she has gained again this morning , last night when i put them all on for a feed at around 2300 hrs, all of them were sucking like mad as if they werent getting much from mum (constantly kneading the teats and moving off and on diff ones) and they all stayed on her for ages and all of them seemed cranky and unsettled..this went on for over an hour so i ended up topping her up (the runt) with a little goats milk, she gobbled it up then settled and slept for few hours, then she seemed fine on mum for the next feed and we had a fairly good night... no she definately gets on the teat! she pushes the others off as they push her off also, she is not fatigued at all...she has alot of spark she is my fav i dont want anything to happen to her....i will be gutted if it does.

thanks have added both to my collection.

im nowhere in the experienced range of some of the above breeders posts but i definately wouldnt take my bitch outside of the house at this early puppy age, you have been through alot it would be silly to risk it at the sake of the dog being clipped....undertstandbly if she is uncomfortable I would just attempt to cut the coat myself and not worry about the actual cosmetic side does it matter if she looked a bit hacked for a short time (sorry I know nothing about grooming always had short hair breeds..!!) .....it will grow back and then you can get it done professionally?

thanks bilbo baggins and swayd birth weight their was a 90gram+ difference between her and 3 of the other pups and a 50 g diff between her and her and 1 other girl (who is now my biggest girl, 2nd biggest pup) i definately realise the smaller ones will gain less/not be as big as their siblings, she is petite. I just was more looking for suggestions in case we went backwards rather than forwards. Someone on here has kindly given some great advice via a PM and i think although i was aware of it i wasnt being diligent or strict enough (my fault), and this arvo she is looking fatter already. Birth wt doubled was just under by 10 grams at day 10. the 10% perday and double weight by 10 days is very helpful, as much as i have read or tried to read on every aspect i can i dont recall reading this....however as a weak excuse my fatigue is high so i think when i am reading things the last week I am missing important points *sigh* thanks

glad to hear your girl is fine minigirl,. being the ridiculous worrier that i am myself i dont think you worry to much!

the pups were checked when they were a few hours old as we had our bitch at the vet as she popped out less pups than what was shown on scan so had some oxytocin and some Ab's. the vet definately checked all pups for cleft palates as he mentioned it and i do recall him listening to their chests the only thing he commented on was their cords were cut to short.....except i only cut 1...mum got 2 sac's off and 3 came out without placenta's and the cords were right down to their stomachs, they are all fine though 11 days later, no infections. i guess they were way to young though to detect a heart mumour? she has gained a little more weight this morning will just keep doing what ive been doing overnight with her. becks i gave her a little of the nutrigel off of my finger she likes it! (mum loves it too)

pav lova; their are no clear signs to me the puppy is unwell at this time, she doesnt look thin, well their are no ribs showing or any other boney prominences, but i will get her fully checked when she is older. I did have something like that in the back of my mind also but i was thinking digestive or absorbtion rather than cardiac

i have spoken to my vet every few days, he said last time i spoke to him much less the same, as long as she isnt going backwards....but i havent spoken to him for a few days (have actually felt things going ok apart from this little girl being slower to gain) i guess i needed to read a few experienced breeders reassurance or advice I dont even have a large litter! thats why i was also wondering why she isnt gaining as much as fast.. thanks for replying

no i dont have any molases/paste....bugger! only nutrigel and corn syrup Ive been putting the bigger pups on the nipples first to bring the milk down, and rotating them all, the other pups dont need help at all they feed themselves i would rather intervene early rather than later. being a nurse myself i always think prevention is always better than trying to cure something when its happened. being sleep deprived makes me more anxious

Im after some advice, after making it through the whelping and first 11 days, I have 5 lovely bubba's (this is my first litter). One of them is clearly the runt. She weighs and is much smaller than the other 4 that are fat and gaining weight much quicker than she is,the last few days the other 4 have been gaining even more weight and they look so much bigger than her its more of a concern now than 4 or 5 days ago. I guess i just wanted to know should I supplement her? she is gaining weight but slowly, however tonight she hasnt put on anything from this morning I have divetalac. my breeder said not to worry that at least she is gaining weight she is outgoing sparky little girl with loads of personality, but i question how much milk she is actually getting from the boob, she seems to struggle to stay on even when i feed her separtely from the other 4 and i think she gives up as it tires her. she shows no signs of dehydration.

with the sling on the back of the chair, how long do you leave the pup in for? or how often, or do u completely leave them in it between feeds.

