Well Sasha just had her first negative experience of chewing on the wire of her crate - she got stuck. A morning crate training session sounds like a good idea - she's always the most active in the morning. Then she mostly sleeps all afternoon, gets chewy in the evening (about now), and sleeps all night. Last night she didn't even cry for the toilet. She only had this crate for last night and today because her first night we had a soft crate that was a wee bit small and she scratched at it.

Thanks for the answers guys :D She's starting puppy school in October - only school in the area works on terms. Persephone: I'm also keeping her in her crate while the cats are around to help her with associating the cats with something she can't chase. Since she was sitting today, I also tried having her sitting and treating for calm. This is what Victoria Stillwell does. Suzi: Half the things you've listed are things we're also working on but I just didn't think to mention. She's going in her crate with a treat lure and she's actually got the toilet cue - every time I say it, she starts sniffing and squats once she finds her place. I'm not exactly sure how to get her to sit reliably while I'm getting her out of the crate. I don't want to expect too much (especially since I've only had her for a couple of days) but if it's not too early for teaching some self control then I might try for a second of control until I think she's ready.

I have a 9 1/2 week old German Shepherd and I'm wondering if anyone has a sample schedule of how far in training I'd be able to get with her based on a week by week basis? She started "sit" today and is now doing it 80% of the time. There are manners I want to teach her (waiting for her bowl to be on the ground, waiting for me before she walks through a door, lying down when she's around the cat so that she doesn't chase) but they require "down" and "stay". Is she too young to be learning that kind of self-control?

OMG it's tomorrow I couldn't sleep last night and I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight - still have to buy her a bowl and waiting on her puppy pack to arrive. OMG OMG OMG Tomorrow! (Can you tell I'm a wee bit excited?)

Cheers everyone for the replies and RallyValley, I was thinking of them (my physio took her rescue pup there) but wanted to know if anyone knew of anywhere else - I don't think benotto do pre-school, only classes once they're vaccinated - will have a look. I'm happy I can introduce her on play dates because my godparents have dogs and due to my godparents splitting, I haven't seen the two for a while and wanted to invite them over and now I'll have the pup here Plus there's an absolutely gorgeous and friendly Golden Retriever down the road from us who I'd like to introduce her to so she has someone role modeling good behaviour for her. :D

Hi everybody, Have chosen my pup and she will be coming home in ten short days! Does anyone know which puppy pre-school (most of ours are run by vets) in Bunbury are good/safe? Also, if I know a dog has been kept up to date in its vaccinations, is it safe for my puppy to meet them before her 16 week vaccinations? Now, for the requisite photos:

Hi everybody, I'm getting a German Shepherd pup in two weeks, so this question won't be relevant for a little while, but would it be possible to train a dog to play bow on cue, perhaps as a hello? I'm thinking clicker training might work but I don't want her to lose the fun of doing it naturally as well. Any suggestions/comments?

I'm getting a German Shepherd puppy so I need toys that are tough, at least I think. Definitely getting a Kong and maybe something else from that brand (Kong Wubba maybe). Might get a Snugga Wubba to double as a soft toy. Do your dogs like tug toys?

Wilbur's so cute! Okay, now I have to start thinking supplies. A cat crate arrived yesterday which I actually think will be big enough for a puppy for the first month (maybe) so I'm set on a crate for now. But if you only had $100 to spend on your puppy (food already covered in a different budget) - what are the toys that would make it onto your must have list?

Contacted by a breeder today - who I emailed a couple of days ago and she has a little girl ready to go! :D She's selling for quite cheap compared to some and willing to let her come from NSW. If she's happy with me, I'll have a puppy in two weeks! I'm glad I turned down the other pup now - this will probably be a lot better for me. Though now I have to figure out some girl names to call her.

Thanks Esky and Buddy1, I think I am going to look elsewhere - I think the breeder is a lovely person but I don't really want to share my first dog; nor do I want to deal with any dramas that may or may not arise. As it is, if I wait a little longer, I'll be able to properly spoil my pup rather than focusing on his needs like being able to afford vaccinations. If I wait, I can do both ;) However, I will keep hanging around this thread - there may be a litter with my name on it being born at the end of September :D EDITED: for sentence structure - haven't had my morning coffee yet

Why does she want you to keep him entire? That seems really irresponsible of the breeder if your only planning on keeping him for a pet. Coupled with the fact he is your first dog I find that really quite odd. Hope you find a suitable puppy soon :D She wants to use him for stud when he's older - someone's offered her $2000 and she's asking half that for me. She said she'd pay for his Breed Surveying and x-rays but I really don't know about having an entire male

Hi everybody, I've read all the way through this thread - 3 days worth of reading. Your puppies are all so cute I am looking for a GSD puppy right now. I've been in contact with a breeder and she could give me the runt of her current litter for cheap but she wants me to keep him entire and I'm not sure I could handle an entire dog as it'll be my first and there are a lot of irresponsible dog owners around here; if he got out - which he could if he really tried - then it could be a disaster. Otherwise I'll be waiting for a few months until a puppy over East is ready to fly over. When they finish uploading I'll upload some pics of the puppies I went to see last month - didn't work out but they're still gorgeous!
