Military Working Dog Puppy Program
german_shep_fan replied to gsdog2's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just beautiful! I just LOVE the working GSD -
Within an hour of eating he was showing the first symptoms - restlessness (pacing) Hindsight is a wonderful thing though - initially I thought he was just restless. I had no idea what was happening to him until he became more restless (unable to lay down) and gagging. The trigger for me was feeling his abdomen (it didn't look enlarged) and it was tight - that's when my world caved in and I knew he was in trouble Again im so sorry I am paranoid abt bloat, esp in summer when Troyboy is hot, i try to wait sometimes till 8 30-9pm for his dinner when i am sure he has cooled off enough to eat. Even then i keep checking on him for a few hrs just to check he doesnt seem distressed. He has a HUGE deep chest so i worry all the time. So the tummy feels tight and if you tap on it if feels hollow? Sorry to ask, its just the only things i know to look for are pacing, heavy panting and bloated out tummy

Im so sorry gsdog2 After eating, if a dog is going to bloat how soon after would it start happening? Is there a general time frame? Thanks very much

When i was searching for my new girl all the breeders i spoke to were very friendly Although i did give them more info then n/a and actually told them how many yrs experience ect me and my fam have had in the breed. I must admit if i sent through a detailed form and i got that reply i would be offended, but this person didnt give you much to go on. My new girl is undesexed, i was looking at a breeder interstate but when i found out she desexed them at 8wks i decided to look elsewhere. I guess it is a personal choice, i didnt want my girl to come to me already desexed. I know there are alot of irresponsible so and so's out there, but i think alot of ppl will do the right thing also. I found a breeder that trusted me enough to not mind if i leave her undesexed or even if i want to breed her (as we have with a previous female and stud dog). I feel much more comfortable working with ppl who trust that i will have that dogs best interests at heart its whole life rather then someone who judges me before they even know me.

I know what you mean! I was turned off even just going to watch the GSDs a few yrs ago as i rang up the club and talked to a person who will remain nameless. Said person got legit shitty at me when i asked when the old style sheps would be shown. I got a short and curt "they are not shown in this show, they don't even show them at the nationals" and then she hung up on me! I thought well if thats the attitude you want to take with the younger ppl who are involved in the breed then you can go get stuffed! lol

Sa Boy In Hospital After Dog Attack
german_shep_fan replied to german_shep_fan's topic in In The News
Serious injuries from dog attacks shouldn't need to be reported in the press for parents to practice responsible dog ownership, anyone with half a brain knows they should supervise their kids around dogs, yes accidents happen when parents are there, but ppl need to learn how to read the signs from the dog as well. Unfortunately now, as always it is the dog who has to pay the ultimate price My point was that before the girl was killed in Melbourne they would only report dog attacks every so often but since then the media has seen a good thing and report on every incident there is in one paper or another, even if ppl are not seriously injured. Clearly they don't and there is no such thing as too much education. Complacency is as dangerous as not understanding animal behaviour This was a serious bite, I suggest you spend some time in this section and check out all of the news topics on attackes PRE the Melbourne attack. All the angry faces in the world won't make me change my mind I wasn't pointing the angry face emo at you, just at the situation Obv no amount of media reporting is ever going to be enough to change the situation, there will always be ppl who do the wrong thing in regards to their dogs and thier kids with their dogs. To me the only thing the reporting is doing is making ppl who don't like dogs feel more and more hatred toward them when they read of these attacks, and thats not good for any dog owner. I don't want to argue with you, esp on an internet forum so i guess we will have to just agree to disagree on the topic? lol ;) -

A two-year-old boy remains in hospital with facial injuries after being mauled by a dog over the weekend. The toddler was attacked in Kingston, in South Australia's southeast, on Saturday. SA Ambulance Service said they airlifted the child, who was suffering facial injuries, from hospital in Kingston to Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide on Saturday. He remains in the hospital but his condition cannot be released. The owners of the dog have handed over their pet to the Kingston council. Information on the breed of dog has not been made available. Kingston Mayor Evan Flint says it is expected the dog will be put down. "Once the legal matters have been taken care of, my understanding is that the dog will be destroyed," he told ABC Online. "Once again it just shows how vigilant you have to be when children and animals are in the same area. "This dog has obviously been a very loving dog and then unfortunately it's attacked a young child, so it just shows how vigilant one has to be with animals and children." SA Dog and Cat Management Board executive Ben Luxton said he wanted to stress "the importance of actively supervising or separating small children and dogs". http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8364552/sa-boy-in-hospital-after-dog-attack Im guessing they haven't named the breed yet as it doesn't conform to the media's ideal of a danergous breed Seriously wondering when they are going to stop reporting on every dog attack that happens, makes me worried the media are in on a hidden agenda with the gov I hope its just me being paranoid

