Behaviours That Could Lead To Dominance
lovemyrottie replied to lovemyrottie's topic in General Dog Discussion
thanks for the positive responses guys and for the people that are against, each to their own i guess! i wouldn't change a thing about my so called "sticky rottie" and cherish every moment of our closenesses together because one day they won't be there, their life's way too short and i wouldn't want to regret anything... too much time is spent over analysing things (which was me at one point) and worrying about the smaller things in life when you should just enjoy every moment of it while you have it. for now pup's not causing any problems and if he tries to be naughty, i'll tell him off and he'll stop what he's doing then walk off with his head down i'm aware that things might change a little as he gets older and since i'm not planning to neuter him till he's at least 15-18 months might also make things a little more challenging but i'll follow the advise of the more experienced, keep going to obedience training, be firmer, consistent or whatever it is that i'll have to do and hope for the best! -
so, this is something that confuses me and i'd like to hear what other people think about it! everywhere i hear of different thoughts, beliefs and opinions about dominance and when a dog does or displays such behaviour it's either apparently dominant or it could lead to the dog being dominant. such as, a dog leaning on you, bringing their toys and pushing them against you, standing over your feet or legs, if a dog walks through the door before you, if they walk a tiny bit ahead of you on a lead (wouldn't call it pulling though) if you let them sit up on the couch next to you, if you let them sleep on your bed etc. mine does some of those things (especially leaning on me and bringing his toys to me) but yet he'll obey my commands, he'll get off the couch when i want him to without a problem, he's never growled at me or anything, he's not at all possessive with his toys or food, when we have kids around they pretty much do anything to him (play around with his tail, play with his face, cuddle him, kiss him, you know name it!) and he loves every bit of that attention, basically i have no problem with him whatsoever and in my opinion he's not dominant at all but to others all those behaviours are apparently dominant behaviours basically, what are your thoughts and beliefs about these behaviours and does or has your dog displayed any of them yet they're not dominant?

my puppy use to do the same, he'd bark to come in when i'd leave him outside for bed time every night but not once have i allowed him to sleep inside because i know that'd make it even worse! i still live at home with my family and they're the strict ones but once i move out my boy will be sleeping inside right beside my bed and i can't wait :D so anyway, i took someone's advise to just ignore him when he barks (do not attend to them or they'll do it all the time to get that attention again) and he'll eventually settle down but it was pretty frustrating for me and probably for the neighbours even though we have great neighbours! it took me a while to figure out what to do but so far i find this to be working most of the time - i tire him out with lots of running around then eventually he'll just flop down inside and start falling asleep so then i get a treat and lure him outside to his kennel where he gets his treat eats it and because he's still tired he'll just fall back asleep without a sound all night! only rarely does he wake back up and bark, even if he starts barking it's usually not for very long (thank god) because he knows nobody's going to come to that door and open it for him! maybe try something like that but you got to make sure she doesn't hear or see people inside (even lights turned on) cause it'll probably make her bark knowing you're inside and still awake, goodluck :D

all sounds a bit too familiar! no wonder you stopped going and to be honest, sometimes i feel like stopping too. the vicks under their nose or chest area apparently makes them think twice about sniffing something because they dislike the vicks scent each time they put their heads down to sniff, it's exactly what they told us to do too at obedience if we've got a dog that loves to sniff everything when walking. i'm getting rather sick of my obedience classes for the same reason as you mentioned above, along with the fact that classes run for 45 minutes and my dog gets bored as hell then stops focusing while the instructor demands we keep going, arrrgh! anyway, sorry i went off-topic to vent about my experience. back to the original post...

why do so many people take on what they can't handle? i know circumstances may change at any time (you may get ill, people get older and can't look after them, lack of money etc.) but then do the right thing and see what can be done for the proper welfare of your animals by someone else, a shelter or whatever. hearing, reading and seeing these stories both on the news and on those animal rescue shows on tv makes me so god damn furious i cannot handle any type of animal cruelty and in my opinion i think their punishments are way too bloody weak! they should be abused, tortured or neglected like they do to their animals to show them how it feels!

