Yep, In fact I remember someone saying that at a seminar I went to years ago. Talking about some breeds in the US and popular sire syndrome - everyone using an imported dog young and the dog and his progeny going on to have hassles as they aged and it being near impossible to find lines clear of that dog 5 years down the track. They went on to say that they think it better to only use them a few times while young and then when they reach double figures if they are healthy and able to do the deed. and the progeny from the litters they sired when they were young are healthy then they are a good contributor to the gene pool so let them be used a few more times. Definately agree and something i think about often.

Yeah i wouldn't think a half hr run is too much for that age :) He probably really enjoys it :)

Angelnkids, i take my 7yr old and 9mnth old for an hr walk in the morning then we go to the dog park for an hr to hr half in the arvo's so my 9mnth old can run off her excess engery. lol Mine are spoilt though! I would think a minimum half hr walk every day is good. I always try to do an hr every morning as mine get restless otherwise. Riddick, depending on how old your shep is this sounds good, the GSD is a working dog and need to get out for a good stretch or else they get a bit stir crazy. I know mine do! lol :)

German Shepherd Locked In Bird Cage & Dumped
german_shep_fan replied to Cheyd's topic in Dog Cruelty and Abuse News
Poor dog. I hate cruelty to any animal, but when it is the breed I love : yes I dont hold out much hope for the poor thing, sounds very mistreated(aside from being dumped in a cage). This dog is 4kgs lighter then my 9mnth old girl and the thought of locking her in a cage whatever happens I hope this poor young dog is soon in a better situation. -
As long as they continue to fail! Bear and Koda just highlights how stupid bsl is!
-
BSL is not and never will be the answer. There are good dogs in every breed and bad dogs in EVERY breed. It is not fair to blindly ban or put restrictions on large breeds of dogs simply due to their size. For instance in one gov report i read online a few years back there were more then 38 000 registered GSDs and what percentage of them attacked? .02%. Is it fair to place restrictions on the other thousands of dog owners of the breed and similar breeds just because a handful of people cannot train, socialise or handle their dogs properly? The world's first face transplant was performed on a lady due to her Labrador attacking her if memory serves correctly. Due to that attack then should there be restictions placed on the other thousands of labs due to the actions of a minority? You can have the most perfect fence in the world to keep the dogs in but if the owners are lazy or just generally don't give a damn they won't care if they leave the front gate open for said dog to wonder out. It comes down to individual responsibility, you can punish those who are already responsible and try to make those who are not comply, but if people are not going to be bothered containing their dog the best fences in the world won't help.

Border Collie Breeders Recommendations?
german_shep_fan replied to bossyboo's topic in General Dog Discussion
Whilst i agree with what you are saying thundercat, it is not just BYB's dogs who end up in the pound. Recently an absolutely beautiful little 4 month old fella has come to our park and he was from the pound. Original buyers decided he was too much work so dumped him there. Pound called registered breeder from which this pup came not more then 2 months previous and guess what? Registered breeder didn't want to know abt it, they had their money. Luckily for this beautiful little boy he is now with a wonderful family who love him dearly. Yes puppy farms and byb are a problem with offloading to whoever, but it annoys me when ppl say that ONLY byb dogs end up there. -
I agree. I think this debate can swing both ways really. Some (not all) crossbreed or mutt owners may look down their nose at pedigree dogs for a reason whilst some pedigree owners will look down their noses at pound, byb and petshop dogs for their stated reasons. Everyone is different and everyone has the right to purchase their dogs where they want. I think there probably always has and always will be stereotypes about these things and nothing much will change that.

Rest In Peace beautiful boy. Thanks for the wonderful contribution you made to the police force and the breed

I already own my dream breed, you can't get any better then Old Style GSD's  If i had more land and time permitted for excising them all i would love to own more of them, perhaps i would venture out to get a Working lines GSD and a Border Collie and working Kelpie also :)

lol TBH it doesn't really matter to me whether ppl sign in as anon or not. Sometimes i sign in as anon, sometimes i don't, depends what sort of mood i am in

What's Your 10 Second Info Grab?
german_shep_fan replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
lol i get the same, Troyboy is 74cms at the withers and my friends 1yr old GSD makes him look short, he is abt 85-90cms i would think. When i tell ppl that Troy is actually taller then the standard people are very suprised. Hahaha is it closely followed by 'my mate has a bigger one'? lol lol no i think ppl would be hard pressed to find one taller then my friend's fellow, he really is a big dog, but many that i see around are about as tall as Troyboy so i guess there are alot of oversized GSDs around. -

RIP little Mitzi. Take care Vince.

Thankyou Pheebs. People think it's weird that whenever I talk about him I cry, guess they don't understand the bond you have with your dog. Some people just don't understand the wonderful bond that you can have with our canine companions. They are the ones missing out. So sorry for your loss.

My parents would look after them for me. I have promised mum that if she doesn't i will haunt her daily  If for some reason my parents couldn't take them i know my sister would take them on for me :)
