Yet another dumb comment. If you think pure breed = safety then you're sadly mistaken!! Show us the attack stats for pure breed ANKC papered dogs supplied by registered breeders then compare that with BYB crossbreed involvement, that I think would be an interesting viewing? If you think stats care about ANKC rego (along with the general public or journo's who report on attacks) then you're again sadly mistaken. I am sure it would be less as you imply, however it doesn't make a dog safe. It can make a dog safe with a better breeding and breeding out fear biters and predisposition to aggression. Dogs escaping the yard and roaming in this case isn't the default behaviour for all dogs to go on an attacking rampage, in fact it would be interseting also to here people's opinion if they think their dog would attack people randomly on the street if they escaped the yard, I know mine wouldn't Also you'll find that a majority of pedigree owned dogs have owners who put in the time, effort and love in training and keeping them secure. So 1. Very rarely would you find a beloved pet roaming, unless it played escape artist, which sometimes happens. Or 2. If it did roam, it would be trained not to maul. Some people buy these types of cross breeds cheap and train them specifically to be attack / guard dogs, and don't particularly give 2 shits about whether they're contained or not. It's not only 'pit bulls' that are dangeous, there are other dogs that can be just as dangeous due to neglect and lack of training. The news papers need to stop being gossip magazines and start printing facts.

The Greater Swiss is a traditional family guardian dog if you do not want a dog that shows any form of aggressive tendencies I think you a looking at the wrong category of dog. This.

It's kinda cute... But oh my god I would not pick it up if it came into my house.. I'd be the silly girl standing on a chair calling the boyfriend to rescue
-
Wouldn't that part be up to you to train? I knew a jack russel that lived on a farm who got into the chicken coop and mauled about 4 chickens....

I have never met an aggressive rotti.. The ones I've met are usually asleep on someone on the couch or following them around like a little shadow... I'm usually quite intimidated by large dogs, due to being quite small myself and having an incident when I was younger but rotti's are not a breed I feel uncomfortable around..

I was just about to mention a standard poodle too My Mum calls them 'Woolie Horses'.

She looks like she's having a great time!!

But if they were contained you wouldn't be calling up and complaining about dogs on the loose. I was bailed up on my own property by the neighbour's aggressive dog. Fortunately I was able to get behind a gate. Rang council who did speak to the owner but asked if I could "take a picture next time" because they couldn't do much without evidence. Perhaps teeth marks might suffice "Excuse me Mr Aggressive Dog, please hold that pose with your teeth out whilst I just take your picture. Then you may resume your attack, THANK YOU'

I haven't actually thought of doing that with shelved items but with milk I do it all the time!! I've noticed milk usually has due by dates of 2 weeksish, which is great considering most of the milk bottles at the front have max 1 week... and when you live alone, and don't use milk or have the need to go to the shops every week this is a godsend. I would be now more inclined to look at other items in the same light now. Not sure why the consumers should be to blame for wanting to maximise their grocery life considering the cost of them these days

It's such a good thing your son was not affected psychologically from this. It's such a shame that some people actually train there dogs to become such monsters, or they become such monsters from lack of training. Regardless of temperament people should not let there dogs roam or keep them unsecured.. Don't they worry at the bare minimum that their pet may get hit by a car let alone attacking an innocent passerby??

Thanks so much Christine, I've given here the number - You do prove a good point there. I've given her a list of things to ask for, it's made her a little bit more aware of the things that could potentially go wrong which is good. She'll go in looking not just with her heart, but now at least with her head aswell, knowing that just because it's cute it doesn't mean it's perfect. Which wouldn't be fair on her or the puppy.

Thanks Poo-Fong and Saxonpup! I think a Poodle would be a great match for her, she's very doting and mothering and from what I've read poodles are very loyal, sweetnatured and smart little critters (Reading the poodle breed profile actually sounds like it's explaining my Mum, minus the wool ) Is that your little poodle X in the pic Saxonpup? Both your little dogs are beautiful

Anyone Looking For Pet Friendly Rental In Adelaide?
minimiss replied to smoochie cuddles's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's a fantastic priced rental! Don't get much for that around Melbourne that's for sure. Best of luck finding a tenant who takes care of your gardens and home -
It's times like this you wish you could use 'Aardvark' somehow

My Mum has finally decided over years of 'umm-ing and ahh-ing' she's finally getting a puppy. She had them growing up in England, and has decided with my Sister over the other side of town, and myself over the other side of the country it's time to have another 'baby' Darling Mother is not so handy with a computer and is keen to locate a breeder (I've knowledged her on BYB, health issues etc, so she wants to find a registed and ethical breeder.. Victory!!) As my Sister is not the most supportive of helping others, Mum has enlisted me to do so. So, I was hoping if any DOLers know of any great Poodle breeders in Perth (Toy or Miniture)? She's not really comfortable in getting an interstate puppy and would prefer to go and meet the breeder to check out the puppies etc. herself. I've seen a few breeders listed on the usual sites, however if anyone has recommendations beforehand, this would be excellent. Thanks in advance!

Picking German Shepherd Puppy From Litter.
minimiss replied to NewGsdOwner's topic in General Dog Discussion
You could also try sitting near the puppies and see which one is most intrigued by you and seems to pay you the most attention. Now I don't necessarily think this is the most 'scientific' approach or if it's actually even been a proven method.. But I know a few people who have done this and their dogs seem to be a perfect loyal match.. -

Makeshift Doggy Diaper/nappy Thingameebob

Could always put a 'puppy pee pad' down underneath the dog blanket that way there is something a little more absorbent between your bed and your girl! Just like putting plastic under kids sheets rather than putting them in nappies in case of accidents! (Do they still do that these days or was that just the terrible 80s or my darling mother? -
Oh wow! That's an amazing story Leema! Goes to show sometimes things aren't as they seem. You must be one of the lucky 'exceptions' to the rule. I guess it's always nice to hope, and think positively, but at the same time look at the consequences so regardless of what happens, you'll be as prepared as you can be. (Even though being prepared for things like this is often possible in practice but different in theory)

Have You Ever Opt For Your Second Choice Breed First?
minimiss replied to Fleuri's topic in General Dog Discussion
On the bright side, at least it has confirmed your breed choice so you wont always be wondering. Who knows what may happen down the track, you may want another puppy, and it may be your '2nd choice' puppy after all. Keeping in touch with the breeder is a great idea, not only to be able to watch and learn more about this breed, if you do decide you ever want to get another puppy, you can always get one from these wonderful breeders. -
Quite possibly the best 'character capturing' photo ever!
