  1. Of course they understand English. . How would they know voice commands like sit, stay, shake, down, roll over, wait, go on (feeding) calling their names.. or even where's the ball? And they search the house for a good 10 minutes trying to sniff it out. Walk. Beach, swim, kisses... I dont use any hand signals... I have one clever pap who does all of these and I get a reaction out of her all the time. The others know bits and peices lol
  2. Gumtree and even ask around at shows... if someone decides to give showing a break they usually have their stuff very cheap... worked for me
  3. Sounds like she perhaps bred a litter from a bitch who only had limited papers and she is proberly in shit now cause what she did is ILLEGAL! She might be trying to make up some fake papers...
  4. I actually had a fellow exhibitor tell me a scary story about his Cavalier who had an operation, he had the dissolvable stitches done and a couple of days later he collapsed... Turns out the stitches DID in fact dissolve and his insides went everywhere, a severe infection and many weeks of life support later. You might need to think about having her re-opened up to check that this is not a similar situation!
  5. I think I roughly spend $70 per month for my 3 small toy dogs, mix of raw chicken necks, carcasses, dry kibble every now and then (3kg bag will last 3 months lol) I buy turkey mince and pet mince also, cans of sardines and ricotta cheese, marrow bones and lamb off cuts. I do make sure I keep it stable and dont change it very often but mostly mince and bones. Another reason I like smaller dogs! Hehe they could deffinantly eat alot more if I let them. :-)
  6. There has been alot of different views on here, so I will put in my 2 cents too. Lol I have 3 dogs, I bought my first girl when I was 15, newspaper add but I rang and put a deposit on her and picked her up at 8 weeks. This was 6 years ago. I bought my ssecond dog about 2 years ago now, now my boy had 'papers' and I bought him from interstate from a breeder.. nice lady who had him but the breeder was dodgy as and later down the track I wasnt really happy with the price etc. But my point was I didn't look around, I didn't know the average price for my breed but I assumed it was normal. I emailed the breeder and got into contact with the lady who had him. My third dog, she is a show dog and trust me I rang and emailed many breeders to inform them what I was after. . I waited awhile but I can say I have a gorgeous girl and a fantastic breeder. Best thing to do is give them a call, you might feel awkward but your both people and there are dodgy breeders and dodgy people out there. Talk it out and discuss how to figure out the best way to deal with it, most breeders will be more than happy to chat. Best of luck and as time goes on you get better :-)
  7. My intention of posting was about importing, I had someone tell me to have another breed ( a more rare breed) this had nothing to do with breeding really but it is a thought. And yes your right, like I said health tests, confirmation, temperment will all have to be considered if I do choose to breed. Won't be for a year or so at least... the dog that is timid is a pet, my bitch that I show is not timid. She has the normal spunky papillon temperment. And with the thought 'overseas dogs would be better than aus dogs here why do you think they would be better?' There is a beautiful beautiful japenese chin dog at the shows I often go to, this dog in question usually wins bis but dont get me wrong, it is a beautiful dog and only have seen a couple of others here. The one from overseas has a lovely coat, a really nice head (from what I have heard other people say) and the owner is a nice guy, I have struck up a convo with him and the dog was quite friendly. Maybe its just a cliche thay 'overseas' dogs are better, but all I know that the dog is goergeous and I would love to have one. Yes overrall thanks eveyone for your time and posts, I have decided to put alot more time in and will be going to speciality shows. My partner and I are planning a working holiday overseas for a year and this is why I was asking about importing... when we do eventually go I will be going to shows there aswel Glad you are planning to put the time in as I think you can benefit a lot and we never do stop learning. To clarify a few things: You were not being told to get a rare breed, someone who has a rare breed was relating their experiences with that (and the fact that because it is rare they need to import more as the genepool is small). Yes, there are some good quality dogs from overseas here (you have met one and are basing your assessment on that?). But not all of them are (and there are quite a few you will never see at shows!!) Import does not automatically equal quality. Each individual dogs will still need to be assessed on its own merits regardless of where it is from (in the show ring, when it is being judged, where the dog is from is of no consequence). A great idea to spend your time overseas getting involved with the dog community over there. Will you be taking your dogs with you? My idea waa people with 'rarer' breeds would need to import and as they would have alot at stake they would need to do their research so they knew exactly what they wanted. And yes of course I would be taking my hairy babies with me :) But another thing if I may ask... if I take them overseas do the same quarentine rules apply bringing dogs into their country, so to speak and when we move back I'm guessing they will need to be in quarentine back in aus?

