ready registered for free nation wide. he couldn't answer me. cut a long story short people whould be more likely to register pet if it was cheaper. + i don't think all pounds give the time needed to find lost pets. some only keep them for 3 days and often don't rehome. with the floods this year so many more pets ended up in pounds and miles away from home. i for one was stuck at home cut off for almost 5 days and alot of other people a lot worse off than me. with loved ones missing. i guess finding lost kids, mothers etc came before 3 day deadlines to find there pets even if they dearly loved them. i also beleive that if a pet is suitable to be rehomed than they should at least have something in place to do so. not just be PTS or sent to the sale yards after 3 days.
  17. her name is lara. we are having trouble calling her that, just dont seem to suit her but thats the name she came with so we will keep it. she is out of pure parents but she was purchased without papers. can she still be pedigree if she hasn't got papers or is she just pure bred and i've worded that wrong too. Im a little new to the dog lingo, i've been breeding horses for over 15 years but the dog talk is new now i've given up the horses.
  18. i would say that she wouldn't they not that way inclind if you know what i mean.
  19. one of my cats over dosed with a flea collar. she had a seizure and was very sick she also lost all her hair. my vet said that its real common with both dogs and cats to OD on flea collars and warns everyone not to use them.
  20. the kids are nagging me to take her to the park but im not sure. i think i should have her checked over first by the vet and get her vaccs etc.
  21. ive owned staffies over the years but it's been a long time since i did any reading up on them. when i was contacted about taking the dog she made a note of saying she was English not american. personally i thought all staffies came from English lines somewhere along and couldn't understand how you could have an American staffordshire when the breed is English. that is a bit like saying you have American English bulldog . my friend said his dog is an American staffy. when i googled it they look taller then what i would consider being a staffy and look more like a pitbull type. but apart from that ive seen them adverised as American staffies, american staffordshire bull terriers, american staffordshire and amstaffs etc. honestly i wasn't sure if it was something people made up to rename pits or a new breed because their popping up everywhere these days (well those oodle types which they palm off as a breed).
  22. ive seen 'American staffordshire bull terrier' advertised alot. just pointing out she wasn't american.
  23. I have just go a new dog after a few years of being dog less after my girl passed away. I have two cats and can't for the life of me remember the safe flea control to us on dogs that are around cats. im talking about the stuff you put on the back of the neck once a month. the stuff you us on cats is ok around dogs but not all brands you us on dogs are safe around the cats. and i hate flea collars. any one know the brand and is it any good for tick control too. thanks guys.
  24. after months of looking for a bully pup i finally got my name on a waiting list about a week or so ago. i was contacted by a family member about her staffy bitch she needed to rehome. she is 3 years old and pedigree english staffy but no papers. she needed to rehome her because there not home much now and the dog was spending all her time on the chain because everytime they let her off she was straight over the fence and off to the local school to play with the kids. and just by luck my mother was travelling up from NSW the next day and so she stopped in and picked her up. so im still on the waiting list but now have a staff girl too. it works out well i guess cause im not looking at getting the pup until at least another 6mths and we really needed a dog now. my partner works on cars at home and this way a dog is going to let us know is people are snooping round. she's grown up around other dogs, kids and other animals so when the pup comes it will be good for her too. she arrived on tuesday after 4 hours drive. she was so good in the car, just sat on the seat the whole way. and she's been real good here too. she's meet the cats which went well. and the kids. she's such a sook. Jet black with the biggest bark brown eyes. I can't beleive how good she is. at night i've put her on a chain at the back door (just until she gets use to the place and i have her micro chipped and council registered) and by day she has access to the hole 2 acres. and she hasn't once tried to run away. our fances are higher then where she came from so that helps too. for the most part she's very quiet. and if you are outside she's happy to plod around the yard and sit at your feet etc. well she sits on my partners feet looking up at him with those big eyes when he's talking to the young blokes about cars this and cars that like she's talking it all in. only thing is when we've been out or wake up in the morning she is very excitable. she runs up to me and jumps and almost knoks me off my feet. so we will have to work on that. but next week we are off to the vet for a check up, micro chip (if she hasn't already got one cause they can't remember if she had one when they got her)and vacc's. then council rego and im looking into doggy school. cause she hasn't had any real training.
