Take a look at the Brittany a Border Terrier and the Vizsla.I had a Bull Terrier when i was young;she was great with everyone and loved kids.

Thanks Purdie - that's my rescue. I would definitely NOT recommend an Iggy for an older person - they are very likely to trip you up as they stick like glue, leap into the unknown at the drop of a hat, have no common sense and are esp. interested if food is anywhere. They are hard to housetrain and even if they are, have accidents under certain circumstances. Even the mature ones can still be crazy! Ok thanks;I've learned something about Iggys.....:)...Genie the foxie x sounds like a sweet little dog.

By athletic do you mean a slender build ? A smooth Fox Terrier or a Parsons Russell Terrier.?
-
A Staffordshire Terrier or Hungarian Vizsla...... efs.

What about a Bedlington Terrier..? Not sure if they would be ok around chooks but it can get down to the individual dogs temperament and training. I don't know what shedding is like with the Wire haired Fox Terrier but their size may suit you...

How's This For A Recipe For Disaster...
Purdie replied to Simply Grand's topic in General Dog Discussion
Shame she's not a book worm.Keep an eye out in the op shops for dog training books anyway; you can pick them up for a couple of dollars and even if she used them as a reference as well as with info from you...I hope all goes well for her and her dogs. -

It's good that she has asked for advise.Would she borrow books on puppies and dog training from the library.? -
My in laws who where not very active due to health problems, had Australian terriers. They had very good recall and were happy getting most of their exercise running in the yard while there owners where sitting outside. They would sit quietly inside happy to be with their people. Another breed to look at is the Glen of Imaal.Or perhaps a Dandie Dinmont Terrier;but they need a bit more grooming. And you can't go wrong with a Cavalier spaniel.I had 2 ; they are quiet gorgeous little dogs.

That's normal puppy play behavior .Leave the toy with him and let him have fun with it.He would do this with his litter mates except the stuffed toy can't do it back to him like other puppies would.,which is part of learning through play.

You must consider if the activity is also enjoyable for the dog not just the owner. Most dogs will try to please their owner but that doesn't mean the dog it pleased with what it is being asked to do.The Deerhound looked to me like he would rather have been elsewhere.Get a wolfhound to chill out with you and then another breed that will enjoy the agility much more.
-
My Wolfhound x would come when called only if there were no other distractions- like a cat or another dog. I would not have a Wolfhound off lead in an unfenced area as they can take off and cover a good distance very quickly. Get a Wolfhound as the family pet;they are great with children.;then look around for a breed for you that is more suited to agility and obedience. eta ...Take a look at the Hungarian Vizsla..

With very young children a larger breed is a good option.A toddler/young child can fall on a small pup or dog and easily hurt or injure them. Have you considered an older pup or adult dog that has had some training and has already been around young kids.? My autistic son was 3 when we adopted a 10 month old Wolfhound x who was great with kids, very gentle. My son fell on her a few times and it didn't bother her one bit. efs I did a dog breed selection quiz with, good with young kids, large yard acreage ,good with other pets/animals and it came up with. English Pointers,G S Pointer, Labrador, Curly coated retriever,