  9. Hello all, I have read most posts from people and read my links that have been reccomended, I'm sorry if anyone is getting concerned that I'm 'not thinking this through' or just looking for breeding. No that is not what I'm intending to do, I am honestly thinking this through as to how this would benefit me (yes going through the pros and cons) and I think I should wait as I am still new. I have no plans to become a large breeder, (the type who has many dogs and cant spend lots of time with them) if I am to breed a litter I am going to do it properly, make sure I do health tests and my bitch does have a lot of faults, she isnt perfect but in time I'm learning. No I dont plan on breeding for size! That is something I have noticed, and not sure if its dog genetics or how they have been bred but I'm not a fan of the larger ones. but as I have noticed some judges like the bigger dogs and others like the smaller ones.
  10. Fantastic WebsiteS, I am going have a good read of the Seven foundationS Ofa Successful dog breeder. Thank youVery much
  11. There is no reason why you shouldn't import. But it is important to remember that you will need to develop relationships with breeders here too. One thing to note about that article is that not only did he import, but he made relationships with breeders in his own country and learnt from them. If you go to his website you will see him mention the help he got from breeders in Finland as well as with breeders around the world. Building these relationships is something he stresses as being vitally important. Great advice * like this post* this is a huge learning opportunity. Edited to say.. its sad that I havent actually thought about NZ breeders lol. :)
  12. This may have been submissive wetting. It's not uncommon in pups and most grow out of it. It may also break your heart. Not every import experience is a positive one and at least a couple of imports have turned out to be sterile. Also not uncommon for a pup to be promised and the promise retracted when it shows real potential. Proceed with caution and don't make the mistake of thinking that the standard of ethics of overseas breeders varies any less than it does here. Absolutely I don't expect things to go perfect straight at the start, that is why I want more options, opinions and advice. I need help and advice... if it doesn't work out yet I can have this in a future goal.
  13. No I'm not a breeder I'm just showing at the moment, might breed next year or so but not now. And my bitch hasnt had any health tests yet so I dont know if I can breed her yet. Oh really? I will have a look at NZ breeders.. that is a good idea thanks for that.
  14. New breeders journey was what I orginally read and inspired me! I am always going to be second best so the next best thing to do is look else where and NOT cut corners and do it. This lady began at the bottom and worked hars to get where she is, why cant I get a dog overseas?. and like I said in my previous post that I find the papillons here are getting much larger and heavier and not 'dainty' anymore... why cant I import? I can its not like it is impossible. Or I could just buy other dog and breed them from australia stock where alot of them came from the same lines... I'd rather sit down search and find with somerthing I'd be happy with. Yes, they mostly will have been imported at a bit older age. Sometimes a breeder will arrange for a dog to stay overseas until it is titled and will pay for it to go with a handler to do this (not cheap!). Sometimes the dog may be here temporarily in an arrangement with its overseas owners and sometimes the dog has been purchased already titled. Generally you will find that these dogs are owned here by established breeders who have already proven themselves through their breeding program (often for many many years) and are 'known' to breeders overseas. Often these people have also bred dogs that have been exported to other countries too (and often have done their fair share of winning overseas).