"backyard Breeders" Posing As Purebred Breeders
german_shep_fan replied to lushos's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just to let you know ethical breeders do also advertise on the sites you quoted. I know because I am one of them. :D I know of a few who advertise thru the local papers that are also ankc reg -
"backyard Breeders" Posing As Purebred Breeders
german_shep_fan replied to lushos's topic in General Dog Discussion
Cool thanks for your reply I dont know much abt the registration to diff councils ect. But what if your a member of the CCC and you have a permit from you local council, reg with your breed club ect but not reg with the ankc? Are you still considered unethical? Sorry just curious, there seems to be so many different organisations breeders can register with these days. And at the end of the day even though these responsible breeders do all the necessary health checks ect things can sometimes still go wrong with a pup i guess. I am always wary of a breeder who says their pups will never have health problems. I have always been curious to know on average which fair better in the long run, a heinz variety or a purebreed dog? There is nothing wrong with either, i love all dogs but it would be very interesting to see stats on health probs of mutts ect vs purebreeds. Just out of pure curiosity lol -
"backyard Breeders" Posing As Purebred Breeders
german_shep_fan replied to lushos's topic in General Dog Discussion
So what do ppl define as a byb dog? Is it just a dog that comes without reg papers? Or is it more the conditions they are raised in ect? Unless you are going to show the dog i dont think it is a crime to not want their papers. Unless breeding or showing they are really not useful for anything lol But i guess thats just me. My boy had papers that the breeder offered my dad when he got him for me but he didnt bother taking them -
Sounds like farmer dave needs to just stick to farming

Tbh i hadn't even thought abt what Idigadog said. Good point! My suggestions (not that i am biased lol) would be a working line or old style german shepherd :D They are big boned and strong enough to pull a sled. Not sure abt how fast they would be with the sled as idigadog said

Question About De-sexing
german_shep_fan replied to german_shep_fan's topic in General Dog Discussion
My family have had shepherds since i was born and i have grown up with them. I love their termperament and their protectiveness torward their families ect. I do want a shepherd that can work thats why i was looking for the type of shepherd that i am. I am not going into any arguments abt that either. I have my views on certain lines of them like everyone else does and thats all i am going to say. I wanted a shep with what I personally consider the correct structure. I dont think i will bother coming back into this thread, infact i wish i could just delete it! All i asked abt was if ppl could provide evidence good or bad abt early desexing and ppl answered my q. Now i have ppl asking why i want a shepherd in the first place if i dont want to take it to schutzhund ect. I do advanced obedience work ect but the other aspects i am not interested in or cannot afford. Doesnt mean i can't have a shepherd that is also built to work. -
Question About De-sexing
german_shep_fan replied to german_shep_fan's topic in General Dog Discussion
The interesting thing with GSD's, the breeders who actually produce a genuine GSD that can do the work required of them as described in the breed standards are sold on main register, same with the Belgian Malinois. I am at a complete loss to understand what a GSD breeder desexing pups and selling on limited register of unproven lines are trying to protect The breeder is a registered breeder and they do come with papers, but they are not the show line variety. I get that this breeder wants to perserve this bloodline, hell i do too, hence why i wanted one from her, but i am not going to buy one from this breeder now as i just personally don't agree with desexing so young. I do not have bad intentions for any new dog i may get, i adore my dogs and they are a HUGE part of my life. Spoke with the breeder, they won't alter their terms. I am now looking elsewhere. Thank you very much to everyone who responded and gave me advice Very much appreciated If a GSD bloodline isn't either a promising show line or a potential sporting champion, police, military, security, search and rescue, protection dog who's lines are not sold desexed in working roles, what is the line good for that needs protecting? sounds like a breeder getting carried away with themselves to me? Like i said i am not getting one from her anymore so there is really no need to worry anymore. Thank you very much for answering my question. The breeder gave the reason as to why they want them desexed before sale and that is their business. I am looking elsewhere. As far as protecting the bloodline im not sure if that is why the breeder is desexing or not. But i do like this 'type' of shepherd and what to preserve this 'type' before it disappears forever. they can be used as protection, police ect, but sometimes the average joe like myself just like them as a family pet. What is wrong with just wanting that??? -
I have a pal who adopted a pup from the rspca who claimed it was a purebred and it most def is not! Not that it matters, but its still false advertising