in my opinion, whether a run or a stroll (you did say "fast" walk in your first post) that's still quite a lot for a 12 week old rottie and it's definately unnecessary. when my rottie was 16 weeks or so my vet said that even 5 minutes a day is enough (more for socializing than anything else)! you've mentioned that your pup loves his walks and is fine with it, of course he's fine with it and of course he loves it but he doesn't know and he can't tell you that with each step he takes on solid concrete for that long or that amount of times is probably doing him more harm than good. surely, there'd be other things you could do instead? buy lots of different toys that you fill up with treats, could hang one of those tug-o-war toys over the tree and he'll be occupied for a while trying to pull it down (i'm going to attempt to make my own as they're a bit expensive), play chasies on a grassed area, you can also buy those board games with treats in the compartments and they have to tap sections with their paws or nose to reveal the treats underneath which is very stimulating for their brain, teach some basic commands and do them in short bursts throughout the day and so on... i'm not criticizing you, just giving my opinion and some ideas but as you've said each to their own

Need To Update List Dogs That Kill In Aust
lovemyrottie replied to kylielou's topic in General Dog Discussion
seems like it's mostly "cross" breeds that attack and the whole pitbull restriction thing is just plain f*****g stupid  -
oh my, they're just too beautiful i want all of them!

i'm with you, it actually makes me pretty said to think about how they would've felt in there the poor things Especially when they open the lid and put more live dogs on top of the already dead ones and start the process all over again. Poor little things. Sometimes they put cats in with the dogs too apparently.

'miracle' Dog Survives Gas Chamber
lovemyrottie replied to dogfan's topic in Dog Cruelty and Abuse News
makes me so sad how defenceless animals die everyday because of people that failed to look after them -
pretty sure i'm going to stop going to the dog park cause there's the people there that are way too uptight and get shitty just cause my dog goes up to sniff theirs and their response would be something like "my dog's a show dog and i can't get any marks on him cause he's got a show on tomorrow" then there's the people that picnic on the other side of the oval while their dog just won't leave us alone and then there's the people that bring their dogs there to watch and cheers them on as they fight each other! oh, and there's more. so i see why a lot of people are against dog parks but i thought i'd try it as i don't have many mates with dogs to socialize mine with so i guess i'll leave it for the extra spare time i get before obedience classes. sorry to go off topic! but alanmatic, wish you all the best in fixing the problem

LMR you would probably take it seriously as well if you had just had to spend years working with a dog that had been the subject of out of control dogs making mistakes. I made a mistake and learned from it - we don't go to dog parks any more and haven't since the third time my boy lashed out after being tormented by other dogs. (He has never injured another dog, but does not tolerate physical rudeness and will tell off other dogs. I'm not prepared to put him in a situation where he feels the need to do this and is at risk of the other dog retaliating to his telling them off.) Mistakes happen, that's fine, but its when people don't learn from them that I have an issue and I am going to take shit (at least we agree on that point) like this seriously and speak my mind in the hope that at some point someone actually realises that for some dogs it is not all over when they walk out of the dog park. The OP said their dog 'has a go at everyone' - that implies a pattern of behaviour they have not learned from and are prepared to tolerate or at the very least just hope goes away without really doing much about it. If the behaviour has only happened once then I am happy to stand corrected and hope they take the advice that has been offered. Otherwise I stand by everything I've said. that's totally understandable and fair enough.

people take shit way too serious like it's the end of the world because the dog made a mistake of being "rude" by humping another dog, shit happens and you learn from it to correct it. however, i would pull my dog off if he tried to hump another dog for whatever reason but if somebody kicked my dog over it i'd show them how it feels to have a fist embedded in their face and go ahead sue me over something that you made a huge deal out of because like there isn't bigger things in life than that  yes, i know it can set another dog off and start a fight but what if it was a one off thing then who's to blame? no, i'm not a professional dog anything and i don't know about dogs as most of you more experienced people probably would but all of you had to start somewhere didn't you? and as for my conclusion, life goes on and you learn from your mistakes and experiences to make something better out of it or change it.

jesus, it was a question! i wasn't familiar with it because when i was looking for pups i typed in registered breeders in south australia in google and this was the first website that came up, not gumtree nor tradingpost. maybe i wasn't one of those "most people that look on those sites" and now that you've made it crystal clear for me with many thanks, obviously i won't need to ask again.