  15. Excellent thanks for the website, will have a look... and I am aware there are 79 papillon breeders in aus but alot of them breed and keep their beautiful stock for themselves! Yes fair I know... lol the larger breeders have worked hard for their linesband they wont let anyone just use their dogs or even sell them. I see these people wirt alot of knowlodge and they have their goals. I'm not just going to venture out and get any one I lile the look of, I'm not stupid and I do realise I will need to do lots and lots of research :) Also why cant I import? I know I could do it dispite the stress and I dont want to cut corners, I will be looking out in aus for paps but I'm going for the chance to look overseas. I am aware rhere are pros and cons and a long waiting and trust time but I would like to perhaps become a great pap breeder in the future and show BISS champions, this is going to be my goal where ever it takes me. And my dog was 5 months if I can remember... I have never seen such a timid pap before. If myself or my partner would pat him and if we called him over, (we would be on the floor) he would pee everytime and scared unless he was in some horrible fear stage I think he was caged cause he also used to piss his bed all the time! That is not very normal' with dogs, but anyway this isnt about my poor dom :) lol And also if I add before I got my show bitch it took me 8 months to find her, I emailed and rang dozens of breeders only to find their dogs were (on the larger side and not dainty) no one wanted to give me a bitch with showing and breeding rights (fair I understand) I was asked to be put on a waiting list on a dozen and to be contacted when a show qualiy pap was avaliable, two or three contacted me but I wasnt happy with their size like I said or their colours.. I was after a tri or red and white or sable. Only b/w and alot of the breedees actually scoffed at me enquiring abiut a bitch... put me off alot of the kennels really and lastly a few just breed for money im sure of it because they dont health test, and they constantly have litters... As far as I see it overseas is a chance to do something great and bring something over which could help alot of the limited stock over here, I do say this because alot of paps come from the same sire and are related aswel. Mot closely related but three generarions ago my two paps have come from the same sire. Thanks everyone and I'm still going to put this in my goals even if it might take a few more years :) For a list of Papillon breeders o/s, try: http://www.eurobreeder.com/breeds/epagneul_nain_continental.html Email the kennel just as if you were looking for a dog in Australia. ie choose the sire/dam that you like the look of the most, whose pedigree appeals the most, and which breeder you feel you can communicate best with. I dont think it matters how many Papillon breeders are in Australia, you may like a puppy from another breeder, just further away :) Foremost, be sure to choose a dog based on what you want, not what you think others may want. If you want a male dog that is already titled and established as a stud dog, and you think this dog will match your female, the breeder may be willing to sell the dog to you. But before you ask the owner/breeder, make sure you know what you are looking for and why the dog is the total package for you. AND if you can, visit the breeder. Perhaps choose a breeder or two or three in Europe, and visit this Spring or Autumn. Once you visit, you are then in a better position to know what you want and to also ask for what you want. The breeder will also be more willing to sell to you, as you would have met them in person and verified your intention. Good luck !
  16. Thanks for a great detailed reply, yes I am aware of the pros and cons I also need to do lots of research... I know alot of people dont bother because of all the risks involved but I am dead set keen to import someday. I will be going to some shows when I am over seas to make an apperance and mix with other breeders and exhibiters. I dont want to cut corners doing what I enjoy and im hoping by making an effort someday I will be rewarded and learn more and help others. The last thing I want is to be ripped off, it has happened to me when I bought my other dog. Was hoping to start showing 2-3 years ago and was convinced this dif was good for a new person like me. Nope the breeder sent me a terrified, huge pap that had poor socail skills and had obviously been abused and timid as heck. After alot of work I have a lovely pet who is very affectionate but this had upset me and I had to wait longer before I could move on and show. I will have to have a look and search some posts in here, bit difficult on my phone. Alot of research and I will not be completely relying on photos if I do eventually find a dog. I would like to know.. at some dog shows I find the best in show exhibits are usually titled from their country and also working on their aust title? I take it rhat they are usually abit older?
