That isnt my Staffy . . .Its my mothers old boy who came from a Sydney dog shelter. She is happy and contented and had a really nice trip to the lake.It did wear her out so much that she was snoring on her back like a Mack Truck when we got home. Ive now got her on two meals a day and she seems to have more energy and is not as ravenous. She sees the vet again this coming Saturday. And she wasnt chewing a stick at all . . ..she was flossing her teeth with it lol!!! -

Hi! I am currently renting a property and I have been a long term tenant as such for 6yrs.In that time,I have never been late with a rent payment, never caused any disturbance to neighbours and have maintained it in a condition as if it were my own. I have a Pharaoh Hound called Kenya who is 2yrs old and two indoor Devon Rex cats called Monte Carlo and Wellington Boot. All animals are desexed, vaccinated.Council Registered,Microchipped and are kept free of parasites using Revolution. I also take on the occasional foster dog from time to time.I dont have human children just the furry kind. The time has come to move to a bigger home but finding a pet friendly rental is very difficult.I just want a smallish home with a safe fenced yard for dogs . . .it doesnt have to be modern.Older style is just fine. Anyone out there looking for a good tenant?

British Bulldog - Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Thanks. Her eyes know way too much! They are so expressive.I had to get some fly repellant for her today - Her ears got bitten again and she was bleeding. They suggested Repel X.They also suggested FiltaBac to cover her sore dry skin area as it will be both a barrier cream and sun repellant. The flies just swarm over her as if they know she is sickly yet they leave my own dog completely alone. -

You will get there. I hope all the diet advice hasn't been too confusing. There are a few choices been suggested, but you wouldn't feed all the suggestions, just pick the ones you want. 1. If you are feeding sweet potato and pumpkin, you would just add meat to that, you wouldn't add any dry food. You would add oily fish or fish oil, and an egg, and the meat would be normal fatty meat , and not lean meat. 2. If you want to use dry food, use a super-premium dry food, and use that alone. A couple of brands have been suggested. If the dog was healthier you could buy a good dry food, but your dog isn't healthy yet, so you need excellent dry food. Supercoat is not a bad brand, but it isn't even close to the better ones available as far as nutrition goes. Two points to keep in mind with your dog's diet. 1. Gluten is the ingredient in grains and cereals (and abundant in cheap dry food) that may cause a problem in an allergy prone dog. That is why people are suggesting the sweet potato and pumpkin, and telling you no rice or wheat ingredients. Oats is another one I can suggest as a low-gluten option, to add to a meat meal. Nature's Gift make a very bland chicken, vege and oats variety that might be a good solution for you (if convenience is important). You would just feed that, nothing else, and none of their other varieties. That one is a good variety for the itchy dogs. It is a supermarket canned food, but is a lot different from the cheap canned foods (which you should never feed that dog) 2. Oil is really important for the recovery of your dog's skin. Meat oil (lard) and fish oil is best for dogs (unlike people). The super-premium dry foods may have enough good oil in them. If you feed meat and veges, don't trim the fat from the meat. Meat with 10 or 20% fat is going to be fine. Too much fat is bad of course, but it is that fish and meat oil that will repair the dog's skin and hair. Dogs don't need a lot of variety, and your dog needs a special diet for the coat to recover, and to lessen the chance of any further reactions. But there have been success stories with dogs like yours, so let's all hope for the best. Thanks for bullet pointing that in such a clear way.I hope to have some good success with her and ill update pics in this thread as we go so her progress can be shown. -

Pearl weighs 20 kg!! How much should a Bulldog weigh? I have been so worried she would put on too much weight and it would adversely affect her breathing. -

I put some Advocate on Pearl today which I got from the vet.She was due for treatment.I bought her some Ilium ear drops for her possible ear mites and was shown how to dilute the Malaseb to clean her ears. I have bought a pile of pumpkin and sweet potatoe and will now split the meals into two feeds a day and increase the amount. I bought Sudocream! On the weekend,Ill get a better brand of dry dog food from a large pet supply store. But today she has had sardines and egg! We will get there. -

