Do you mean Equine Piropasmosis? It is control by Australian Equine Quaratine. With a lot of horses coming from overseas for racing, olympics and horse equestrian events we usually dont have any of this. I dont believe there has been a case. http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/rirdc/articles/disease/timony.htm What do ticks look like. Advice Wanted On Feeding
TiffanyAmber replied to Annie Oakley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I only used the can idea as a guide. We use to feed a can per dog, but since being on BARF, you think we were starving our dogs. LOL. Adding vegies is a good idea. New tastes for dogs to try. Now the question of cooked or raw. Depends on the dog. I blanch mine, its the only way they eat it. Dogs wont starve themselves. If the dogs walk away from their meals, take it up and put in the fridge, covered. Try again later, say 10mins - 30mins. If still not taking food, then they must be happy and full. I would give the bikkies a miss. My choice, but its up to you. I would say, if they dont eat it, why give it. I dont feed my girls any dry food whatsoever. They dont miss it. They can be happy on simply meaty bones and a meat and vegies mix. When you think they look a bit skinny, give more. If they are a little podgy, give less. Do a search with BARF as the topic and get a few more ideas on what extras you can add. Like eggs, yoghurt, sardines/fish, chicken necks, etc etc. -
Advice Wanted On Feeding
TiffanyAmber replied to Annie Oakley's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
You dont state how much you are feeding them. Possible you are overfeeding?? Maybe why the dogs refuse to eat some nights. Why dry food? I dont see any vegies with the mince. Dogs on a BARF diet tend to need less food that say can feeders. -
Did you know that most paraylsis to the dogs is because the tick has been there for a couple of days. It pays to check everyday. I've lived in Queensland and know the buggers do damage. Now in Vic we get a new case each week.

Anything to get your money. You know ticks dont have heads.

These days, any where is tick area. With the semi's loaded with cattle coming past, you just dont take any chances. I've seen them here in country Vic. Living close to the highway, I have heard a few dogs get them. Always check in the most unlikely areas too. The ears especially. They love a warm moist area. Sweaty areas too.

Should you find a tick, don’t remove it. Removing a live tick usually causes it to inject more toxin into your pet’s body. Kill the little bugger with a fast acting insecticide applied directly to it. I've seen too many dogs die because their owners just take them out with a tweezers. Get out the Baygon, Pea Beu(sp?), or any other good insecticide spray. Just spray directly on the spot of the tick. And wait till the bugger removes itself.

Not really sure on that. I do clean my windows with a bit of eccuy and I havent had the odd dead flies on the sill. I just like having the smell in the house. I do get them inside the house, but usually they a followed by me with the fly spray. I hate them more than anything else. :D -

Urgent Advice Needed
TiffanyAmber replied to blue elephant pjs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I cant believe this. :D If you think your dog has digested any Ratsak or Snail Pellets, the first think you should do is go straight to the vet. The vet will induce vomiting by placing a small pellet (not sure what it is) inside the eyelid and the dog will bring up anything that is in the stomach. Even if your not sure wether the dog did or did not eat any, at least you will be sure. Ratsak is a slow and pain full death. to those who dont think. -

Natrual Insect Repelants
TiffanyAmber replied to zayda_asher's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use Garlic in their food. Once a week just half a teaspoon. Eucalytpus oil is great for fleas. Just a dab or two on their skin. Or on their collars. If you can get a shampoo that has eucalytpus in the wash, even better still. Spray their kennels and blankets with a mixture of Eucalytpus Oil and water in a spray bottle. How much euccy depends on how bad the situation is. I usually use a splash of euccy and half fill with water in a spray bottle. Eucalytpus Oil in a burner keeps them away from the house and makes for a nice smell too. Havent seen fleas for yonks. -
Physillium Husks. Its cheaper. Same stuff.

Feel her stomach, is it hard and/or bulging? She could be in pain.

Anal Glands - Your Dogs Reactions
TiffanyAmber replied to hopenfox's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Out of four dogs I could say only one dog will relax and let me do it. Two person job, lots of tissues and gloves (who needs them). Lots of coaxing and happy times. One dog I have to get the daughter to hold a bone in front of her nose. Ssshhheeeesssh. Do it when they least expect it. -
Ethoxyquin. Now I read something about that. Something about it being banned in USA. Not sure. Ethoxyquin was developed by Monsanto as a rubber hardener and insecticide. ... Do a Google search on Ethoxyquin. You will be surprised.

Dog Sleeping In Your Bed
TiffanyAmber replied to joannakathleen's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
joannakathleen what you mum is saying is an old wives tale. Or should that be mothers tale. Myth. Years and years ago, when dogs were only outside and we couldnt afford the flea treatments and worming tablets, that was just it, unhygenic. Now adays, all our dogs have a better life and are much cleaner than what they were say 20, 30 or 50 years ago. So long as your baby is washed, wormed, flea treated and fed, there is no harm in it. I have two Chi's in my bed and there is no problems with my health or my kids health and I certainly dont have any dominance issues. My girls know I am their leader. If mum has problems with the fur, then you can wash the sheets. Sleep tight. -
What Vegetables Shouldn't You Feed Dogs?
TiffanyAmber replied to Norskgra's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yes. The grapes story has been debated many times. I too feed my dogs grapes and no problems at all. I also feed my dogs any leftover spaghetti bolognase(sp?) and mine has lots and lots of onions. Not to mention the tomatoes. I believe it all comes down to moderation. Eat too much and you suffer. -

TiffanyAmber replied to Norskgra's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Of course. I dont have any problems with califlower and broccoli, its in my mix of ...pumpkin, califlower, broccoli, swede, zuccini, carrots. That is my main mix. But I also add any leftover vegies that the family will leave, and that can be potatoes, beans, peas, and brussel sprouts too and whatever else is in season that the kids wont touch. I too add 3 zuccinis for my monthly mix. I believe if you are worried about any reactions to a vegetable just give a bit when you have some. Most definately no onions or tomatoes. -
I know how hard it is to have such happy healthy babies. And believe me it can get you crying. I wish I had this magical cure for this problem, but unfortunately I dont. When you've been visiting the vets and spending heaps of moneys and still there is no cure. Well I prefer the elimination diet. It worked for me. I found my girls were allergic to that knob meat VIP Gourmet Chicken and other varieties. This is one of the reasons why I changed to BARF. It worked for awhile and then the itchies came back. Corn was one and beef was another. Dry food was another again. Then I went back to their old shampoo (I have two other dogs, no probs) and boy did we have problems again. So back to the Quit-Itch I went. Cost a bit, but no more than the other shampoos like Aloveen.

OUCH. Could be the Tea Tree. Lavender is calming. You will find a lot of dogs are allergic to Tea Tree. Mine were. I would go back to a non soaping shampoo like Quit-Itch. Aloveen sound okay, have heard good reports. I use to wash my dogs three times a week when they had there itchies. I know you cant do that. But after a Quit-Itch bath they were good for a couple of days. After the elimination diet I only have to bath once a fortnight or when they get dirty. No probs.....I've only washed her 3 time since we got her though, could thats still be coursing this much itching? Could be. No harm in trying.
-
Yes that would be great. If you can mix your own vegies, (I do) that would be great also.
