  1. Once ready to move to your feet could you use a board there first (with non slip mating attached) then go smaller until your feet are last? It might make it easier for you to distribute the dogs weight when he first jumps up? Also when ready to move to your feet (or board) could someone actually lift the dog into position first so he can see that's the position you want? (Sorry if they're silly ideas).
  2. Etsy has so many collars you'll be lost for hours! That's how I ended up with a ridiculous number of collars... sigh. They also have loads of funky interesting dog tags which could be another option for you?
  3. I think I would be forever burying my face in that soft thick coat. Does he shed much?
  4. You're doing such a great job with her, she looks amazing! She is a gorgeous looking pup too, makes me want a Mal but like someone else said I think way too much dog for me! The more I watch you guys training in drive the more it makes me want to try it. Do you feel the online course is ok for someone who is only learning too?
  5. Ouch! He must have hit you like a freight train! Would he survive without off lead park time? At least then he's not in a situation where he's so terribly excited he forgets himself which would be safest for you both? Or maybe off lead time only if one of the kids can come with you so you can stay seated and they can do the running around if they need to? Its hard when you see them burning off steam or having fun but if it means you might avoid walking him I'm sure he'd prefer tamer onlead time only? Good luck with the injury and whatever way you go training wise!
  6. Hello Ernie, aren't you gorgeous! I think it would be the look he's giving wearing the birthday hat which would make me give in to anything. :)
  7. That's awesome, looks in great condition! I wonder how often you'll be looking in the rear view mirror on the way home? Lol
  8. My first thought is your dog...your rules! Will you be able to lock her in her room though? Id be worried if there's drinking at the event people may end up poking around and be like oh poor doggy, lets go pat her... Id be tempted to put a sign on the door 'dog recovering from parvo virus, please don't enter' Good luck for you and your partner, hopefully you can both relax and enjoy it :)
  9. Hmmm, I'm thinking you should go the princess and the pea route and buy another mattress to lift you out of cold wet nose range? LOL
  10. Would you be willing to move his crate to the lounge and still leave the door open? You may need to close your bedroom door or chock it partially open to he can't push through though. He can then still wander and 'guard' but not bother you through the night?
  11. I'm a bit paranoid about feeding sausage after a Vet told me they're a leading cause of pancreatitis. I think because most sausages are high in fat? I'd been feeding them as treats too and mentioned it. I have a feeling the biggest problem might be dogs suddenly getting lots of sausage at BBQs etc but it did freak me out a little.
  12. I always thought 10%ish was the aim for calcium in a raw diet? If not what should the percentage actually be? The egg shells would provide minimum calcium along with spirulina which is high in calcium too. Can you use poo colour/consistency as an idea how your going calcium wise or is that too risky?
  13. Thanks Nekhbet I can see how that would happen. I was trying to avoid a collar pop and growl everytime she forged ahead but I can see there are then two separate events happening. Sorry for my ignorance but is a non reward marker a verbal word like uh oh or try again etc? Does it differ to the UGH! I was using previously with the collar pop? Do I still come to a stop after saying the nrm so she can reposition or is she meant to do this as I'm heeling? Sorry for 20 questions but this is all quite new to me. Thank you for your help :)
  14. I found this chart a while back which might help? I'm pretty sure it's good but hopefully someone will say if it isn't. :)
  15. I thought I'd update this thread as to where we're at now (as a record for me too). I ended up getting some one on one lessons with a lady who helped me get past my problems. Im sure there's different training methods but for the moment this one is working for the both of us and Im really enjoying being given direction and things to try. Firstly I had to take back some free reign Poppy was allowed. The theory was she was getting attention at all times which meant she had less work ethic at the time it was required. She now doesn't sleep in my room or have access to the bedrooms\bathroom side of the house anymore. She is very good at not crossing the line but waits on a mat until I come out of those rooms. She has time outside the house when I'm home, and time out here alone when my other dog Maggie is inside. She performs little commands before treats and cuddling etc. I've seen a big difference in her attitude to me and training in general. When walking I had to use a firm collar pop if she surged ahead and passed the 'plane' of my legs. At that point I would do an immediate stop and an UGH as well. Lots of praise when she moved back in to position. I had to stop with the constant small nagging collar pops which she was learning to ignore. If she's been good and giving me good eye contact when sitting at heel she'll get a 'go sniff' moment but only sniffing in the area the lead can give her - no more letting her wander in an extended go sniff. She's off like a shot with nose down when I say go sniff! I also went to lots of places and did work near distracting events, Masters and outside dog parks etc. A good distance away first and then moving closer. She's still very interested of course and when closer its a bit more of a struggle to keep her attention but its all a work in progress. On the weekend we walked past a dogpark fence and a lab on the inside rushed the fence growling. I just thanked my lucky stars we don't go in to them. I then watched him trying to dominate another dog which entered later on. No idea why the owner though it was ok to have him in a shared dog area So fast forward eight weeks I think since my initial questions and our walks are now fantastic. Loose leash on heel and she generally self corrects when I change speed. If she starts moving ahead I can stop and say 'back' and she'll walk backward to get back to the 'plane'. If I walk a little sideways she'll stay at heel and move with me. Im lucky to have two courts backing each other so we practice off lead heeling which is going well. She'll sit stay and has a great recall at distance. I'd love to find an empty dog park to practice off lead recalls in a new area in but they're very hard to come by!