The first photos are NOW and the second lot are THEN. She has been wormed twice with a vet allwormer and she was skin scraped for mites which was negative. No heartworm check as of yet.He has purely dealt with the skin. Her ear is a cauliflower ear from haematomas and is very badly scarred. Her ears are very dirty and stink badly.I have been using Epiotic on them as a cleanser. Which soothing cream? Thanks for taking time to help. I thought she had a haematoma, just needed to ask. With her ears being very very dirty, was the vet able to view them to make sure she didnt have a perforated eardrum before you applied the ear cleanser. Its obvious she has mites in her ears if they are very dirty and stinky. You wont get rid of them just with the cleanser. You need ear mite ointment. These can be purchased from a large pet store. Did your vet prescribe any for her? I would also recommend Sudocream. Purchased from Woolworths in the baby section. It is zinc oxide. From the photos she is certainly looking better which is great. You did very well to keep your cool. And she is now in such a better place. One can only imagine how much worse she would of got. This has been going on by the looks of it for a long time. To not of sort some veterinary advice on their behalf is just heartbreaking. How is her tail? is it a tight screw tail which also needs attention or is it nice and clean? We have owned Bulldogs for over 30 years. Have pretty much seen it all except I have never seen a bad case as poor Pearl. Advice comes with hugs to Pearl The sudocream is for her skin. I dont think he really has looked into her ears.So Ill put ear mite meds on the shopping list. And Sudocream! He didnt check with the microscope for a perforated ear drum but ive been putting Epiotic in there for a while now so I hope its ok. I am not sure what a screw tail is? She just has a bony lump of a tail which appears to be all ok but its hairless and leathery. Its dry and clean though. -

He didnt give me any cream I wanted to get her microchipped straightaway but he wouldnt do so as her skin was too bad for poking needles into so I have had to wait a bit longer. -

second that! sometimes dry food can also do more harm than good depending on whats in it. Im beginning to see that Daveri. The vet tried to help by keeping to a budget but he suggested Surepet from Kmart.I was very dubious so I bought 2 x 8kg bags but its not really filling her up. So we have moved to Supercoat but maybe now Proplan?? -

It's a tricky one, but I feel that diet helps. A FAD dog is often predisposed to skin sensitivity full stop so I would probably treat her as a 'sensitive skin' case. I have found the Salmon and Anchovy kibble to work really well. It is not cheap, it is made by Holistic Select (Eagle Pack) and available at most pet stores. Malaseb washes two or three times week and Aloveen Leave In Conditioner rubbed in afterwards to soothe the skin. I would be happy to do this for you for as long and as much as you like (groomer) but I know it might be a bit far from you (I am ten mins from the top of Macquarie Pass). I can't promise you would go home with her though  Or as BBLover suggested above ProPlan also do a salmon based kibble. I would leave out rice/pasta etc and I think someone else said to add pumpkin, sweet potato etc. Lovely that you are so close by!! Im sure she would eat pumpkin and sweet potato without hesitation.I have been washing her twice a week with Malaseb but dont have any Aloveen conditioner but ill have to have a look as Im sure she would love that too.Her skin is quite dry and rubbery. -

Pearl came from a Housing Commission area.I went to the house to buy some fencing material and I saw Pearl who was living under the house in the dirt. She brought tears to my eyes but I stayed calm. They told me they didnt know what was wrong with her . . .after some weeks of my staying in touch with them, they agreed to surrender her.Obviously she has to be desexed and have all of her vet work done but first we are working on her skin. It is leathery like an Elephant.I have her in a concrete patio area so there is shade and no grass. She has a pool and a ball which she is very fond of. First I started her on Kmarts inhouse brand of dryfood called Surepet. The vet said it was pretty good for the price but I was a bit dubious so we elevated then to Supercoat.I can look at Proplan.I have just gotton tired of buying roo, beef and different types of biscuits for the vet to then say that diet doesnt matter much at all and then I have changed diets again lol. I will change to two meals a day.She is very hungry! I am trying to do my best by her and am grateful for all advice. Her skin seems to dry up and heal and then the sores reopen and ooze again.Pearl is a lovely girl. -

He said to give her rice and pasta to fill her up and provide variety . . .As he assured me that Prednisone increases appetite, she is always ravenous. She has one meal a day. I didnt know what "heating up the blood" actually meant??? As he is the sole vet at the practice,I would have to change practices and this one is very convenient to me. He acknowledged diet does play a part but as she is allergic to fleas not food, then fleas and their prevention were the focus. -

The vet did say roo at first . . ..so I bought 10kg of it but then he said it 'heated up the blood' so to change to beef . . . I use Supercoat Dry. I am putting rice or pasta with each meal. She is due for flea treatment this week so I will change to Advocate. Clyde - She would looooove a holiday!! -

It is a looong story but four weeks ago, this girl was surrendered to me by a local community member who could not adequately look after her.I have called her Pearl and she is approximately 3 - 5yrs old.I am fostering her until she can find herself a new home. She has flea allergy dermatitis which has slowly improved. She has had a two week course of antibiotics and is now on a reduced dosage of Prednisone. She is being washed twice a week in Malaseb and is on Comfortis for fleas. I am wondering to what extent diet plays a part in this and what I should be feeding her on? Currently she is on a plain diet of beef mince and dry biscuits. The vet made no diet suggestions and didnt think diet wold matter much when it comes to her dermatitis. Thanks in advance!!