  17. Hello, as the title says I am after some advice from people who have imported a dog from the USA, canada or anywhere overseas! I read a fantastic post (cant find it now) about a lady who began her dog showing and imported from the usa, she had lhasa apso's... anyway I have my first show bitch and we are doing ok in the ring. I am enjoying every moment of it, I'm new and still learning but I have been thinking about costs, time and if its worth importing a dog...? I am looking at a papillon, small dog to bring over for new breeding lines and good show quality. I am looking at down the track a year or so. Where is the best website to look at kennels? How do I go about emaling the owners, I know there needs to be alot of trust in both sides! I'm not sure if I want an adult male or young puppy. So many questions and I want to know as much as possible, I am willing to travel over and visit (on a holiday :)) would it be somewhat easier if I was overseas and could help organise flights and etc? How much estimated would this cost? On average? Even if this fails there is always the idea of importing semen for perhaps future breeding if my bitch passes her health tests? Would this be an easier option? Ah so many questions... I thank anyone who would be kind enough to PM me or reply on here. And if there is another post thread happy to be directed on there, I did search but couldnt find too much! :-)
  18. Wow wasn't aware how often this does happen! poor Cindy, she goes to the toilet where the grass seeds where! Haha I let her out and she went back over there! Silly dog, yes everyone rip up and get rid of your glass seed plants asap before it can hurt your dogs!
  19. Thankyou, the whole thing come out in one piece luckily, and her eye looks much better already! I'm putting saline in every hour and I don't have any meds but if i need any I will go to the vet. (Y)
  20. As the title says Cindy had a swollen eye yesterday arvo when I got back from work, this morning I flushed it with some salt water and an hour or two and I pulled her eye lid back and pulled out a grass seed! Poor thing with the help of two people, now her eye is still swollen and I put some saline solution in her eye. How long until the swelling should go down? I am hoping she doesn't have any more in her eye! Should I be doing anything else? Advice would be appreciated. Also I have ripped out all the plants I can find so the other dogs don't get any either!
  21. I visited my mum two days and and decided to take my three paps up there for a play over with the groodle and my mums pap. anyway after a nice mum cooked dinner (lol) it was time to leave, with my horror I let my three paps in and omg the smell! Lily and domino had eaten something nasty in my mums back garden!!!!!!! OMG and it was smeared on lilys chest, YUK! I think it was poo. So we had to leave and luckily my other half drove my car up and I had his new xtrial to drive home in, he had to take the smelly dogs home! Hahaha but it did stink out my car though! I havent had a chnace to wash them yet either so they have been sleeping outside, haha will have to wash them tonight after work and make sure it doesnt happen again!
  22. Yes all great advice thankyou. Theboy doesn't get walked on leash as often because he is very naughty and has issues. I male him run around the yard more and I have been taking them for a run next door at the oval with a tennis ball. they are very exhausted afterwards, I get worried that the boy will run off. chicken necks seem to be doing fine, they enjoy them and I'm not going to go and buy beef and things like that for the dogs when I cant even buy myself a nice piece of steak these days. Bit less food and more exercise sounds good,
  23. I would like 2013 to involve: Lily: get her Australian confirmation title.(I think that's it) I'm still new with.my three shows lol. I would love to get Cindy to give obedience a go this year! And I'm not sure what else there is for domino to do but we will find him a goal Haha
  24. Mine get fed at night some kibble and occasionally raw. Every now and then I will give them some bones or something to eat during the day. I am now going to start to feed in the mornings
  25. Ok thanks for everyone's advice. I'm thinking I will begin feeding them in the mornings! As what Neckhbet has mentioned makes a lot of sense, bones are not very often and the marrow bones are usually not very meaty but something that can get them munching to clean their teeth. Ok if I begin morning with a tiny amount of kibble and a chicken neck in the evening? I think that would be sufficient for them. I will try to exercise them all more but I will be working a lot more in the summer months. If I were to take them to the school oval next door and run them after a ball for 30 mins would this be okay? I might be able to do two sessions a day if I'm not too tired. Raw sounds the way to go but everyone has their own opinion on chicken being more fatty! And I think I will give them some sardines aswel, my 4.5 girl could use some omega in her diet, I think one of her knees is beginning to play up :-(