  16. Nice, there's some clever dogs and people in this thread! I'm only new to trick training and Poppy is a 9 month old terrier. I really struggle getting distance to my tricks and getting action based on the trick name only. Id love some advice. For example, she does a great beg and at the moment can hold position for say four seconds but my hand is hovering above her head. I've started lifting it higher and she'll stay in position but when I pull it forward she drops back to a sit. How do I get my hand out of the picture? Another like this is crawl. In the down position if I wiggle my fingers on the floor in front of her face and move them away from her she'll army crawl forward. If I start leaving a gap and wiggling my fingers she stands and moves forward to my hand. Last night we went from Hi 5 left and right paws to Hi 10 with both paws which is cute. We've started work on shaping all four in progressively smaller boxes so there's lots of walking in and out and paws every which way in the smallest box while she works out how to manage it. I just love that moment when they get what you're after and start offering the behaviour with such enthusiasm. First thing in the morning especially Poppy is like bam bam, look at me go!
  17. I can understand how some are upset, its a pretty generalised list. I'm still kind of thrilled border terriers are actually on the there and getting a good rap. Normally they're nowhere to be seen!
  18. Makes me feel sick for those poor poor animals Assuming most of these puppies are sold through petshops, I just don't know why we can't ban sales in this manner like in the UK. Such a shame shelters or rescue couldn't advertise the poor souls they have looking for a home instead or even registered breeders with available puppies (but not kept in store). Although impulse buying a cute puppy is Im sure better for business. I also wish there was some way of knowing which pet shops or places were buying from puppy farms so the public could be informed. If the source of money for these low lives could be stopped it would be less incentive for them to keep breeding. In saying that Im sure if they want to make money they'll find a way to keep selling
  19. Hoover is indeed a very lucky dog. Great photos with that last one being a cracker! Welcome back to fun Hoover :)
  20. He looks AMAZING for 84!! I wish my skin was that good. Happy birthday to your dad :)
  21. What about those tarp thingies made for protecting the back of the car? He can muddify and stink up that and you can just remove it after he's out of the car? At least hair and smell won't be ingrained in the fabric then?
  22. Once pup is sleeping through the night and not needing to toilet you can move them to where you want them to sleep. Having them in your room can be just a means to an end not a permanent solution. You can start moving the crate a bit further away until they're where you want them to be or straight outside to an area he'll now be familiar with after sleeping there through the day. I'm sure he was fine at the breeders because he was in a familiar location with mum and litter mates for warmth and comfort. Everything is new and strange where he is now and a tiny baby can't just know how you expect him to be. You'll need to train him to meet your expectations. :)
  23. I also suggest putting the puppies crate in your room. After the same suggestions I had mine beside the bed. If pup was restless when first going in I put my hand where she could sniff it and she soon settled. This only lasted until she slept through the night (not long) and she never once cried through the night. Makes it sooo much easier to hear them wake through the night when they want to toilet too. Good luck! I wanted to add when toileting through the night it was pretty straight forward. Out to toilet spot, say toileting word as puppy goes, praise immediately then back in the crate for bed. No playing. Although there were definite cuddles and puppy fur sniffing on the way out and back lol. A night light and torch can be pretty handy to get around in the dark too. I ended up needing one as I couldn't tell if puppy had gone to the toilet at times! Don't forget to give them a moment after a wee as sometimes they need to poo too.