Qld Veterinary Specialists in brisbane (north side) its more expensive as they are a specialist service but i used my regular vet on my first dog (as i did not know any better as a newbie) and the xray was not good (bad position) so i would never use a regular vet unless they were reccomended or the like....just my opinion.

very useful information, im looking forward to making some kind of mini- agility pen ! thanks for sharing.. im trying to work out how this is done... ""A breeder I know daily turns each puppy over several times in her hands (head over heels). One noted animal behaviorist finds that this makes animals brighter and quicker learners""

sandra777, i live near the gold coast, its not that hot (well not to me) and the room i am in is very open and cool, last night i had the doona out on me in here as i felt cold and the pups were on top of or near the hot water bottle even with mum in and out of the box.

thats interesting about the calcium and digging... she is being fussy with food, but she is eating so im not worried about not getting enough calcium, she is eating her dry (rc buscuits) as well as minced frames and roo mince, cheese and yoghurt and a little goats milk. she just wont eat out of the bowl...so hand feeding her or i have to tip it on the floor! definately weight gaining. they look like little mini wombats !

Yes she is being maticulous with cleaning!!! thats why im unsure how often do they poop lol and I panic a little overnight when she seemed to loose interest for about 12 hours (if it was like 2 hours i definately wouldnt be posting this on here) i rang the after hours vet and they said not to panic unless she wasnt even wanting to feed them or they appeared sick (puppies are doing great) checked mums temp - normal and she is taking in food and water. and she never not allowed them to feed. She did have a shot of Ab's day of whelp as she had alot retained, so that is at the back of my mind regarding infection but her discharge is getting less and better and again ive been talking to my vet regulary and he has reassured me that what she still has is normal. she seems fine this morning and back to cleaning them normally thankgod. she cleans the flooring in the whelping box too so again hard to see any mess plus its a purple green backed vet bed so even more difficult.. in the whelping box i have 2 hot water bottles in each corner, i find the pups are either not near them or they are laying next to them, or close to mum, or they all venture to beneath the crush rails the green back vet bedding is great. I did have a heat pad to use but it makes the box way to hot. ive been making sure she goes out regularly in the day for about 20 mins at a time in our yard to get some exercise. however she is digging her way to china when in the yard....(she is not normally a digger)...but i figure its just the hormones.

Well i have 6 day old pups (1st litter) up until yesterday mum very good, attentive with cleaning and feeding etc but in the last 12 hours has really lost interest She allows them to feed but has not been cleaning the pups so i have not noticed any poo's, i have done the gentle stimulation and they are all urintaing but no poo's.... I was wondering is this normal? i.e should they poo frequently? or is 12 hours or more fine? i guess with mum being so good until yesterday i havent noticed the pups doing a poo in the last few feeds... i havent noticed any poo on the bedding either but it is purple.... my girl also wants to be out of the box now too *sigh*....leading up until 12 hours ago she wouldnt get out..

my bitch has a good milk supply we are on day 6 now so i didnt need it, im honestly not sure what the dosage is as the package i have has no instructions it is a powder. i did follow the link to the thread about it on here but still couldnt find anything about an approx dose

I was just wondering how much and how often fenugreek is given to help milk production. would it be something you could give from the first day of whelp? and if so do u mix it in with the bitches food?

Skin Problem Diagnosed As Ringworm/ Fungal
bjazld replied to erinonthefarm's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had a young dog once with dry flaking patchy area's on his back and down his rear, not bad, wasnt causing an itch and it wasnt inflammed or weeping but definately he lost hair in the affected area's. he had a skin scraping and a ringworm test which came back negative...the vet said it was probably mites but I was washing him in malesab shampoo as directed by the vet before the skin scraping so perhaps thats why it was negative. I used 'advocate' topical treatment and within 2-3 months it disapeared and never returned and hair grew back...he was a puppy at the time so possible his immune system wasnt fully developed. I know advocate treats mites and mange. I dont use advocate on my dogs normally but if i thought any of them looked to have a similar skin problem it would be the first thing i would try. i do also recall the vet saying if it didnt clear up with the advocate/malesab he would need blood tests etc, and i was also offered to try the ringworm medication but I declined as i also read up on the side effects. -
thanks mystiqview, i have sent you a PM.

with my dogs, if i notice one is looking a bit heavier than i like i only feed raw lean meat (roo or turkey) bone (frames /brisket) with veges (i cut out all buscuits) and reduce daily food by 20% for a few weeks. if i increase the exercise they tend to be hungrier! i do try and do more high intensity exercise tho like taking them out on the bike (well i ride, they run) or try and swim them regularly. general walking does bugger all for my dogs unless you go for an hour +, they get a much better work out running alongside the bike for 20 mins. we play ball/frisbee also. we have 3 so they run about in the garden together and play. mine are always hungry tho.. i often give them bits of fruit or cook up pumpkin to make them feel fuller
